TGP posted this earlier on my blog

I have to view this [Hobart vs. MMA] game from two perspectives:

Glass half full - Hobart truly dominated in the first half and once again finished with over 400 yards of total offense. Vella connected on 18 of 33 attempts passing for 305 yards, finding Muratori for three of his four TD throws. The defense forced two fumbles and a safety and Devin Worthington (2.5 sacks) and Reggie Robinson (10 tackles) were down right unstoppable.

Glass half empty - Vella once again threw some questionable passes that lead to easy interceptions for MMA which allowed them to stay in the game. The Statesmen continued to play sloppy football, getting flagged 10 times for 83 yards. The team was particularly inept in the third quarter (when the two interceptions occurred) losing the time of possession battle by a 11:12 to 3:48 margin.

Hobart posted a short but interesting interview of Coach Cragg following the game which can be accessed here:

Bottom line

With only three weeks of the regular season to go Hobart is already on the brink of NCAA elimination. Saint Lawrence (4-4, 4-0) continues to sweep it's Liberty League opposition, most recently taking down RPI (3-3, 1-2) 14-3 on Saturday. Unless the Saints lose their FINAL TWO GAMES (against 1-5 Rochester and 3-4 WPI), Hobart is out of the NCAA conversation for the second consecutive season.

That said, I am guessing Hobart will continue to play out their schedule with the goal of finishing 7-2. While it's not certain whether the team will put in a bid for a possible ECAC game based on last year's experience, the only hope for the Statesmen at this point is keeping winning and for SLU to somehow shoot themselves in the foot down the home stretch.

Speaking of the Larries - they apparently have the 7th strongest schedule in DIII....

I've been focused on Union's inability to win close LL games, and their now evaporated chances to win the title this year (insert Jim Mora's "Playoffs? Are you kidding me?!" speech here). But when I looked at their record this morning, I realized that I had lost sight of the bigger picture, Union's streak of winning seasons.  Union is 2-4, with remaining games against RPI (toss up, depending on which RPI teams shows up for The Shoes), Merchant Marine (normally a UColl win, but this year somewhat in doubt), and Springfield (Union will clearly be underdogs).

But I don't think this is a bad team, just a confusing one. They don't get blown out (Salisbury thumping notwithstanding), and they don't blow people out. They just play close games. I could see them winning the remaining three and ending up 5-4, and just as easily losing all three and going 2-7, neither would surprise me. But a 2-7 record with the team they had returning, just doesn't cut it in Shocktown.

On another note, when did they stop calling Merchant Marine Kings Point?

Doid,
Look at '09 scores as well....Union has consistently played up or down to their opponent.  Not good......

This thing actually makes the E8 look like a stronger conference.

I love how both MUC and UWW are below 100. They must not be able to WAIT for that championship game.

That's more a flaw in the SoS formula than a knock on MUC (now UMU) or UWW.  The OAC (UMU) has only one non-con game per team, so all the teams inevitably end up close to .500.  UWW has a terrible time finding d3 teams who will play them - their entire non-con schedule is two non-d3 teams and Adrian, a non-region team.

SoS counts ONLY in-region d3 opponents; UMU and UWW are therefore in virtually closed-set situations, and, by definition, will be near .500 (i.e., given the number of d3 schools, near or below 100th).

How does one even talk sh!t about Union right now  They just lost by 31- to the Salisbury Steaks.  They are pathetic and I really just feel bad for them.  So trash all you want, Union doesn't SUCK, they are just plain pathetic and embarrassing.

Lew some thoughts:

-great W vs Endicott, that six points is definitely something to hang ones hat on  ;)

-king has publicly stated on local radio his recent struggles recruiting (excuse), this proves he even knows his team sucks  :P

-honestly a great W vs Alfred only to follow up with a pitiful effort against a SLU team that Union played much better using a QB who hasn't thrown a pass in three years and only twice in high school four years ago  ;D

-problem with recruiting? Maybe, but only as a result of the girl to guy ratio being 150:1. King may be able to promise playing time but not female relationships the rumor is RPi has more blow up dolls per square foot than any college in the nation

Question: How can a state of the art division 3 facility not help recruiting?

Answer: Because no one wants to play in front of tumbleweeds and a piss poor pep band that arrives 2 hours before game time to play for more people than actually stay to watch the game.

-at least Union has made a Stagg bowl, actually two...and yes they were a long time ago but so was RPI's lone semi-final run

-red just sucks... ;)
