For Union Dutchmen fans looking for the Union radio broadcast today, you again have several options:

Radio:

For the 7th year, Union games will be broadcast on 1160AM WABY-Mechanicville, NY.  I will be joined in the Press Box by Carm Audino and Tom Santa Barbara to call the action.   Pregame shows will generally begin ten minutes before the kickoff.

Internet:

WABY no longer provides a web feed.  However, we continue to have two options for listeners.  First, you can listen on Teamline by surfing to http://teamline.cc -- Union is team code 1160.  We also have unlimited listener ability for users of Windows Media Player or other .wma stream applications by pointing your Windows Media Player to http://frankrossi.serverroom.us/frankrossi or mms://frankrossi.serverroom.us/frankrossi.  These feeds will not include commercials, so expect some periods of dead air between quarters -- this is normal.

Mobile:

We recommend iPhone and Android phone users to download the WunderRadio App for each phone.  While there is a cost, it is one of the best Internet radio apps out there.  Choose to search for a webstream and enter "mms://frankrossi.serverroom.us/frankrossi" in the search box.  Blackberry and Windows Mobile phone users should search for apps that allow the playing of .wma streams -- point your app to the same address.

As a tribute to the ninth anniversary of the events of 9/11/01 tomorrow, we will be playing this clip during halftime of our college football broadcast of Union at Ithaca on 1160AM WABY-Mechanicville, NY. In case you can't join us, I wanted to post this clip since it is very much worth the listen -- WE WILL NEVER FORGET.

TGP, did you get the e-mail to buy Hobart athletic gear?  Rev lusts after the Gore-Tex jacket.  Rev wonders if he can get "AT" for Athletic Trainer since Rev didn't have a number?

Those jackets are pretty sweet but probably going to pass given the $200+ price tag.

On a more serious note, although it's exciting to kickoff another football season, it is bittersweet as we remember the events of 9/11/01.  That day we lost three Statesmen, Scott Rohner '01Michael Simon '83 and my former teammate Andrew Glokin '93.

I called the Hobart adminstration a few weeks back to request and they responded they would ring the Statesmen bell in their honor prior to today's game.

God bless these Statesmen and America.

Utah, almost looks like the screen is 'pulsing'.  Are you seeing the same thing?

Well a tough day for the Dutchman over at Butterfield Stadium. For now, dlip congratulates the Bombers on their victory and will sleep on his thoughts regarding Union's performance. dlip feels both teams played hard today and for that dlip tips his hat to the players.

Congrats to Hobart, RPI, and WPI for their victories today. dlip was disappointed to see MMA lose a close one against rival Coast Guard. The LL moves on into week #3.

I wouldn't have wanted to have been on the busride home from Endicott today.  That game just looked bizarre (I think there was all of one turnover all game for the teams).  With Union's struggles, it looks like Hobart may have just become a clearcut favorite in the LL -- and with Rochester holding Case Western Reserve to just 14 points, the Yellowjackets are validating our original thought that they will be in the hunt if they can solidify a new receiving core.

The Liberty League is wide open this year, folks, with a slight leaning now toward the Statesmen.  This could be a wild season once again, even with one less team.

Counterpints:
-All the union road loss means is that they probably aren't coming out of the east this year.  LL's still theirs to be had.
-I thought you guys might be overrating CWRU.  They beat up a bunch of patsies the past few years, and it's shown come playoff time despite having an Elite QB.  Now Whalen's gone, so I thought that game was a push going in.  Let's see what they do in the courage bowl and other OOC game.
-We know that WPI, SLU and MMA are going to be WEAK this year at the bottom.
-I don't have anything to say about RPI.  Unless you're Hartwick, there's no excuse to even win close against a non-Curry NEFC team or ECFC team.  Could mean trouble for them and I thought they'd be a player this year.
-My Bart hasb't really proven anything on O.  They really didn't have to, it was taken off their shoulders, so we'll have to see what they do when they're forced to play 3-4 quarters of football.  Muratori will be a force this year though.  What I learned is that the D, including the front four that I was worried about, is going to be better than last year and probably as good as any since 2000.  I also learned that I'm going to love FR Steven Webb and Devin Worthington almost as much as I love Saranac beer.

Just some thoughts to chew on.

