Dlip, the Texas Tech trainer that seemed to back Leach a couple days ago did an about face in an affidavit:

http://www.newser.com/article/d9cvs84g0/texas-tech-trainer-tells-university-officials-he-didnt-agree-with-treatment-of-james.html

Texas Tech AD:  So I heard you're looking for a new job.
Trainer:  Sir?
Texas Tech AD: I saw you on ESPN the other day backing up Leach.
Trainer: -gulp-
Texas Tech AD:  Or was I mistaken?
Trainer: I guess what I said didn't really come out right.  For the record Leach is a rat bastard and I'm glad he's gone.
Teaxs Tech AD: What are you trying to say?
Trainer: I'm a team player, sir.  Leach wasn't.
Texas Tech AD: I thought so.

Exactly....+1, Rev.  Leach may be a bit of a difficult dude to deal with, but he's one helluva college football coach.  Look where Texas Tech was, Pre-Leach and re-examine the program in 2 years.  Leach put TT football on the map and they will now plummet back down to a below average program.  You can question Leach's actions in this process, but James obviously had a huge ax to grind vs. the Head Coach.

The kid was not placed in a small, dank electrical closet...could Leach have handled the situation better?  Sure.  Should he have been fired for this incident?  No way.

Remember, though, that according to the trainer now, Leach WANTED James locked in the electrical closet and probably was told/assumed that James was placed in there.  In my estimation, Leach wasn't fired because of the incident itself.  He was fired because he furthered the media circus that was created by his acts in the first place by seeking an injunction and threatening to sue his then-current employer.

Put in another way -- you can't use the situation you yourself created as a sword and a shield when it's a pretty ugly situation you created in the first place.  Did the $800k help?  No, as it gave extra incentive to fire him.  However, Leach tried to make every little squabble he had with the school become way too public.

It's weird that Leach learned nothing from a former Texas Tech coach that got fired from his prior employer for doing EXACTLY the same things in turns of media abuse following his bad acts -- Bob Knight.

JT is feeling like he's back from the dead.  Not from New Year's partying, but from a hamburger gone wrong. We were visiting MJT's Mom in the hospital on the 1st.  She had a minor procedure done.  It was late, many places were closed for New Year's... so we stopped at this burger joint called the Fireplace.  KS might know it (Its on 17 North... near the Fashion Center before Ridgewood Ave.)

Anyway its one of the oldest burger joints in country.  Never had a problem before.  They serve up the burger and you dress it yourself.  MJT had pickles, relish, and Ketchup.  JT had pickles, relish, raw chopped onions, and Ketchup.  Suffice it to say, JT later woke at 2am Saturday with two exits, no waiting.

Food poisoning...  Saturday was like death warmed over.  Was able to handle some Gatorade by the afternoon.  Just starting to eat a little.

Come to find out that raw onions can be a magnet for bacteria, especially left out and handled by many people.  Wish MJT saw JT dress his burger, she dropped this knowledge on JT after he was already dying.

The Rev feels for you, JT.  The Rev has had scrumpdillyicious food make a glorious entrance and then beat a nasty retreat too many times.

The Rev doesn't know said hamburger joint, but next time he is in the good ol' US of A, he'll fly into Newark and check it out.

flipping through the cable guide last night discovery has a show called "Impaled!" (the exclamation point is there to show you that this ain't no regular impalement program). There was no program information on the guide so did I watch it? You cotdamn right I did. Holy ish, first story was of a US soldier that took a RPG to the hip but it didn't detonate. Gro said "no mas" after another story where a dood took a 12" drill bit in the face. Both survived.

please tell me someone else in LLPP land caught this show.

As the first person on LLPP to cross the dateline, I wish you all a Happy New Year.
Currently 2:30 am, 1 Jan 2010.

The Rev was at "The Beatles" bar and the place was like a ghost town.  Rev spent the evening talking to the bar tender who is only 21.  nice to spend some time with a girl half one's age, innit?  Yes it is, even if nothing comes of it.

First... Happy New Year everyone... I had some reading to do to catch up... and this caught my eye.

SF's experience as a 32 year old divorcee --- is that the girls around my age who are single are flawed emotionally if they are attractive (at least in the Cincy area).  So SF tries to go younger in the mid-20's, so don't feel bad Rev.  Maybe SF needs to move to a new city like Hotlanta or South Florida (and is considering this as his company looks at expansion).

