U-89...the play calling did not "suck"...Actually, Union could have put 38 up instead of 28 up if they threw more...Hobart ran a 4-4 with just about everyone on the line of scrimmange (8 in the box)....A five yard pass was a guaranteed long gain....They should have actually thrown more....

Bobby would like to say nice Job Union.  Bobby was able to listen to only the 4th Quarter, and it sounds like turnabout may have been fair play today with the fumble/pick/no call Union ball play with 3+ minutes left.  Redemption for Rossi's frozen cat turd????

Bobby would like to know if anyone was at the game and saw the play???

Either way, Union won and has a big game next week against RPI for the LL Championship?  One more step next week and Union will be heading to the promised land.

Bobby, actually, there was little controversey except for the refs staring at each other...Union defensive player lambasted the receiver and at point of contact another player took the ball away while receiver was still on his feet...It should have been ruled an interception, but there really wasn't much controversey.  Although Hobart made the game close, they were relatively unimpressive, certainly did NOT dominate any line of scrimmage, and their defensive plan was questionable to an objective fan....they made zero adjustments on defense evidently believing if they stopped the run, Marotti would not hurt them, but he did....

yeah SJF used WR screen and flare passes to gain huge yardage vs Bart in '03, their aggressive and blitzing style can bite them in the rear alot!

zachattack22

You know what was weird....they put 8 in the box, yet didn't really blitz much...The few times they did, they got beat... Physically, (and the game IS still about being physical) Union did all the hard hitting...

Zach was getting frustrated because the tight ends needed to be used more...A double tightend set really can hurt a 4-4 defense.

Hobart could not run the ball at all, and their main offense was their QB who is really a tough kid....at least he showed that he can read defenses and never quits...But the offensive line that I expected to see for Hobart really wasn't physical enough today. And Arcidiacano still had some real positive yards, but this was not the time to keep pounding him, believe me...Zach loves the running game, but sometimes you have to take what a defense is willing to give you...and Union did.... Credit to Hobart...the way they crawled back into the game was to go to a very short passing game, first down to first down, getting into 2nd and 2, etc....this really helped them climb back in...but defensively....no way were they going to contain union with the 4-4...

Zack ~

Union89's bad if that is the case.  Listening to the game, it seemed like Arcid was gaining yardage in huge chunks on the ground when they tried him.  The announcers never mentioned once that Hobart was crowding the line of scrimmage.  With under 4 minutes to go, Union continued to throw on 1st....Union89 thinks you still after question that.

zachattack22

U-89...trust me...Zach would pound the ball on every play....Arcid had quite a few runs that were minus 2....If you were there...you would have thrown the ball...Zach is no expert and rather see a team grind out yardage, use the clock and demoralize a defense...but zach even found himself screaming "throw the damn ball."

From your point of view (listening on the radio and no one really describing the defense) zach would be frustrated too....

Zach hates teams that don't run the ball well....Zach thinks Hobart made a decision that Marotti's big day against SLU was no big deal and he wasn't going to hurt them...At least that's what zach thinks from watching....And you know zach is a pretty big critic of play calling from his posts....Zach does not go easy on the coaches because Zach actually thinks he could do better!! (Although he probably can't)

union89

Zack ~

One more question.....by the sound of it, Marotti's passes were floating all over the place.  He sounded very inaccurate and sort of weak armed....seemed like he just couldn't get it where it needed to be.  That sounded very frustrating as well!!

zachattack22

U-89...He was floating the ball at times, then he would come back and really drill it and be very accurate...He also ran the ball impressively and his interception in the beginning of the game was a blocked ball by the D-end and the ball went straight up into the air...He made no poor decision type throws into double coverage, etc...Statistically, I wouldn't doubt if Hobart was ahead of Union as they must have thrown the ball near 50 times....But that's a good thing if you're Union...forcing a good sound team that has a balanced attack, into throwing 50 times....Marotti really did a great job...but you are right...he has a tendancy to float the ball when he should drill it and he can drill it. But his one turnover really wasn't a poor decision, but rather a great defensive play...So that's a good thing...Although U's defense gave up a lot of yards in the 2nd half, they were much more physical than Hobarts and were tougher inside the 20....When it was 14-3 with a few minutes to go in the 1st half, Hobart went for a TD on 4th down and they really should have took the easy 3 points with a FG....Would have went into halftime 14-6....They seemed to panic a bit, even when it was only 7 to zip...Not sure why....They definitely are a very good football team...

Naked Nott Run

NNR IS SUPER EXCITED...

UNION 82 was at the game. Very final part of said play, UNION 82's vision was blocked by Union team on sidelines.

UNION 82 saw Pumpkinhead receiver catch ball and get DRILLED, UNION 82 then lost sight of play, but within 0.5 second, a Union player jumped up with the ball. Hobart player was down for a few minutes.

.That was probably the HARDEST hit UNION 82 ever saw

Hobart QB floated a few passes early, but picked Union apart later with quick outs. Most of Hobart's rushing was probably from the QB scrambling, and breaking loose. Hobart did not seem to have much of a running game. They had a lot of yards passing.

Union was picked on first play from scrimmage, but it was deflected straight up in to air by the D line. Union QB did float a few, but gained control when needed.

The zebras missed a few, UNION 82 believes on pass interference. Also had a horrible "spot" on a third down play, that should have been a first down for U. Gave no forward progress.

The game could have gone different but for a few key plays.

UNION 82 got home to watch news, hoping to see that shot, and how Union ended up with ball. Channel 13 was the only one to have a 6:00 news, which was actually about 6:30 after a D-1 game. They showed about 8 minutes of HIGHSCHOOL
highlights from yesterday, and showed 2 plays of UNION-HOBART GAME!!

UNION 82 saw Channel 6 there, maybe 11:00 news on channel 6 will show shot? (Albany area channels). Didn't see channel 10, but imagine they were there somewhere.

Something is weird with Union's QoW index - It's reflecting the 9-0 (7-0 in-region) records, but the score they receive is wrong.  It should be:

Springfield (Home) (.333) (10 Pts.)
Rochester (Away) (.444) (11 Pts.)
Kings Point (Away) (.222) (9 Pts.)
WPI (Home) (.625) (12 Pts.)
Coast Guard (Home) (.250) (8 Pts.)
St. Lawrence (Away) (.250) (9 Pts.)
Hobart (Home) (.875) (14 Pts.)

Total: 73 Pts. (Avg. 10.429)

That would launch Union into the top 20 in the QoW index, which would make me agree with the assertion that Union has virtually assured itself a playoff slot with today's win.  However, I gotta say, there are a few teams with good arguments still for Pool C slots.  I'll send a post with that soon.  Yet, Union seems to be in better control after today's win.

Also note:  Utica's win and Dickinson's loss have guaranteed that RPI controls the 3-way tiebreaker in the LL.  Hobart can no longer win the LL, and because of that, will only be able to gain access to the NCAA Playoffs by Union beating RPI and Hobart beating Rochester (and the selection committee selecting Hobart as a second LL team through Pool C).

Actually, none of the QoW index scores have been adjusted for today's game.  Ithaca's hasn't been changed either I've noticed.  I'm sure it will be fixed in short order.