Regarding Union and Hobart -- Maybe Dickinson isn't Ithaca, but at the same time, Dickinson is normally a strong team and Hobart manhandled the team.  You don't have to hang 78 points on a team to convince me of your strength.  The bigger problem for Union is that going into their first league game of the season (against Rochester, no less), the Dutchmen offense will have possessed the ball for 21 minutes, 59 seconds total.  With a youthful O-line and a quarterback that seemed to have trouble checking down at times even with 4- and 5-receiver sets, they need a lot more on-field experience than this.  The scoreboard didn't tell a great amount of the real story today -- Union could've easily been down by three touchdowns at halftime, but Ithaca couldn't finish some early drives and special teams caused some issues for them.

I'm not saying Hobart will definitely win -- nor am I saying Union with lose the LL.  I'm just looking at momentum and probable trends we may see over the next few weeks.  When we looked at Rochester last weekend, we looked at the fact that Rochester hasn't even been close in games vs. CWR over the last few seasons.  Tonight's play by Rochester may not have been spectacular on offense, but their DEFENSE did something I haven't seen them do in a while -- hold a normally decent offensive team to less than 20 points.  That's an important thing for Rochester's success this year.

There are many games to be played, but today's results just make things more muddled toward the top of the charts of the LL.  We'll discuss this more tomorrow night on ITH, for sure.

The Rev is 13 hours ahead of Eastern Time, so Rev could only stay up for the first half.  When the Rev konked out, it was 10-0 Bart.  Not a bad way to hit the sack.

Saw final score was 38-7.  Very respectable showing.  If the Rev recalls correctly, Dickinson is rarely a sure-win.

Thoughts from yesterdays loss at Butterfield stadium:

Ithaca

The Bombers really played quite well on both sides of the football. Their D really kept Connelly, even with time in the pocket, frozen and indecisive. Ithaca tackled well and took the run option completely out of Union's repertoire. Their defensive unit played very cohesively and made almost all of the necessary adjustments needed. Especially toward the end of the game when they adjusted to Union's pass success.

On the offensive side of the ball Zappia played  much better than dlip anticipated. His passing was not as accurate as it could/should be but he made up for this with his excellent decision making and ability to run the football and play fake. dlip was very impressed with Vossler at the WR position as well as Jamison's return ability. The only area dlip feels IC needs work in is at RB. The backs were not very explosive and aggressive out of the backfield. If IC can start running the ball effectively watch out.

Overall very impressed with IC and dlip congratulates them on their victory yesterday. 9-1 or 9-2 is very possible for this team in 2010.

Union

dlip felt Union really had a poor game on the defensive side of the ball. The secondary played poorly and "tight" coverage was really non-existent. What perplexed dlip the most was with the 4-4 how there was constantly LB's in deep one on one coverage against IC WR's or the athletic TE. IC should have exploited this more because time and again either a coverage was completely blown or a Union LB's  were 25 yards off scrimmage in deep coverage against much taller and faster receivers. The D did do a decent job against the run but bit early and often on play fakes.

As far as penetration goes the d-line made progress throughout the game and did throw Zappia off a few times. The Union D played very hard and dlip credits all of them for their effort, the execution just was not there yesterday but dlip knows it will improve as 2010 continues.

On the offensive side of the football Union was very inconsistent and was unable, for the most part, to create any flow and real identity. The running game was completely non-existent. dlip (having so much to learn about the game of football) really got an idea of just how important a role the O-line plays. The line was simply unable to create holes for Chris and as a result Union instantly became one dimensional.

Regarding the passing game dlip saw a very mixed bag. First dlip wants to give credit to the O-line for their pass protection. Connelly started off very slow looking very confused at times. Yet as the game progressed and U went into some 5 receiver sets he made some excellent throws and decisions with the football. Throughout the game though he missed many wide open receivers and needs to check off more consistently if the offense is to reach their potential. The receivers were really quite solid throughout running some strong patterns and showing some excellent hands. J Gallo is simply nasty and his brother is getting better each game.

These are just some of dlip's observations and are not meant in anyway to attack or put down any individual players. dlip believes in this team and values all of the players hard work and the talent they bring to the field day in and day out. As of now dlip must concur with Rossi that Bart is the LL favorite. Yet we may be looking back at this game saying that it is what really woke Union up and got them on the right track this year. Great comeback fellas and great heart never giving up yesterday. dlip is proud of this team and believes there will be some high points this season. dlip is truly proud to be a U fan!
