[Some things to think about while Pep is driving through a dismal downtown that once was bustling with businesses.

Pep, C'mon, you've got the rest of the year to be miserable, enjoy the Saxon's trip to the NCAA's, and worry about that crap later.

For sure, Pep is pumped...the band was on its game Saterday and Pep is looking for a similar performance this week. The AU Pep Band is comprised of:
--flute player from Reading, PA, whose parents are alums of Albright, AU's opponent
--a glockenspiel and percussion player from Lansdale, PA, near Doylestown, PA (Del Val) (whose parents will host us if we get that far)
--a sousaphone player from Peninsula, OH whose twin plays in the Mt. Union Marching Band (and who will host us if we get that far)
--a trumpet player from Hanson, MA whose parents hosted the band at the season opener Sept. 5
--a trombone player from Syracuse who has secured a special allocation to reimburse the band's gas money

This band is special, with its members so serendipituously gathered so as to provide for its every need along a (hopefully) long run into the playoffs. Stay tuned!

city of pittsburgh trying to tax college students? wtf? carniegie mellon students its time to dig a little deeper....pbr would tell them to shove it....

PITTSBURGH, Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Pittsburgh Mayor Luke
Ravenstahl said he wants to impose a 1 percent tax on tuition
paid by students at the city's seven colleges and universities.
USA Today said Monday that Ravenstahl is adding the tax
plan to his 2010 budget and the proposed tuition tax has
already drawn opposition from at least one local education
official.
"He calls it a fair share tax. We call it an unfair
tax," Carlow College President Mary Hines said, referring
to the mayor and his tax plan.
Hines, who is also head of the Pittsburgh Council on
Higher Education, said the tuition tax could also impact
Pittsburgh's appeal to potential students in the future.
"We want them to realize they are coming to an
exciting city that will welcome them with open arms. This does
not do that," she said.
The student cost of the tax plan, which comes as
Pittsburgh is facing a $15 million budget gap, could range from
$20 for Carlow College students at Carlow College to $400 for
students at the pricier Carnegie Mellon University.
"It's a new and untapped potential source of
revenue," Terry Hartle of the American Council on
Education told USA Today of the tax plan.

It's like these bozos have never heard of the Laffer Curve.
Typical of the morons who run our country.  Tax is a disincentive, so--all other things being equal-- students who would go to Pittsburgh schools will go elsewhere where there is no tax.  Schools in the same category as CMU, Duquesne, Pitt, etc., should be licking their chops saying, "Yes! Tax them! Tax them!" so they can get the run-off.  Rival schools and cities can advertise "Tax Free Tuition!"

I know I am a bit late to the thread but the post regarding the USPS loss of revenue reminded me of what a friend of mine said about General Motors, "They're an HMO that makes cars and trucks."

Government is suffering from a continued climb in salaries and benefits without the accompanying rise in revenue to offset such guarantees - sounds like a trip down the socialist trail to me.

Good luck to all playoff teams but especially the ones from the East.

I still cannot figure how Lycoming beat Susquehanna and they are in the playoffs.

Sometimes I do not get French fashion - jez vee un espion, indeed.

There was talk in Boston of the same silly stuff.  Simply aint gonna happen.  Schools are better for cities plain and simple.

Time to impose this on the Alfred schools.  Pep and the rest of the townies are raising their taxes by 2.5% but sticking those of us in the village with a 3% hike.  Gotta move that cost over to the students!!!

Pep was thinking the same thing. This is a brilliant idea. 90% of property within the Village of Alfred is educationally tax-exempt, meaning the owners of the remaining 10% of property within the Village pay the property taxes. Mind you, the University has PILOTS in place for income-producing properties such as the Saxon Inn, and PILOTS for former Greek housing now owned by the University, but neither AU nor Alfred State College, in Pep's opinion, does enough.

Of course, the tuition tax should be collected by the colleges and handed over to the Village (and Town, as well) as a means of "Revenue Sharing."

And what about the for-profit eateries on the ASC campus? Shouldn't the licensing of a for-profit franchise on the campus of an educational institution also include some form of property taxation for generating a profit on tax-exempt property?

Some things to think about while Pep is driving through a dismal downtown that once was bustling with businesses.

Pep is this you speaking in the village?

That's about the highlight of our season.  Bryant is a beast, and it will be very difficult to replace his production on the defensive interior next year.  Hope he gets a shot at the NFL.  Heard he might get some looks as more of a LB.
