If I am not mistaken, the guy who gave the ball to Jeter was compensated with use of a luxury box, plus a multitude of other signed items.

I heard it on ESPN, if that can be considered reliable.

I am glad that the fella' offered the ball back. It is good to see that everyone is not greedy.

maxpower

He got four luxury tickets (not sure if it was a box or field-side) for every game of this season including playoffs. If you're a real fan, that's a nice haul.

The Yankees gave him the stuff after he returned the ball, he did not negotiate for it.

Compensated with the use of a luxury box??!!  How is that at all tangible? Sure a nice gesture, but that last I checked Yankees suites don't pay mortgage payments or electric bills.

Greedy?  Come on now.... Jeter's 2011 Salary is: $14,729,365..... What if you wanted him to do something nice for you?....do you think he would show up for free?  Haven't you seen the Bronx Tale?

I would have given him the ball, but he would have had to throw me more than an autographed bat and some home game suites.

I would have wanted a signed document saying "My home run in the '96 ALCS shouldn't count; it was fan interference."

So, those $100,000 in student loans not enough for you?  Now, Derek Jeter's favorite "Saint" is facing the wrath of the IRS in another edition of "Sad But True"...

Jeter should do the right thing and leave a brown paper bag with the tax cash for Lopez on his front door step. Gotta love our greedy Government.  >:(
It ain't over till it's over, and when you get to the fork in the road, take it.

Ha! It gets even better!....
I love the line "Jeter should do the right thing" ....get real, this kid was out of Jeters throughts the second he had the ball in his hands.  He didn't do anything besides take a couple pictures and sign a few items, the yankees organization took care of the other stuff.

It is too late to take the ball back and negotiate the correct way?

It's corny, I know, and I'm in the minority (sadly) but I'm glad there are still people like this, not always out for the instant payday.

My response to this is, if you found a lottery ticket winner for $250,000 on the ground, would you return it?  Granted, I think the kid got some pretty cool stuff, but he coulda probably negotiated a little more.  I woulda sought out some cash personally.

I didn't mention my own scruples, just that it was refreshing to see that others have them  :P.  I don't think he should be made fun of for doing the "moral" thing.

pg04

i.e. I'm not sure I'd be a good enough person to return such a ticket, especially in my current financial situation!

Doid23

I'm a huge Yankee fan, and love Derek Jeter. It seems like Lopez is comfortable with his decision, and that's all that matters.

But what exactly is the "right" thing? Is it Christian Lopez giving back the ball? I can certainly see that argument. Or is the right thing to do for the multi-multi millionaire Derek Jeter to pay the man fair market value for the ball? You know, the guy who is marrying a movie star and just finished a 31,000 sq foot home in Tampa? I could make a more compelling argument that that is the right thing to do. Fundamentally, that's what this is about, asking Christian Lopez to give up $250K or Derek Jeter. Heck, if Jeter didn't want to pay, he could keep the bat or batting helmet as a momento.

Personally, I would view that ball as my childrens college tuition. Looking at it through that lens, the right thing to do would certainly be to keep it. Of course, it's easy to say that from behind my laptop, while not caught up in the moment, with the Yankees ushering me into a suite, down to the locker room, etc. A lot tougher to say no then. But in the end, I like my kids more than Derek Jeter.

PBR...

go ahead and say it Reg....What is this amateur hour?

So, Reg, if we can secure Christian Lopez on "In the HuddLLe" this season as a guest, can we have you join as the contrarian view?  It could be entertaining...
