mini rant...

Comcast cable has done a great job in the past year adding HD channels. Went from 15 to 30 to over 60 now at no additional cost. They also brought back the NFL network... but only in standard def. NFL HD costs extra. what's up with that? I demand to see Rich Eisen in HD!

gro...if possible to go to do what pbr did and kick comcastic to the curb and go FIOS baby...verizon gives them a beat down in every category....HD picture isnt even close verizon crushes it. customer service much better w/ verizon and internet speeds are light years apart...pbr still laughs when over at friends house and everyone on the street is on the internet w/ comcast its like watching dial up all over again...plus FIOS channel lineup is sooooo much better...its time to come to the dark side and seek FIOS if/when available

You must have a different Verizon than I have.

[Granted, I don't have Comcast--my local CATV monopoly is Cox Communications--but Verizon screwed up my bill for 11 straight months after I accepted their $89/month offer that came in the mail.  Week after week, I was on the (Verizon) phone with Verizon reps who assured me that they never sent me that $89/month brochure--I had to fax it to them (over the Verizon phone lines) to convince them.]

your the first person pbr has heard doesnt like verizon...literally 100s of people in pbr knows have made the switch and never looked back. hence why comcasts cable contracts are tanking. they had a big article on it in philly newspaper a month or two ago about how comcast is losing cable customers to verizon in herds...

I concur PBR.  I have had Direct TV, Comcast and now Verizon over the last 10 years, and Verizon Fios blows the others away.  Direct TV actually wasn't that bad, but changing the channels on HD was just 1/100 slower than Verizon Fios is, and that did it for me.

The city of Boston does not allow Verizon Fios and Comcast has a monopoly on the city.  Kind of a big issue in Boston where the city basically wants Verizon to pay 10/50/100/x million dollars in fees to install it.  Verizon refuses to pay the blackmail to the mayor and cronies that run this city.

Most of the people KS knows in the Jersey City/Hudson County area either still can't get FIOS or it sucks when they get it.  The infrastructure here is too old for it KS thinks.  KS is probably keeping Comcast for the internet and will get Direct TV.  Direct TV will save KS about 15 - 20 bucks a month and increase his channels by about 100.

Have you ever had a customer service experience with Comcast that was as bad as my 11 month ordeal with Verizon?  That 11 months of screwed up billing included the 6 weeks that it took them just to connect my telephone so that it could both send and receive calls.

I was only referring to Verizon's customer service.  Their web-based customer service is hardly any better, since their phone dept. doesn't play nice with their high speed internet dept. (which has schizophrenia, since there's now DSL high speed internet and FIOS internet--I have DSL, and I've been told by helpful Verizon reps that since FIOS is available in my neighborhood, I no longer have twisted copper wires running to my house.  They haven't been able to explain how I still have DSL--which can only operate over twisted copper wires--now that my twisted copper wires have been replaced with fiber optic cable), which doesn't play nice with the wireless dept., . . . .

OTOH, I've never heard anything but rave reviews of the quality of the FIOS signal.

r u kidding pbr? gheesh let me and 10's of thousands count the ways...billing errors were almost monthly...every month pbr would get different bills/amount/channel i.e. pay per view events/movies take your pick...cant begin to tell you the amount of errors they had. Outages...numerous outages..."hmmm...strange mr. pbr we dont see anything going on, everyone looks to be running fine.  pbr: well why does/has my tv have nothing but snow on it for the last 6 hours? its looks like poltergeist is about to walk into my house any minute!!! comcast: well i dont really know what we can do for you since all our systems show everything working fine."   Internet: PATHETIC.... at least u have dsl! comcast's version of speed at times lags behind dial up 33.6 modems...my commodore 64 was quicker back in the day...saturday mornings when the entire neighborhood was on the internet it was laughable how slow a page would paint....AGAIN complaints went nowhere as their ENTIRE network is NOT fiber optics like verizon and showed its limitations constantly. Quality of picture isnt in the same millenium...verizons HD just blows away comcast as everyone agrees on that...Verizon needs only 1 dvr box for the house...i can lie in bed and watch a movie i recorded on the dvr box downstairs. The list goes on and on not even mentioning channel lineups!!  AND pbr lives in comcasts backyard they have their corporate HQ in philly!!

