Frank ~

SportsJuice did not work all day for most here unfortunately.  Had to listen to the Hobart telecast.....what were your thoughts on the game??

Well, it worked in terms of you probably could connect, but the volume was excruciatingly low.  We resolved that at halftime, and have confirmation that it worked well at that point.

What's there to think about that game?  My original statement after the third game of the season was that only Union College could beat Union College this year.  I think there still may be truth to it.  However, using that, the focus must now be on RPI.  Let's remember that with the exception of one overtime period, they too have answered the bell every time this season.

For anyone who thinks the Dutchmen are not for real or that Hobart "lost the game" yesterday, I beg to differ.  The 82-yard touchdown that sealed the game was evidence of Union being able to read a defense, provide the QB sufficient time to throw and the speed of a tremendous receiver.  The 14-3 halftime score was a result of a tremendous defense.  Sure, it should've been 14-6, but the ending score was a 10-point differential.  Hobart read Union's defense and made changes late in the first half.  However, the Union D responded.  Don't short change the Dutchmen for yesterday's performance.

Time to focus on the Shoes, Dutchmen.

Especially Frank.  He doesn't believe Frank, though.

Frank, Zach doesn't think anyone will short change this win...This wasn't a situation where Hobart did not come to play...Union dominated physically even though statisticaly things appear in hobarts favor as far as total yards.

This was a great win and let's face it....no one could ask for a better end to the regular season than what's coming this weekend....What a way for the LL to finish up....

RPI's offense is impressive and Zach believes this shows why trying to compare common opponents just doesn't work all that well...Most said let the season play out and let the head to head competition decide rankings and that's just what is happening...This is great for the LL and Zach believes both teams will naturally bring their "A" game...Zach made his prediction early last week with a scrore of Union 24, Hobart 17....

This one Zach's predicting Union 31, RPI 24....What the heck...might as well commit early on like zach did last week.  Good luck to both teams...may all players play their hearts out WITHOUT injury.....GO U!!!

to all those interested... NNR has a weird story about where he is.

After NNR's cable went out he took his labtop to USF walked into a random classroom reviewing for a test...

NNR: Sorry I'm late teach
Teacher: uhhhh
NNR grabs a seat opens labtop and begins watching football stats...Why do this rather then go to a bar...
NO IDEA, but right now I know this professor is confused as hell

nope the old 86 was killed by 2 games in the rain vs the larries and MMA.  The strange part that I just thought of is I dont think that new turf field that they put in had football lines on it????

It did not.  When TPTB moved the game to Harkness, they rather quickly installed goalposts, painted the lines, and wired WRPI up to the press box.

You wouldn't be able to say this if you stood at the Hobart sideline as I did.  When faced with adversity, the Statesmen did what is an all too typical response: attacked each other rather than relying on each other.  I couldn't believe my ears.  I knew by about five minutes into the game that Union would win because I saw the bickering on the sideline.  But like any car wreck, I had to stay an watch to see how it would unfold.

Union did not win nearly as much as Hobart lost.  Hobart's offense was Union's best squad out there.  The offensive line, particularly 58 (I think), was standing upright half the time as if they were spectators.  I specifically saw the tight end, 81, walk past a Union defender that he could have blocked simply by staying put...but chose not to take a hit for his teammate.  ZERO respect for that kid.  Never in my day would our TE have purposefully shied away from a hit.  And our team was pretty bad back then.

There were three major momentum busting penalties.  In the first quarter, Hobart got called for holding (if I recall...two guys were holding, the ref noted to coach Cragg).  This basically shot Hobart's wad for the remainder of the first half.  The other first half blunder was trying the long pass on 3rd and six inches.  Horrible play calling.  Horrible.

In the second half, Hobart was going balls to the wall when #4 absolutely flttened Union's #27, even knocking his helmet off.  The jackass (#4) stood over 27 and taunted him with the line judge no more than 3 feet away.  The a-hole cost Hobart some much needed yardage and momentum.

