Man I love the East!  Over in our land (the OAC board) it's so boring.  Other OAC teams fans come on the board to honk their team's chance against Mount/in the league...and we as Mount fans basically laugh them off of the board.  It's boring....really.   ;D

Just an unrelated story/question....

My son (RB) and his best bud (QB)are pretty good high school football players just finishing their freshman years.  If they grow/get better, they will both be two or three years starters in high school.  The QB is also a reallly good LAX player, and will start as a freshman this year.  I was talking to his dad over the weekend, and we were saying how cool it would be if these two could stick together in college (they have been best friends since 1st grade).

We both don't have any wild notions that they will be good enough to play D-I football, so we were talking about all the D-III alternatives.  I mentioned that there are teams (mainly in the East) that are D-I in LAX, but D-III in football, and that could be an option for his son.  I proceeded to say that possibly my son could tag along as a "throw in" deal.   :)  I then mentioned Hobart as one of those schools.  Great school....not that far from us....near wine country....perfect!  I then went on their website and found out that it's $52K a year to go there??  HOLY CRAP!

State school (Kent)was good enough for me......it will be good enough for Jr.  ;D

TGP....does Hobart offer D-I athletic scholarships for LAX, and do kids earning them generally play football or is that a no-no?

Sknunks, some of these schools will give you 40K in scholorships before you even fill out a financial aid form.  If you are your average American two income family making 40K-80K a year, these northeastern schools will give you aid right off the bat.

.....and the only committment you have by accepting that money is to pay it back 80% of it when you are done with school! (the other 20% should be taken care of by some type of scholarship funding)

Seriously, the cost of some of these schools is getting out of hand.  Unless your son is good at football or really smart (academic scholarships) then it wouldn't hurt to weigh the alternatives.

"Good at football"....hmmm...it's all relative I guess.  We will see how much he grows and improves in the next few years.  "Really smart".....he will/is an A/B student that will never be in the top 10 of his class or anything like that.

Thanks for the responses....

dlip has never once, seen Pat take exception to anything he has said or acknowledge another's point of view when it differs from his.

You should really read around the board more, then. There's more to D3boards.com than a couple of East Region football topics.

I think Pat may have an issue with labia jokes on his website.  I'm always up for a good female reproductive organ joke, but I can see where he is coming from on this one.

Thanks -- good to see, this was fairly clear to at least one other person.

Ok...now we are talking.   ;)

If the other kid is dead set on D1 lax, than Hobart could be an option.  But it is worth checking out some D3 lax schools as well if he wants to play both.  There was a kid that played lax at St. Lawrence for a couple of years and then transferred to Duke and started on their national championship team, so it is a high caliber game at some of these schools.  Playing a D1 sport is great, but it makes it really hard to play two sports (especially if there is scholarship money for one of the sports).

Schools like Salisbury, Gettysburg, Washington and Lee, St. Lawrence (this year) can give competitive football along with national caliber lax on the d3 level.  Plus, a lot of these schools are great academically.

Not sure if its still the case but back in the day on a visit to W&L TGP saw more hot gals per capita than any eastern school he had visited.

Just sayin.....

"By the way...and this could be ridiculously premature...but if/when SLU wins one (or both) of their last two games, and SLU makes it into the NCAA's...shouldn't Mark Raymond get some serious consideration for National Coach of the Year?  For a school that hasn't made any type of playoff game since 1982, is coming off of 3-7 and 1-9 seasons, lost probably their greatest defensive player of all time the year before, got beat in their first 3 games, and had to hire this years Head Coach late because of the previous coaches late departure...winning the LL seems nothing short of a freaking miracle..."

I have thought the same but usually these COY awards go to guys who are leading high profile teams deep into the playoffs, not those that make turnarounds like Raymond has with SLU this season.  Detractors could easily say that winning 2 or 3 more games than last year is not worthy, although the first playoff appearance since the 80s might get him some votes.

Kind of makes you wonder why you went to SLU right?

I had similar thoughts when I enrolled at USC for grad school.  If I had known about Pac10 girls when I was 17 or 18 it's likely I would have moved to Los Angeles right then and there instead of waiting a couple of years after graduating from Hobart....

Great point...just asking the question...I mean, who did the better job?  Mark Raymond stunning the world and getting St. Lawrence to the NCAA's...or Larry Kehres not losing his 7th game in 12 years???

Not so much with ours. We name coaches that fit that description fairly regularly for our regional coach of the year.

http://www.d3football.com/awards/all-region/2006/index Rich Lackner from the South
http://www.d3football.com/awards/all-region/2007/index Mike Hallett from the North
http://www.d3football.com/awards/all-region/2008/index Todd Mooney from the South
http://www.d3football.com/awards/all-region/2009/index Probably not one that qualifies from last year, though we did name E.J. Mills the East coach of the year and his team obviously didn't win a playoff game

Didn't The Rev. rate the Hobart women a few years ago.  As I recall, it wasn't very high.
