I guess I got confused.

My whole point was I think the Gagliardi should be treated more like the Heisman...and simply give the award to the best player in the country.

The Gagliardi can do whatever it wants...I don't have a problem with that.

Those two things don't seem to really coincide. No doubt, you can have an opinion, but your opinion suggests they should change the underlying philosophy of the whole award. In which case, there really should be another award.

I agree...if that is the direction that the Gagliardi is going to stay in...that they are not naming the POY, but the Student/Athlete of the year...then lets hope another award steps up.  Hopefully the Melberger Award continues to get better (minus 02-04) as they name the actual POY...

I'm with Pat here... its a great award for the Spirit of D3 football.  Who cares if some outsider looks at it and doesn't know that its not a true POY award type.

**Also... maybe the LLPP could sponsor a new award.  We could have the 1st presentation at 'gro's palatial estate in beautiful Chattanooga TN.   Gro, LD, dlip and pbr would the on the committee to determine who is on the committee... and they could announce the finalists in between car bombs in Salem, VA's finest bar.

I'm connected with D3football.com and would have been the first person to congratulate the Miss. College QB if he had won the Gagliardi Trophy on Thursday Night.  If it wouldn't bother me, why would you sit there attempting to use this site's lists to undercut the Trophy?

Have to disagree here with you, Frank.  I think you'd probably have been at least 3rd or 4th.  Unless you are quick and have good line-jumping skills.

But I do agree... whomever wins the award, its a great award and they should be very proud.  I almost won it once... then the alarm clock went off, waking me up from my slumber.

I came across this little story on another site. Who comes up with this stuff?

so I was with my friend bryan the other night in a bar
well he got really drunk and said he was gonna puke
so i helped him walk to the toilet
all the stalls were occupied
lol
bryan is a rugby player... so a big guy
so he f*cking KICKS one of the stall doors open
and there's this guy in there taking a sh*t
hahahahahaha
and bryan throws up ALL OVER HIM
then (this is genius) bryan thinks 'oh sh*t... if i were taking a sh*t and someone came in and was sick all over me, i'd want to f*ck him up... so i'd better hit him first'
so he f*cking SMACKS this guy in the face
and runs away
imagine being that guy... WORST NIGHT OUT EVER

I think there's one other thing we need to keep in mind here -- the nominations for this award come from the schools, not from the Gagliardi committee. There are players at Mount Union and UW-Whitewater who could be considered national player of the year candidates, but I don't believe the players they nominated fit that description.

If Mount Union had nominated Cecil Shorts and UW-Whitewater had nominated Levell Coppage, would we be having this discussion? Now, all I know is what these guys do on the football field, but from a football standpoint, I don't think too many people would have your kind of reaction to those guys being finalists.

I kinda like that there isn't a D3 POY award.  All these players have a chance to win the Heisman for the most outstanding player in college football and while that is outside the realm of statistical chance, if their goal was to win that award they should have gone D-I.  So, honoring student athletes seems much more appropriate for D3.

I can see both sides of the Gagliardi discussion.

On the one hand, I think it's great that the Gagliardi considers more than just a football players performance on the field when chosing finalists and winners. The fact that an Offensive Lineman from a team not in the Top 25 can win this award is all that is right with this award. And with all of the other stuff associated with big time sports, considering what a person does for the community is fantastic.

On the other hand, it does seem strange to have 2nd and 3rd team all-region players as finalists. I realize that there is no alignment between the two, but I would think that there has to be some certain level of football performance. Of course, one man's opinion can vastly differ from anothers, so not sure how hard and fast you can make that.

All in all, I think they picked a great winner, and in my mind this remains the best award in college football, and I'm glad it's not a POY or MVP award. The Gagliardi exemplifies all that is right with DIII football (Mt. Union vs. UWW in the final for the 5th straight time exemplifies all that is wrong with DIII football, but that's another topic for another day).

The nice thing about d3 football is that when they say "student athlete" they aren't kidding, unlike many in division 1.

I agree...my whole point was that I do not want to see the Gagliardi turn into nothing more then a glorified All-Academic POY.  I am a bit surprised that more folks don't want to see an actual POY named.  I don't think that will take away any of the "greatness" that is D3 football.  Region or League POY awards don't...why would a National POY?

Plus, offensive linemen are habitually the smartest and best looking players on a football field.
