The Rev Report

In a ridiculous turn of events, The Rev may become the football coach at Korea Maritime University.
The team is one of Korea's best, but that is not saying much. The nation has a 30 team conference and 3 divisions.
KMU does not support the team. The school give about $700 to the club. The boys have some of the roughest looking helmets I've ever seen, and their playing surface is a clay/dirt playground. The Rev will have to take some pictures and show you guys some of this stuff. Unbelievable.

Anyway, The Rev went to the team just looking to see if there was any way I could help out. Now that The Rev offered help, the boys are talking head coach. I was thinking more in lines of equipment manager or something.

Anyway, the freshmen had their first experience of their whole lives touching a football. I think coaching college football in Korea might be a lot like coaching Pop Warner with big kids.

Anyone have any advice? The Rev may have stepped in it this time.

It is now March 14, 2011.  Coach King stepped down 49 days ago, and RPI still does not have a head football coach.

dlip has been out of the loop. Are there any serious candidates or is the athletic admin sitting on their hands? dlip isn't quite sure how this porcess works.

Well, as of ~Feb 12th, the 'timeline' given was a selection of candidates by the committee within about 2 weeks, then the finalists would be submitted to the President with an official announcement in the first 2 weeks of March.  I guess 'technically' speaking, today is March 14th, so today would mark the last day of the second week of March.

I heard that all potential recruits have committed to WPI and Union already so we might as well wait until August at this point.

RPI will still be able to take the kids who could not get in to Union though....

+k the beauty of U89 always shines bright!!

Good luck Rev.  For some reason, the entire thought of this makes me giggle like a school girl.

Just pay this damn screen door when he rolls to victory in the NCAA pool.

Wow, new job, fiance', baby on the way and a HC?  You're certainly piling it on out there Rev.

Coaching can be rewarding but it's a lot of hard work too.  I am volunteering as the HC for my 4 yr son's soccer league and find myself exhausted after practices and games.  At least you'll have older kids that should listen to you.

Why not drop Coach Cragg or DeWall a line?  There are a lot of resources out there to teach FB - I would just focus on the basics.

You never know - maybe KMU can become an affliate of the LL?  We already have one Maritime school involved ;)

If you can get them to block, JT has two words, triple option.  Tell them the best military schools in the US run it, and you guys will be the best in Korea.

Pat Coleman

Wow -- if you could teach them to run the triple option competently you would crush people.

Thanks for the suggestion to run the Triple Option. I will do the necessary research. I seem to recall my high school JV team running something similar. Maybe the years have addled my brain.

The Rev plans to focus on fundamentals. I think I may even have to go back and get them doing simple drills like we learned in Pop Warner. The boys are raw. Great kids though. Really enthusiastic, and they know that in comparison to the other teams in the division, they are good. So at least there's no negative attitude to have to turn around.

Any ideas for fundraisers? These boys have nothing. I was thinking of the basics here, too. They don't have a program, so there's a possible source of advertising revenue. They need some advertising banners around the field. I was thinking about a team website. Anything to help these guys bring in some cash. But The Rev is not much of a businessman, so I am just grasping at the obvious straws at this point.

TROY — Offering insight on topics ranging from the current nuclear crisis in Japan to the status of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's various improvement projects, RPI President Shirley Ann Jackson addressed members of the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce Tuesday afternoon as part of the chamber's Lunch with a Leader series.

She did NOT offer any insight into the RPI football coaching situation, however.

Every day that goes by, this is getting more embarrassing.

Hey Rev, advertising is key...

It shouldn't be a surprise based on what I reported last week.  An update is that there had not been an actual offer made as of that report.  So even if the offer was made a day after my post, the potential coach would get a week to mull their own decision.  At least some interviews have been held -- from what is being suggested to me by multiple sources, there has been at least some leaning toward I-AA (FCS) experience in the process (that does not mean that a D3 candidate would be completely ignored).  However, we need to remember that just because an offer is made does not guarantee that a coach would take the offer, especially if they are currently at a I-AA school (different people have different views about whether a move to the Head Coach position at certain D3 schools is an upward, lateral or even downward move in some situations).

I think we're looking still at another week before any announcement is made -- I'd be shocked if we went beyond Friday, March 25th.  If that were to happen, it might be an indication that the initial pick chose to pass on the job.

Fundamentals, Fundamentals, Fundamentals.  Block, Tackle, Run and simple Passing Scheme.

Keep it VERY simple and do a few things WELL rather than try to be complex and not be able to do anything average.

I've used this guy's stuff before for pre HS coaching.  He's got DVD's too.

A website would be good.  Use a wordpress blog with a football template.  You might be able to google a nice free template.

Does the Korean culture like to gamble, play the lotto, or scratch off?

If so, how about 50/50 raffle.  Team keeps 50%, 1st place gets 25%, 2nd gets 15%, and 3rd gets 10%.

Or maybe you could find a printer that will do a scratch off with three or four winners and the team keeping 50%-60%.  Maybe even put a team pic on the scratch off.

For business owners maybe a shoulder patch on the unis.

I agree.  The Triple option is probably not the best offense to put in.  This offense is only good for guys that have been throwing around footballs their whole lives.  A spread might actuall be a good offense to put in for beginners because they don't know anything different.  Spread blocking is sometimes just stepping with one foot and blocking the first guy that comes back to you.
