Re: Tufts

Gro has a friend that went to Tufts. One time Gro and the doid crew went to visit for the weekend which happened to be Tufts spring party weekend (spring fling? spring fest? something like that). They had an outdoor concert with none other than LL Cool J.... weird right? Bunch of preppy kids getting down to "hey lover". So you know he's gotta do "Mama said knock you out" and the kids are semi moshing around. One kid is crowd surfing and he's coming towards gro and friends. Said kid comes into gro airspace and through a feat of strength science has yet to explain Gro was able to catch and launch the tufts undergrad into the stratosphere. His fall was slightly broken by a few other kids then he hit the ground with a nice thump.

Turns out the kid lived in the same dorm as my friend and gro was able to meet him later in the night and reminice about the time he flew gro airlines.

and that's gro's Tufts story.

One Time, Regulator took a ride on LD11 airlines...Scientifically of course.

TGP once flew Flight 32 on "PIG" airlines at Lalapalozza in Syracuse back in the day (guessing 94-95 time frame).

32 was the starting FB at Hobart and a good buddy of mine (32 going about 6' 240lbs) and 32 had his buddy "Pig" (6' 2" 300lbs) in tow for the festival as well.

TGP at the time was around 175-180 and at some point during the Soundgarden set both 32 and Pig srprise shotputted TGP into crowd surfing mode.  TGP wasn't expecting this sudden launch nor were the nearby moshers.  Although no troubles came of this (who wants to start a fight with a guy who goes by Pig?), TGP ultimately had a similiar landing as the Tufts kid who took Gro airlines.

What a damn braggart.

Quick note about night games at Union.  I had compiled the results of Union in night games since 2003, both home and away.  The first night game I was ever a part of in my 15 seasons at Union's Frank Bailey Field in 2003 -- when Union hosted WPI and won on a last-second field goal (19-16).

Night games at Union became more feasible following a freak accident in 1998 when a light standard came crashing down near the Phi Delta Theta ("50 Yard Line") house.  After this accident due to a major windstorm that swept through the area, Athletic Director Richard Sakala replaced all of the standards as it was a good excuse to improve the lighting around the field for potential night uses for the field.

Since 2003, there has been a night game at Bailey Field every season until 2008 -- when only four home games were played due to the reduced nine-game schedule that year.  There has been an abundance of success with the night games, although cooler temperatures have tempered some of the success in terms of crowd sizes.  Often, the night game has been placed around "Hall of Fame Weekend" so that the induction ceremony could draw more attention without the football game itself getting in the way of the proceedings -- and to aid in the crowd size in the first place.

Prior to 2003, the last night game in which Union participated was in 1994 at SUNY-Albany.  There were rumors of a lot of antics that occurred surrounding that game based on its later starting time and the rivalry that had existed between the teams.  It would be nine years before a Dutchmen team would play under darkness again -- but it has become a nice tradition over the last few years.

As I said, when I get to my other computer, I'll load in the results of Union night games since 2003.

dlip used to love back in the day when U used to annually take out Albany ST. He actually thinks he may have detested Albany (at the time) more that RPI (Albany was much more competitive during those years than RPI) which may be hard to believe. dlip will never forget or forgive the Danes for running up the score against Union in their last meeting. Sporting a D1/2 size roster in November of 1997 Albany 54 Union 0. Ford was classless running up the score and passing all over the Dutch to their 8 foot TE. dlip never walked away from a Union game so pissed in his life. If Bob Ford was in front of him after that game that stupid hat he wears would have been properly placed! As dlip recalls Albany starters never left the field. All kidding aside that was a rivalry to remember.

True, back in U89's playing days, Albany St. was a bigger rival than RPI.  We discussed this a few years ago in LLPP and the 'boys of troy' were insulted by the topic......you could be opening up a powder-keg here, dlip...... :o

For yours truly, that day was a nightmare.  It was a very rainy day, and my on-field commentator pretty much flat-out refused to do post-game interviews.  I couldn't blame him, but we promised some interviews -- and I decided that, as you said dl, the issue of running up the score needed to be addressed since Ford left his starters in the game into the 4th quarter.  So, I descended onto the field and worked with the Albany SID at the time to get Ford live.

We got to Ford and as I began the LIVE interview, Roger Wyland ("Big Board Sports Talk" and WNYT's (NBC 13) Sports Director in the Capital Region) jumps in front of me, pushing my microphone away (literally) to do his pre-recorded interview with Ford on Union's field.  Needless to say, I was pissed.  The Albany SID could tell, and he restrained me a bit -- I wasn't going to slug Wyland, but I was going to exchange words about the classless act -- one of many that day.

When I finally got to Ford, I brought up the "running up the score" question.  He started to walk away from me when I asked the question, saying they pulled the starters in the 3rd quarter.  He looked to the SID, who told him sheepishly that he hadn't.  It was that day that I recognized the difference between a true "Head Coach" and a figurehead coach that is there more for the recruiting than the day-to-day operations of the team.  I have complete respect for Ford and his coaching philosophies over the years -- and for the coaching products that have come out of his system.  It was just a little embarrassing for everyone that he didn't know when he pulled his own starters in such a situation.

I got back upstairs to the Press Box, and Wyland came upstairs after we had signed off on WRUC.  I said, "Roger..." and he thought I was saying hello to him.  I continued, "That was pretty classless what you did down there.  Don't ever push my hand aside again."  He acted like he didn't do such a thing and kept walking to his place in the Press Box.  That's the last time I ever had a face-to-face with him -- and I'm not unhappy about that fact.

In my time with Union, I have worked around and even with Doug Sherman from CBS 6 and John Spadafora from ABC 10 and had nothing but laughs and courteous moments with them.  So, it's not a media thing generally.  I blame it on one hell of a bad day on Frank Bailey Field in 1997 when courtesy was thrown out the window and a rivalry took on too much bitterness in its final episode.  That's my two cents on my experience around the Albany/Union rivalry.

dlip hears ya and definitely no offense to RPI because in dlips mind the RPI/Union rivalry is the best and most intense on Earth. As a Yanks fan people are always like, "Don't you hate the Red Sox?" Not really, Dustin Pedroia is dlips favorite player. Dlip has such respect for RPI that it turns into serious dislike. Sometimes a dislike dlip has to check at the door and remind himself that it is only a rivalry. Believe dlip, nothing fuels a fire more than RPI/Union in dlips world. It was just for dlip from like 85-97 he simply detested Albany State and Bob Ford.

I had read that Welch and Audino had coached under Ford at Albany at the same time.  I have never heard anything but good things about Ford but maybe he was just a figure head like Frank says.  I never met the man.

Albany was pretty horrible in 1992-1995 although we had a close one at Albany in 1994 I believe.  Albany was also d3 and d2 then I think too though.  There was also a year when I was home from College or right after college (1997-2000?) where Northeastern played Albany at Northeastern and NU beat them like there was no Tommorow.  Maybe Albany decided to bully up on a d3 team when they couldn't hack the division they were supposed to be in.

But Gro did show us those rankings where UAlbany was basically in the top 10 'worst list' in like 50 different categories.
