We spoke of start times and travel/cost savings on this board last week.

This Saturday brings up an interesting scheduling quirk for Union.  The Dutchmen will be hosting the 'Bizarroneers' at Frank Bailey at 6:00pm.  Outside of JV games, U89 can never remember the Dutchmen playing under the lights at home.  Union has 5 home dates in '09 and this is the only contest which doesn't start at noon or 2pm.

Not a big deal, but this very odd start time at Bailey Field has U89 wondering about the reasoning.

1983 vs. Albany 7:30 p.m. start. They moved it because they expected a large crowd, and the place was packed, couldn't see grass anywhere. Which meant about 4,000 people, but even still, it was a crazy atmosphere, very cool. As opposed to the 1985 game vs. Colby, which was played on Sunday morning due to a hurricane/ noreaster, which was attended by, oh, I don't know, about 12 people.

But you're right, I can only recall two in 25 years, always surprised they didn't do more, I mean, what else is there to do in Schenectady?

Those Colby trips SUCKED.

The game is scheduled for 6pm because it makes more sense to Bring  A Child to a Game at 6pm not at 1pm.

NCAA TAKE A KID TO THE GAME DAY
For the October 3 home game against WPI, all children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult admission.

Garnet....wouldn't it make more sense to start the game at 1pm for 'Bring A Child to a Game'?  Also, this is not the 1st year of this promotion, but the 1st time they are starting it at 6pm.

I was going to ask the exact same question.  "Bring a Child to a Game" should have a 6am start.  Then even my grandma might want to go.

dlip is a traditionalist for the most part when it comes to the Dutch. The 1pm games are true to his heart but he will say that there is a certain something in the air for night games at the U. dlip feels it definitely helps with student attendance and overall atmosphere at Frank Bailey. dlip is very much looking forward to this weekend's 6pm game against the Bizarroneers but kind of wished the game started at 7. Anyway just a thought here. dlip would love to see the stupid ****in police line taken down from in front of the frat house on the opposing side of Frank Bailey so the students could get "buck ****ing wild" again in support of the Dutch. Growing up going to the games (after talking to dadlippiel since 82-83) dlip loved to listen to the students give the opposition **** from the asortment of couches and furniture that was arranged for the students viewing pleasure. dlip's pop never let him sware or listen to swearing as a kid but the U games behind the students at the frat house was always the exception. Open ****in season there. Ah the Dutchmen memories!

In deference to the fact that most of the Alfred townspeople (and much of the faculty and staff) were Sabbathkeepers (Friday sundown to Saturday sundown), Alfred traditionally played its games on 8 p.m. Saturdays. And, here in Mayberry, there really wasn't much else to do on an autumn Saturday night, so Merrill Field was often filled to capacity back in those days....--err--nights.

To facilitate football at AU (and to keep the Sabbatarians happy), Merrill Field was one of the first football fields in the country to be lighted. Pep is guessing here that it was probably in the early 1930s.

Pep knows a good number of AU fans who'd like to go back to playing Saturday night games, but AU can't seem to schedule early season games against opponents with less than 5 or 6 hours travel, which, understandably, means they'd rather not get back to their campus at 5 a.m.
On Saxon Warriors! On to Victory!
...Fight, fight for Alfred, A-L-F, R-E-D!

Bought it last week for post-surgery reading, but started, "Rat Bastards" by John 'Red' Shea first.  U89 figured that with taking Oxy's he might not be able to follow a Dan Brown book right off the bat.  "The Lost Symbol" will be started later this week.

P.S. - To anyone who enjoyed "Black Mass", you will love, "Rat Bastards".

If U89 were on that team, he may have to beat that kid around the head and neck area.....repeatedly.

Greatest move in the history of LLPPFFL......U89 just dropped RB, Peyton Hillis of the Broncos and picked up RB, Willie Parker of the Steelers.

JT, care to explain the unorthodox move of simply cutting a health Willie Parker from your squad?