There was a third penalty in the fourth quarter (holding, I believe) that also didn't help much.

Then there's the fact that Hobart was first and goal a few times and couldn't seal the deal.  Disgraceful.  I think it was the worst I ever saw Mizro play.  The look in his eyes was like a kid who knew he was going to have to walk through a pack of wild dogs with raw meat in his pockets.  This kids eyes were like saucers walking into the second half.  he was scared.  I would have been too with the Offensive line standing up watching the play action happening behind them.  At first I thought they were watching the C-130 circling the field.  Actually, they would likely have been more useful had they been so distracted.

So I don't mean to take too much away from the Union guys.  The QB and #23 & #6 beeyotchslapped the Statesmen with an passing frenzy.  They were on fire.  I tell you what, without looking at stats, but going with my already fading memory, they were by far the best players on the field that day.  Everyone was there basically to let these three make plays.

This confirms my feeling that our league is not helping our team improve.  When the only teams one faces are like Coast Guard and Dickinson, it's a hell of a shock to face real competition (i.e. RPI and Union).  And when that real competition appears there are only two options: cohesion or collapse.  Men, we witness an implosion.

Congratulations, Union.  I look forward to watching the possible future Union vs. Rowan game.

Good to hear that the Rev. has already begun looking past RPI on Union's behalf.....music to RT's ears.

Rev, I was at the game and rooting as hard as I could for Union...... If that was Mizro playing poorly than I sure as heck do not want to see him play well! He was 31 for 47 for over 400 yards, great stats!

To me the difference in the game was 4 things:

#1- Union ran the ball a little better than Hobart did. (Union averaged 3.7 yds/carry to Hobarts 2.2)

#2- Union made the plays that mattered. Hobart had more plays, more yards, more 1st downs than Union did but when Union needed to make a play, they did.....and it sometimes came from unexpected places.

#3- Union protected their QB better than Hobart. Union had 5 sacks on the day and Hobart had only given up 3 all year. Mizro was under pressure on many of his pass attempts. Union gave up 1 sack.

#4- Union outhit Hobart. Especially in the 4th Quarter.

zachattack22

Rev....We've agreed and disagreed many times and that's the way its supposed to be....But Zach can't buy what the Rev is trying to sell....Zach didn't say Union steamrolled Hobart in any way shape or form...Zach believes Hobart is a very good team...What Zach said was that Union was much more physical for the most part, quicker off the ball, and clutch players made clutch plays.  Union had more than their share of holding penalites that ended drives...In the 2nd quarter, they gained 13 yards on first down with Cano, only to have it called back and make it 1st and many yards and that seemed to bust that drive up...That's football...The turnovers that Hobart had were not sloppy turnovers but the result of hard hits and smart play by U- Defense....From Zach's playing experience, when a team starts "bickering" with each other its usually because some players are getting pushed around physically and are frustrated as hell....And if it weren't for your QB, this could have been a monkey stomp...so if he played poorly, all Zach can say is that he'd hate to see him play perfect ball because the lack of any kind of running game put ALL the pressure on your QB....Zach thinks he did as well as any QB could under those circumstances...Of course Zach sees it differently than the Rev....It's difficult to see things the same way from opposing points of view...And Zach doesn't think Union will look past RPI....Most everyone Zach knows thinks RPI is dangerous!!!

Reno Hightower

PS- Mizro is clearly the best QB in the LL......as I said last night, that opinion could change next week when I see RPI's freshman.....

Union will not look past RPI. It should be another great game!!!!

zachattack22

Mizro was impressive and a class player, never giving up one bit....RPI's QB, being a freshmen, will be someone to watch for some time.....Can only get better....Marotti, still a junior, has really improved and has learned some lessons...including NOT throwing into double coverage, running with the ball or throwing it away when all else fails, and lastly, he figured out he doesn't have to be Brett Farve and win the game by himself....

New top 25 is out w/ Union in at number 24!