Seems like a pair of jack@sses here, Leach seemed to be petty here, but in the end the player wasn't harmed in any way, just embarrassed. Also, the James gang come across looking like a pair of douches. The kid shows up with an injury, but decides to wear street clothes, sunglasses, etc. to practice. No one know's better than Doid that if you're not going to practice, you keep a LOW profile, wear the jersey, ride the bike, etc. Then throw in the Dad's meddling (notice no one is disputing that accusation), and they come across looking like jerks. I also find it funny that everyone still at Tech is changing or softening their stories now that Leach is gone.

I also see the hypocrisy in Texas Tech trying to position itself as the moral authority here, given that they hired above referenced Bob Knight to coach after his documented past behavior. Nope, no one wins here, except for some lawyers, because I think that Texas Tech is going to have a hard time denying Leach his money unless they have some additional charges against him, and it's going to be a long and messy public airing of this whole situation.

Go south, young man, trust me on this one. Sure, the girls look hotter down here, but it's more about their attitude. Just the culture down here, girls seem more subservient to men down here, put up with mens ish more, not only do they let their men watch and go to football games, more often then not they are just as into it.

I remember on my first trip to Phoenix, calling my dad and angrily asking why in thee hell my college choices were in Schenectady, Middlebury, Hartford, Hamilton, etc., and not Phoenix, or Florida, or California. Still hold a grudge against the old man for that one...

has anyone been on www.thedirty.com ??  SF discovered this over the Holiday Break and had some time to peruse, found a few girls that he knows on the Cincy page of it --- very funny.

spot on analysis....all 3 are j@ck@ss's .... reading how much craig james was involved in all of this is ridiculous. factor in being a media on air personality it shows what an @ss he really is. his son showing up like he should be playing at da U or florida st. espn's handling of this whole mess also really irks pbr....how 'bout some objective reporting for once? thats right pbr forgot we are talking about espn which  their investigative reporting is as good as (pick any rag newspaper/magazine) espn has lost so much credibility in the last 10 years...they had leach swinging from the gallows in the town square from minute 1.  all 3 of these peep's deserve each other and probably should throw espn in there as well...

I heard that the 'closet' was the size of a  1 car garage.  82 has a 1 car garage and Mrs 82 has threatened to relegate 82 to it many times.  Mrs 82 should take heed of what happened to Mr. Leach.

82 would note that the 1 car garage is not small enough to warrant the firing that Leach got.  Craig James is a biatch.  Wasnt it rumored that he was doing coke the night before the '86 Super 'Blowout' that his Patriots got whacked in?  Anyone recall that?  82 seems to remember his rushing stats to be something like 13 carries for minus 8 yards???

Jonny Utah

The whole issue I had with this whole Texas Tech thing is that Leech was initially supsended because of the incident, then Leech goes to the courts and then Texas Tech ends up firing him?  Maybe Frank can add something about this but it seems like Leech might have a case here now against Texas Tech.

Doid23

Not sure how I missed this, but it is fantastic.

From Stewart Mandels CNNSI column:

"Bowl-week festivities have led to all manner of infamous incidents at various games over the years, from Miami players' staged walkout of a Fiesta Bowl steak-fry in 1986 to Virginia Tech linebacker Vince Hall's jet ski injury prior to last year's Orange Bowl.

This year's East Carolina Liberty Bowl dessert fracas may take the cake (hah!).

Coach Skip Holtz suspended junior running back Jonathan Williams and redshirt freshman running back Leonard Paulk for Saturday's game after the two brawled in front of a banquet room full of people at the Liberty Bowl's annual awards luncheon last Thursday. One player had the other in a headlock, nearly turned over a table and had to be separated by assistant coaches, according to reports.

The cause of their dispute? A dessert. Seriously."

JT thinks it was this guy 82 is thinking of:

In 1989, Stanley Wilson, a fullback with the Cincinnati Bengals, was found impaired by cocaine in his hotel room the night before Super Bowl XXIV in Miami. The next day, the Bengals lost a 20-16 heartbreaker to San Francisco."

He did not play.  JT remembers Boomer Esiason recently saying Wilson ran harder when he was high, but that not playing him the Super Bowl was the right decision.
