Thoughts on today's game:

*First thought is it is amazing how calm dlip is after today's loss to the Bombers. He must really be maturing and getting old.

Translation: Can't have meltdown, and scare young daughter.  ;)

QuoteYou could argue the defense should get a ton of credit. After the opening drive, here's where IC's scoring drives stared: The Union 31, 41, 16, 28 and 19 yard lines. Under those circumstances, I might be happy to only give up 37 points. As I wrote on the E8 board, Ithaca only averaged something like 3.4 yards per play, which is pretty good.

I know, it's tough to see hope in a 9-game losing streak, but keep the faith

dlip hears you bombers and thanks for the kind, calming words of encouragement regarding the Dutchmen. Your point here is a valid one but IDHO if we look at the D's performance as a whole, both during this game and others, Union's defense has made it WAY TO easy for opposing offenses. No offense here but is IC's offense really that good? dlip recalls some IC fans blasting the Bombers for their "lack of" offensive output. IC's first half performance on O looked like a well oiled machine (or as an excited IC player correctly stated on the sideline "a ****ing machine."  :)) Believe dlip he gives credit to the Bombers O for their performance. Hendel took care of buisness and with the exception of a few ugly passes threw the ball well. Sal Sulla was impressive and the O-line deserves credit for their control of the line of scrimmage. Overall though the Union D made very few critical stops and the secondary's coverage was nothing short of piss poor on avg. dlip appreciates your post and definitely will hang in. He will always support the U and hope for the best. During this dismal losing streak though h feels the need to at least attempt to respectfully comment on what he thinks are some of the issues.

Last night on "In the HuddLLe," we graded the Liberty League with the assistance of WPI Head Coach Chris Robertson and WPDM-Potsdam's Chris Engel after three weeks of out-of-conference games.  You might be surprised at some of the grades.  In addition, we had interviews with:

- Coach Robertson concerning the Transit Trophy Game following WPI's victory over Becker Saturday;

- RPI quarterback Mike Hermann following his great passing and rushing effort in RPI's win over Castleton State; and

- RPI Head Coach Tim Landis, who discussed his feelings after his first Division III head coaching win.

As always, we played our "Around the League" package of highlights and recaps, discussed the Liberty League games and seasons past, present and future, and gave our "Lightning Predictions" at the end of the show.  Have a listen at:

I was hoping that Union had returned to the NESCAC, and that these first three weeks were just scrimmages and didn't count.

Wishing Union College the best of luck this afternoon when they face the University of Rochester at noon. Regardless of the dismal 0-3 start the Dutchmen still have an opportunity of making the NCAA's if they run the table in LL play. However unlikely this is, Union does have some talent and can potentially win some games this season. Good luck Union keep playing hard and let's get a W today over the Yellowjackets!

Let's Go U!!!!

St. Lawrence gets the win over Merchant Marine Academy 20-10.  SLU got on the board early with a good aerial attack, and then put the game away in the second half with a strong running game from Marcus Washington.  Washington ended up with 161 yds.  St. Lawrence's sophomore QB Nick Busharis passed for 176 yds and 3 TDs (all in the first half, all to Ethan Sutton).

By the way, Hobart is MONKEYSTOMPING SJF right now 56-14.  That's got to help the LL's image right about now.

dlip would like to congratulate the Union College Football Dutchmen on their first victory of the 2011 season today with a W over the University of Rochester. Once again Union's D gave up a lot, but they played their collective assess off and for that dlip is proud. Unions offense was potent putting up a lot of points/yards that proved to be just enough for the U to hold on. A good must win for Union today. dlip will look to break down the game later tonight/tomorrow and see whats in store for the U next weekend back in Shocktown.

The Rev is at once psyched and bummed.

Psyched because Hobart beating SJF is pretty much upset of the century (OK, maybe only upset of the decade).

Bummed because this morning (sunday) at 1, 12 noon NY time, The Rev looked at the live stats board and live radio links and thought, "Why stay awake? for another 4 hours to listen to the game?

The Rev never imagined Hobart would put the stink to SJF so bad. Awesome.

It was rough and not at all close.  I'd say Hobart avenged the 20 point loss at the hands of Fisher last year.  Just looking back no team outside of Mount Union has beaten Fisher by more than 18 points since 2002...nearly a decade and then this happens.  What a mystery this Fisher team is, I suspect when all I said and done this team will go 6-4...yikes.

Some thoughts on Union's big win over U of R this Saturday:

-dlip really does not need to list Union's offensive numbers against the Yellowjackets, they were damn impressive and there is no question in dlip's mind that this Union team is a very strong offensive team that can hurt their opponents. This may be one of the best offensive 1-3 teams in the country, maybe.

-Union's D gave up 16 first downs, 10 of which were in the air. Union's secondary continues to struggle more so than any dlip can remember. Also, if you are giving up 310 yards in the air against a team like U of R you can be beaten by anyone in this league.

-Union's rushing continues to exceed initial expectations. The O-line is playing well and these young runners are growing up in a hurry. 210 yards on the ground, nice ;D!

-Only 2 penalities and no picks, beautiful. This equals a winning combination and if Drew can keep the ball in Dutchmen hands only, Union has a chance to outgun their opponents like they did yesterday.

-Union won the TOP game. Union's O needs to keep that D off the field as much as possible. We saw yesteray that they can/will allow teams to get back into games once the offense loses some momentum.

-Union's receivers, Justine Gallo (14 receptions), Chase Richey (3 receptions), and Connor Gallo (4 receptions) are proving to be quite reliable. Justin Gallo's skill and athleticism are unquestionable. Congrats to him on another great game. Kid is nasty and cannot be covered one on one.

-Adam Henry is good!

Again, overall this was a huge victory for Union. Not only does it end the 9 game losing streak but it breathes new life into the Dutchmen here in 2011. Next week they face a WPI team that will come into Frank Bailey field very high after defeating RPI to win the Transit Trophy.
