Man, very sad day........

Even though he lived a long, healthy life, the death of the greatest coach of boys/men hurts terribly...he had such a huge impact on so many.

God Bless John Wooden.

If there's basketball in Heaven, Coach Wooden is likely assembling an awesome team. RIP John Wooden.

Pep had a friend who argued a few years back that (legendary) AU Football Coach Alex Yunevich and (Wizard of Westwood) Coach John Wooden were roommates at Purdue. Pep wanted to settle the argument, so Pep wrote Coach Wooden a letter, also sending along AU Football Coach Dave Murray's copy of They Call Me Coach to be autographed. Murray has said the book is a real inspiration to him. Within a week, I had the book back from California, autographed, together with with a copy of Wooden's "pyramid of success" and a hand-written note on my original letter clarifying that he and Yuni were never roommates, but had classes together. Wooden had a few kind words to say about Yuni and said that he had followed Alex's coaching career at Alfred.

dlip agrees wholeheartedly. The class shown by all involved here seems unprecedented to dlip. First, dlip takes his hat off to Galarraga. What composure and maturity by the young man! He deserves all the credit he is receiving. On top of this he pitched a ****ing amazing game! Hats off to Joyce as well. Obviously he botched the call completely but he has maned up 100% and showed a lot of heart in his remorse for the mistake. Same respect to Leyland, Cabrera, and the rest of the team.

As usual dlip has an issue with Selig. dlip feels he should have made the exception here. If we take a look at baseball history this type of situation will not happen everyday or even every year. With all in agreement regarding the mistake why not fix it?

By the way, anyone making ****ing death threats to Joyce and his family should be dealt with in as harsh a manner as the law allows if they are caught. ****ing tools need to get a life and a grip on reality.

KS disagrees, KS thinks Selig made the correct call in not overturning the umpires call.  This would have caused every close call at the end of a game to be referred to the commissioners office.

Did the Tigers file a protest?  KS never heard if they did or didn't but if they did not file a protest then the commissioner really can't overturn the call according to the rules of baseball.

You can't reverse a call.  Not under the current way of things anyway, until there is replay.  But I think the pitcher should have gotten an asterisk for a perfect game with 28 batters, the 27th batter awarded a hit, the 28th batter recorded an AB, but the pitcher still recognized for a perfect game.  It was the last out of the game, it didn't affect the outcome of the game, so the pitcher should atleast be recognized as far as i'm concerned.  Either way, it is more memorable than the other 2 perfect games pitched this year, and will be remembered for many more years to come.

A valid point for sure. dlip sees how overturning a call could cause problems. Where would the line be and how would that line be inforced? Just heard Galaragga was given a 2010 convertable Vette for his game, probably helps the situation a bit :) Good for him.

Mr. Ypsi

I think the 'setting a precedent' argument is a red herring.  This situation was 100% unique.  What are the odds of ever again having the 27th out of a perfect game be botched, EVERYONE(including the ump) agreeing it was botched, AND the pitcher then immediately getting the 28th out (so NOTHING is changed in the game, except the 28th victim would raise his BA by .001 ;))?

Bud Light could have done the right thing, and tailored the decision so narrowly that precedent becomes a non-issue.

On the other hand, people are gonna remember Galarraga far longer than Dallas Braden! :D

I agree.  This was a totally unique situation, that should have been handled better...but Selig, as usual, was spineless and once again showed why he is one of the worst commissioners in the history of organized sports.  MLB has overturned/changed plenty of things after the fact...George Brett's pine tar HR at bat, Fay Vincent reviewing and overturning over 50 previously desgintated no-hitters, and now reviewing HR's with the use of replay (which seems to take seconds unlike the NFL version of review).

I guess my feelings are better to get it right, then hide behind authority and do nothing to right a clear wrong...

TGP --- I think the Lakers had something to do with the heat getting turned up in LA LA land last night.  Sheesh.... I was hoping they'd give Kobe a shot to win it at the end.   Whats the over/under on flagrant fouls on Boston in game 2, as they try to intimidate Gasol and the boys?

Los Lakers were hot (like pee) on Friday for sure but the C's fought back and TCB last night.  While Ray "He Got Game" certainly put on a show, Rondo remains THE star for the C's.  Still, for the C's to have a shot to win this series they need to come up with some inside game.  Gasol has been money and the C's have generally been dominated by the Lakers' bigs to date.  This one's going seven for sure.

RIP to Coach Wooden.  TGP's old man attended UCLA for a year (67-68) back in the Wizard of Westwood's hey day.  TGP met the Wiz himself at breakfast on the floor of Pauley back in either 2001 or 2002.  TGP has a photo of him with the Coach from that day stashed in a safe place.

I was wondering about the 12/14/16 team conference thing.  It seems to me that the only benefit of those large conferences is that the championship game makes a lot of money?

What happens when the NCAA wakes up and sets up a playoff system where 7 league champions (and an at large) get a playoff bid.  Wouldn't that system benefit the smaller conferences (if there are any but I was thinking Texas in a new big 8)?

well the big10 isnt even planning a playoff still although the coaches want it. Problem for Texas is right now they are the big fish in the pond in the big 12. Political pressure is being put on big time to take aTm/Tx Tech/Baylor along w/ them wherever they go. Hence why the big10 has backed off Texas. The last 2 are not very strong academically and are not a good fit in the big10. Right now Texas calls most of the shots in the big12 and joining the pac 10 w/ usc et al texas wont be the sole big fish anymore. big 10 presidents and several other conferences reminded people in a presser last week that they are the ones who vote on any changes to the bcs/playoff and there are no plans to change it. i.e. a bird in hand is worth 2 in the bush, they see no reason to change things for a unknown when they have a cash cow right now.

made pbr think would combining smaller schools conferences have any benefits...i.e. playoff spots/money saving op's/etc... i.e. see the mac/njac combine as well as E8/LL combination...what if any plus/minus would there be?

EDIT: should note ju the biggest benefit of the conferences is bringing in more research grant money....100s of millions of dollars, pooling resources equipment/staff and almost limitless labor pool to draw on from undergrads/grad students is a huge huge plus and probably the biggest driver of this...$$$ rules the roost
