He's been flying under the radar here, but Andrew Lovell has been writing some excellent "Around the East" columns this season.  This week's is no different.  I encourage you all to read his material:

http://www.d3football.com/columns/around-the-region/east/2011/studying-the-football-brain

Agreed. He's put together some solid journalism.

That's how we teach it in the Park school!

Pep has an AAS degree in journalism from SUNY Morrisville, where he enrolled to learn the art of sportswriting and was pleased to have a professor who shared his love for sports, albeit as an avid Michigan State Spartan and Detroit Tiger fan.

Pep also applauds Andrew Lovell's work. Pep particularly appreciated the "You all didn't  forget about Alfred...did you?" line. Of course, Pep would much rather everyone did just forget about Alfred.  ;)

On Saxon Warriors!

Andy's doing a good job so far filling these big shoes. Looking forward to the rest of the year.

Today's game between Union College and Ithaca college has many small storylines: -can Union's Denfense stop anything in the air...dlip really means anything? -Can Union run the ball? -Will IC drive Connelly crazy with coverage and create turnovers? Will Ithaca run the ball effectively enough to give Neumann/Handel enough space to make plays without turnovers? The list goes on...yet after a night of some thinking this is what dlip thinks will happen this afternoon.

Union's offense will be entirely based on the success of the run. If IC stuffs Union's young rushing attack and makes Union become one dimensional the Dutch are in trouble. dlip has a feeling this may be the case and there may just be too much pressure on Drew Connelly to make things happen. This was the case last season where Drew and the O fought valiently after IC made Unions run game nonexistent but the O wasn't enough and Union was done. Not to mention Union had 200 plus pound LB's 30 yards back in coverage against good sized athletic Bomber receivers that may have also contributed to IC's success. Trying to be objective dlip's pick today is IC 28-17. The Bombers O will do enough and again, as in Union's first two games the O will be the only bright spot for the Dutchmen but will unfortunately come up a tad short because of a strong Bomber D. Of course dlip is hoping he is wrong and supports his Dutchmen 150%. They can win, the potential is there and so is the work ethic.

Let's go U prove dlip wrong!

Thoughts on today's game:

*First thought is it is amazing how calm dlip is after today's loss to the Bombers. He must really be maturing and getting old.

Positives: The Union offense played some decent football today. They showed, at times, that they can be successful against a very good defense. The highlight for dlip was Union's running game. Dylan Schuck was quite good. He has a north south style and runs very strong. dlip sees a bright future for this kid. Drew Connelly was decent. Drew threw some very accurate balls today. He did press though and threw two poor picks today. That hurt Union and wee a result of just forcing the ball. Hats off as well to Union's O line. Drew had time and they opened some holes for the run. dlip was impressed with their poise and performance. Union is a decent offensive team depsite being 0-3.

Negatives: dlip will start by making the statement that he always does; he does not intend to insult and/or personally put down anyone. He is aware how hard the student athletes and coaches work on a daily basis and has a tremendous amount of respect for all players and coaches alike. Yet he feels it necessary to be honest and objective when formulating and sharing his opinions regaring the team as a whole. The defense was absolutely awful from top to bottom today at Frnak Bailey. The tackling was very poor and inconsistent today. The secondary coverage was very poor. Bomber receivers, like Salve and Utica receivers before them, had more room in the middle of the field then dlip can even comprehend. DB's were giving WAY too much cushion and the help was often late and/or out of position. To dlip, (who is not an expert by any means but is one who has been watching Union football for well over 20 years and feels he has the right to at least respectably comment), this play is not a result of a lack of effort by the defensive players. A lack of focus maybe, but not a lack of effort. The kids are busting their assess out there. To dlip this defense has been going downhill for years now and something needs to change if this team has any desire to get back on the winning track. A defensive coach may do something one way for a certain period of time, it may work. Yet, when it does not work, it must change. And unless something changes on this side of the ball Union is not going to make any forward progress in the near future. On top of this the student athletes need to be guided and taught on how to make the necessary adjustments. The talent is there. Professionals make adjustments and changes to do their jobs best. Pride shold be left at the door. Today there was no pass rush and or pressure from the outside or in. Jason Hendel had all kinds of time today, all kinds. Dropping back defensively and applying little or no pressure clearly wasn't and hasn't been working. Yet do we continue to put three up front? And when we add a fourth, a LB, only to have him step back again and wait for the O to dictate the play and continue to move the ball. Turnovers, turnovers, turnovers were brutal and costly today. The special teams fumble was detrimental today. dlip doesn't know what else to say. He feels the Bombers did what they needed to do and clearly deserve cedit for this W. Yet to dlip, if one can't see what is going on here and comment on it then one should not even bother to write on these boards. dlip supports Union football players and coaches 100%. Yet he feels there is one part of Union's game now that is clearly in trouble.

Breathe easy there buddy. In defense of Union's defense, they were on the field for nearly 40 minutes today. Yes, some of that was their own doing, but consider:

1. After IC opens the game with a 7:29 TD drive, Union fumbles on the first play, and the defense has to go right back out there, with IC having the ball at the Union 31.

2. Later, after another IC TD drive, this one lasting ~5:00, Connolly gets picked off on the first play, and the defense again has to go right back out there, with the ball at Union's 16.

3. After IC was stopped with 5:45 to go in the second quarter, Union fumbling the punt means the defense has to again go right back out there.

You could argue the defense should get a ton of credit. After the opening drive, here's where IC's scoring drives stared: The Union 31, 41, 16, 28 and 19 yard lines. Under those circumstances, I might be happy to only give up 37 points. As I wrote on the E8 board, Ithaca only averaged something like 3.4 yards per play, which is pretty good.

I know, it's tough to see hope in a 9-game losing streak, but keep the faith

LD11 went 7-2 this week.  Lost MMA and Roch-cha-cha.  Not a bad week.  Even picked Kean.  Was a little MMA homer.  14-5 on the year.  4 of my losses are on LL wish picks.  LDstradamus.  No more homer picks.  straight out for the rest of the year.  Put down the big money and follow my lead.  Do it do it.  100% do it.
