So I se RIT is in the d1 mens frozen four.  My understanding was that d3 schools could no longer have d1 sports unless they already had them?  Since RIT only went d1 four years ago, I assumed mens hockey was different since the NCAA wanted more teams?

RIT hockey has only 1 New York player on the roster.

I think the rules are different for Hockey because there are only a limited number of Colleges/Universities that have teams.

Yea thats what I heard.  The NCAA wanted more d1 hockey teams so they made an exception.  Id love to see Ithaca get a d1 hockey team.

What happened was (dlip believes he could be wrong) as a result of RIT being a D3 school they are unable to give scholarships for the hockey program. RPI was also in jeopardy of falling into this category but since they have had the program for so long they, Clarkson, and SLU are able to keep providing full rides for their Hockey players. dlip believes it was sometime after 2002/3/4 that this rule was made. Hence RIT only being D1 for 5 years they, along with any other D3 school that goes D1 in hockey is unable to give scholarships from that year on. RIT's run is incredibly impressive on all levels! The school most likely gives some type of "preferential aide" to it's hockey players (like Union) but that does not come ****ing close to equaling a full ride by any means. Also the fact that RIT is an incredible academic institution proves just how excellent these student athletes are. dlip is definitely pulling for them! This is a good hockey team with confidence and poise. Their run just may not be quite over yet. Great story!!!

Too many Canadians.

Go Eagles!

Never liked RIT, stems from them beating our asses in lacrosse back in the day, and when Union and RIT used to go head to head in DIII hockey in the 80's when I was there.

That being said, now that Michigan and Union are out, I like RIT a little more, but my wifes family all went to BC so...I'm rooting for RIT.

I am probably in the minority, but I wish Union had stayed DIII in hockey, kind of like I wish Hobart would have stayed DIII in lax. There was something cool about Union beating RPI back in the era of Puppa, Joe Carter, Oates, etc., and nothing beat the Hamilton-Union games for intensity (and the traditional "throwing of the oranges" at the opposing goalie after the home team scored the first goal. I just hope the Dutchman still play the Hartford Whalers Theme song between periods.

Here is a nice feel good story about the Kean football team.  This seems like a great program.

Well, I'll be tied down in the middle of a lap dance!

I look out the car window and there is a cardinal UNION sweatshirt on a guy - about the same time the driver says, "And that's Union College."

On a vacation from the OC. So what am I doing in Neskiyuna then? In the rain!

Couple things:

-One of the best moments in Union Hockey history was Gill Egan's triple OT goal in 84 over RIT at RIT. dlip idolized Egan and wore #11 throughout his hockey career as a tribute.

-It totally sucks ass that the Dutch don't play the Hartford Whalers theme song anymore. Why on earth they stopped that dlip does not ****in know.

-1985 D3 Union vs D1 RPI at Achilles Rink, game tied at 2 with 31 seconds left, face off in the neutral zone. ****in RPI ties the game and goes on to win in OT. Broke dlip's heart and truly taught dlip how to HATE the Engineers. By the way, RPI went on that year to defeat Providence and win the D1 National Championship.

-Nothing parallels Union fans ****ing pelting Hamilton's Guy Hebert (eventual Mighty Ducks star netminder) with Oranges during their annual match-ups. ****ing intense rivalry that got the blood boiling and the Union students throwing out obscenities like Andrew Dice K on stage. Those were the days.

dlip grew up going to almost every single home football and hockey game throughout the 80's and 90's with his old man. It sounds weird but dlip loves this ****ing school more than he can describe. Being a local kid he wanted desperately to play hockey for the U but it just wasn't in the cards.

And now a bit of humor to brighten your day:

An 87 year old, fresh from his morning jog, meets his friend who is 80 in the park.  The 80 yr old remarks about his older friend's fitness and asks how does he keep in such good shape.  The 87 year old says he owes it all to Italian bread and how it gives him energy and stamina with the ladies.

The 80 year old heads for the nearest bakery and asks the woman behind the counter if they have any Italian bread.  She points to a shelf whereupon the man asks for five loaves.  "Five loaves," the woman exclaims, "by the time you get to the fifth loaf it will be hard."

Smiling, the 80 year old remarks, "It seems as if everyone knows about the power of this Italian bread but me."

Ah, behold the power of Italian bread!