COMCAST always finished the conversation whenever pbr called to complain... "well sir your always welcome to go to another cable provider..."  w/ a smart azz tone in their voice. knowing full well there wasnt another option (before verizon came to town) so pbr called to cancel comcast their line of "we value you as a customer what can we do to keep you..." rang very hollow and pbr told them to shove it that there was a new sheriff in town. come pickup your boxes i will leave them outside the door and btw dont forget its raining right now...pbr is 1 of countless who have all had the same problems w/ comcast and gladly kicked them to the curb and has never looked back....

end of rant and off the soapbox and back to regularly scheduled llpp programming...

PBR, you are lucky if most of the Verizon network is fiber-optic where you live.  It is still mostly copper wire in NY and northeast NJ, which is why cable is better up here than FIOS.  KS wishes T-Mobile or someone else would get into the internet and or TV business, KS has never had a big issue with T-Mobile in over 8 years, couple of screwed up billing cycles when changing plans but nothing major.

yup they rewired everything several years ago...verizon is biting the bullet and looking long term. they are spending billions rewiring everything knowing w/ fiber there is really no limits and who knows everything they will be piping down the lines in the future. verizon wont be limited by capacity w/ fiber they will be handle any speed/data rates in the future....at&t is now doing cable tv as well but they didnt want to spend the capital and are going down the copper lines. they wont have the quality and speed obviously but are coming in a lot cheaper than verizon/comcast.  comcast is trying to catch up to verizon w/ fiber but are many years behind.

Verizon Multi-Room DVR sucks.  It is fine if you are playing the recorded show on the DVR Machine, but when you try to play it back on any other receiver on the network, it is slow to respond to button pushes and does not FF and RW properly through the commercials.

Best DVR I had was DishNetwork which had a dual receiver.  One receiver controlled two TVs so you could record on either one and play back normally on either one.

I don't understand why DirecTV doesn't offer multi-room DVR yet--at least not in my DC-area suburb, especially when DishNetwork is offering it, as well as Verizon FIOS, AT&T U-Verse, and most CATV providers.

I've studied the economics of public utilities, and I've never found any economic justification for granting monopolies to cable signal providers.  A government-franchised monopoly such as COMCAST should be fined heavily for saying such patently offensive nonsense to their captive customers.  Better yet, they should have their franchise revoked, and the market should be opened wide.

On occasion I work with cable/telephone companies in the field.  The union workers like the copper wire because the stuff (underground and pole wires) breaks down all the time and needs to be fixed, ecpecially in the northeast.  The fiberoptic stuff is good for 10,000 years.  Bad for the repairmen, good for the company once the stuff is installed.

The fios guy came out to my house and spend literally 8 full hours hooking the stuff up.  Fantastic.

call them because mine works perfect everytime. ff/rw anything pbr does it works nicely. pbr is also starting in on those widgets on the remote....pretty cool little things that work nicely.

btw since the eagles were off last sunday pbr was watching "in the red zone" non stop. seeing how all pbr's players were doing in the $$ ffl and llppffl...a very cool thing indeed.

Moved this summer and have Brighthouse Cable at the new house.  Basic cable came free (with the Neighborhood) and upgraded to Digital DVR on one set right now.  Bedroom TV is about to die, so when I replace that I'll get the second DVR for that room.

Cablevision still blows Verizon FIOS away with internet speed in North Jersey.  Negotiated a great deal with Cablevision when FIOS came a calling.  JT would really like NFL Ticket but has weak SW exposure.  Generally has no problems with Cablevision.  A splitter was failing two weeks ago, and was properly diagnosed by the tech over the phone.  Easier for JT to go to Radio Shack than the local office, so JT got Cablevision to credit the $10 for the splitter.
