I was mostly just busting balls but, I won't hide behind that since you Union guys have made predictions.

I am sure Union has improved from last year, and I know IC has stumbled on the road in games against good programs in recent years, but I still don't see this game being close.

I think IC's running game is as good as it has been since Dave Maddi and Tommy Giorgio (even better than Jamie Donovan's huge year) and I think our offense will be too good for a Union defense that was ranked 127 in the nation last year.

I just don't think a year of experience turns an underperforming 5-4 team into world beaters.

I have been wrong before but I see IC by at least 2 TDs if not more.

I'll take 24-7 and come back to eat my words if I am wrong.

union89

Union is loaded with seniors.....this HAS to be a solid year for us.  In the skill positions, UC is relatively young.....on the lines and defensive secondary, we need to win this year.

Like I said, I don't know a lot about Union's team.  I just am hearing a lot of good things about IC's team from people that aren't rah - rah booster types and, on paper at least, I don't see Union matching up with them based on last year's results.

Plus, part of the differential in my prediction is accounted for by first game jitters/miscues that IC got out of their system 6 days ago.

Like you said about your buddies.....I'm not a big rah...rah Union guy if I see problems.  Keep in mind, Union lost a couple games last year solely due to the fact that the FG kicker had a brutal year.....hopefully that problem is corrected.

Alot will come to light for both teams on Saturday.

The name of RPI's new house sounds like a conference.  It throws me off every time.

I agree, but still haven't quite figured out how to factor in the V. Varmints? Vagrants? Villains? And if any of those, would it have to be only institutions no self-respecting conference would accept?

KS figured it stood for Venereal.

Excluding athletes, how do dorks get venereal?

Happy to make it rain with a few Hamiltons to ease the pain of the whooping the Bombers are bringing to wine country.

Lack 'O respect for the Dutchmen on the front page too.....'Which ranked team has the greatest potential to lose thier opening game?'

No opportunity to even vote for Ithaca......U89 realizes this is not Ithaca's 1st game, but why even add that snippet in the question?

Union 28
Ithaca 24

Because all of the teams in the poll are ranked teams playing their first game against unranked teams playing their second. The question plays straight out of our discussion in the Around the Nation podcast.

Otherwise, crap, why not just ask the question your way ... with 25 answers? Sheesh.

I hope no one minds if The Rev lights the lamp a little early...Korea time.

Yesterday was payday.  Today is Friday.  It will take The Rev about two minutes to walk to his favorite watering hole.

Today is the anniversary of 9-11.  The Rev, in one of his few clerical moments here, asks all LLPP members to please pray for three sets of people:

1. Our enemies.  Jesus taught us to forgive our enemies...especially when we think we don't need to, or that they don't deserve it.  That's not our decision.  That's a direct order from the Great General in the Sky.  Forgiveness is an act of love, which is the only thing that can conquer hate.  I say again: Love is the only thing that can conquer hate.

2. Our servicemen who have been sent to play their part in the sequel: "Vietnam Part II, The Desert Years."  Especially remember my cousin Maj James Tully, who has only about one more month to go.  He has three kids and a wife who would like to see him again. (Not to mention the rest of us.)

3. Our friends who died on 9-11-2001, and their families.

Here's my NHS classmate Rob Peraza, who made the mistake of listening to the authorities who told him to stay put in the second tower.

dlip concurrs U89. It is that time for the U. This is a team that is heavy with seniors and has a lot of talent at the skill positions. dlip believes this is going to be a great game with some excellent break out plays on O by both teams. Grastorf (bomber QB) is making his home coming back to the Capital region and will clearly be pumped. Regardless dlip feels the U has been underrated by all this year and will make a statement here which will dictate the tone for the rest of the season. dlip hung at U's practice a bit yesterday and saw a very focused and pumped up U. All dlip kept hearing was, "I can't wait for Saturday." No question the U has a ton of respect for the Bombers and are very excited to prove themselves against such a top notch nationally ranked program. This is the beginning of the U's tough schedule in 09 and it is imperative U makes a statement here. Remember Union played (even though a scrimmage) a very good Yale team last week which has given them early season exposure and experience against serious talent.

dlip's prediction:

Union: 35
Ithaca: 30

I think a lot of the talk about this IC/Union game is about both teams offenses.  But I think the key this year might be Ithacas defense which may be one of the best in recent history.  I guess we will find out this Saturday in what should be a great game.  I say Ithaca wins 31-27 but I think people are underating Union this year as well.

pbr remembers all his friends and coworkers lost...still crushes pbr when you see spouses/parents/kids of those gone....

great book about to come out called "fading echoes" on 2 local kids/football players 1 from pbr's high school and another from our rival high school they were best friends and after 9/11 1 joined army the other marines. 1 kid in the army was killed in iraq. talks a lot about these kids and what they learned on the football field and put to use in life how they wanted to inspire people. huge critical acclaim for the book reviews call it a cross between friday night lights/deer hunter.
