The Rev just can't stand any of these media whores chirping anyone.

P.S.  BTW, the Rev would like to apologize to any whores who are offended by being compared to Mass Media.  I respect your profession, as you serve a valued purpose in this world, while the mainstream media does not.

How come my Rev doesn't talk like that? Cmon, Rev, lose the day job and go back to being a Rev, I'd go to church every day and twice on Sundays. We could get you a TV show (hell, a TV channel), and I guarantee that kind of sermonizing would make you rich beyond your wildest dreams. + K for the rant.

JT's Catholic.  One of the biggest beefs JT has with Catholic religion is not letting priests marry.  They used to allow it.  The reason they stopped, M-O-N-E-Y.  If priest had little or no family, the church would get most or all of the priest's estate.  Certainly helped turn it into the wealthiest religion.

Let em have families.

Hey Teddy...hmmmm JT, never really have any reason to question your logic, but on this one....If priest has little or no family and presumably follows the priesthood and remains loyal to the church, how much money (assets) is he going to die with anyway???

I actually agree that Priests should be able to marry...JC himself had no beef with marriage.  I just dont buy the reasoning you are offering.  Please explain.

Priests were allowed to marry during the 1st century.  I would think that back then priests were not peasants.  They owned land, a home, livestock, and maybe even the church.  A wife and children would generally get the most of the estate. Even with tithing, perhaps the church thought it was getting stiffed at a time when it was trying to grow.  I think the celibacy thing is bunk. What better way to show your faith then to bring a family up in the church?

Even today a $100K estate per priest is not unreasonable, many accumulate some assets: stock, car, jewelry etc.  Also, quite often priests get life insurance with the beneficiary being the church.  Nuns often do the same.  A 20 something can get a 100K universal policy with growing cash value for about $500 a year.  $750 or so in their 30's.  I'm not saying this is wrong.  I just think a priest or a nun should be able to build a family within the church.  I think it would make the church better.

I was briefly a financial planner during the Bush I recession.  A nun picked up my card from somewhere.  It led to a cottage industry for about 2 years.  That combined with substitute teaching kept JT rolling.

A minor issue might be nepotism.  A priest could install his son as his successor, preventing the church from installing their own man.

Why can you have a family pre-priesthood or sisterhood but not afterwords?

Celibacy did not emerge until WELL after the first century - try closer to the twelfth (I can't find the date right now).  This led to many nepotism scandals, up to and including the papacy.

Nonetheless, avoiding nepotism obviously does not necessitate celibacy.  Corporations (mostly) and democracies have avoided hereditary rulers (well, with the possible exception of the Bushes! ;D).

EDIT: Celibacy was recommended earlier, but was not enforced until Gregory VII in 1074-75 (so eleventh century).

Cash was still a major player in this deal. I was just googling time period, but I was nailing the CCD teacher way back when, because I smelled a rat.  In fact my CCD teacher, eighth grade was a priest. He is now married with kids.  I take full credit.

It didn't make sense that you could have a family before, but not after.

mattvsmith

wow!

Who would have guessed that we would have ended up talking about priestly celibacy on the LLPP?
Some good, well-informed posts.  As one who had made the agreement to never marry (although I am not bound to it since I was never ordained) being celibate isn't as bad as most people think, and it is definitely not the cause of the sex scandal.  Those dudes had problems, and they didn't do what they needed to do to solve their deeper problems.
The number one thing it takes is a life of very deep and regular prayer.  We have the Daily Office, which requires prayer of all 150 psalms and other material in a monthly cycle.  Without that, a man is completely powerless to overcome the barriers--both natural and supernatural--to be a good priest.

The Rev doesn't want to get too into it, but when it comes to priests, you get the best and worst of humanity.  It has a way of polarizing, and pulling out extremes.  There are some guys that think the roman collar gives them the right to do anything they want.  If they were cops, they be the kind of cops who would shoot am innocent man in the back and plant on gun on him.  Instead, they end up running roughshod over people's souls.  The Rev's last superior was like that.  Notice: last superior.  On the other hand, The Rev has never met people as good as the good priests he's known.  Thank God that there have been a lot of good ones in Rev's life. Unfortunately, the cream of the crop The Rev knew has died off.

I wonder if I could get back in if I told them that I could bench 275, run the 40 with blazing speed, and promised above all that I am Huge?

Lyco80

Not a priest, but I am a Navy chaplain, and United Methodist (disclosure).

Previous posts discussed poverty - order priests - as opposed to diocesan priests - take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, typically.

Principal orders are:  Franciscan, Jesuit, Dominican, Benedictine, Paulist, Carmelite, etc.  This list is instructive but not exhaustive.

It has been my privilege to serve with many devout and committed clergy from all traditions in the Navy.  Some of our very best have been Roman Catholic.

One, was in Beirut the day the barracks were destroyed in 1983 and help dig out the Marines with his bare hands as he anointed them.

Today, Navy clergy are everywhere our forces are sent -  I just packed off a buddy to Haiti last week with an open-ended return date.

There are good and bad in all vocations.  I appreciate the Rev's post very much and hope my comments will be taken in the spirit they are given.

Now - let's talk some smack about the playoffs!

Go Warriors!

very informative posts from the rev and lyco80...you learn something new here everyday on the LLPP. lyco80 thank you again for your service, especially during these very trying times.

I was thinking exactly the same thing Gro.  When it comes down to it, the Jersey Shore is really just the realworld except instead of having 7 people with different backgrounds, it has 7 people with the same background.

I missed the last episode and renunion last night though.

PGT (it's bizarro week given the torrential downpour of rain in Socal) has been talking smack with one of his best buds (who also is the Godfather of my first kid) re the Saints-Vikes.

PGT has been an on-off Vikes fans since back when guys like Doleman, Millard and others were whooping azz on the gridiron back in the mid-late 80's.   Back when PGT was getting up to speed on football the Vikes were kind of like the Red Sox in helmets (at least until 2004).  PGT did "separate" from the Vikes after the Korey Stringer, Whizzator, Tice SB tix scalping, "love boat" and other scandals rocked the team around the turn of this new century however.

That said PGT's bud is a born and bred Nola boy.  He love dem Saint.  Althougth PGT would enjoy seeing the Vike back in the SB there's a part of him that just can't root against NOLA.  That city would GO OFF moreso than any Mardi Gras or Jazz Fest in Hizztory if the Saint a) made it to and b) WON the SB.

PGT thinks the Vikes could pull it off but PGT envisions a timely Favre INT being the back-breaker (as it was against the NYG in the NFC title game back in 2007/8).  IMO that's what really beat the Pats - if the Pack ended up in the SB the Pats go 19-0 guaranteed.

There was a good game btw the Vike and the Steelers early on in the season that was a great defensive game (TP wasn't injured yet) that turned when Favre forced a throw and it was a pick 6 which effectively won the game.  PGT sees a similiar deal going down in the bayou on Sunday.

Who dat?  We dat.  Favre dat?  Pick 6 bruh.  Pick 6.
