I know there are certainly more far-reaching implications of the government shutdown than this particular tiny one, and I refuse to get into political debates (here or anywhere, for that matter), but it's a shame that MMA seniors will possibly miss a large chunk of their senior season for something out of their control.

Yeah, I'd personally place the under/over for season cancellation at three games (which is half the unplayed season).  There comes a point at which you haven't practiced, the Academy will need to speed up academics and use weekend classes to accomplish it, and that the costs just won't be justifiable to try to make up for lost time on the field.  Again, it's really sad it came down to this.

It's a tight timeframe. The sophomores and juniors have to get out to sea to fulfill their requirements, so it's really important they get out on time. Sophomores have to spend four months at sea and juniors eight months.

That's interesting that they split it up four months one year, eight months the next. At my university, we send the juniors out for a full year. They leave a couple days after sophomore year ends, and come back with a little bit of time to adjust before senior year starts. We save a lot of dormitory space not having an entire year at school.

I couldn't agree more. It is really too bad that the players suffer from something so far from their control.
GO FISHER!!!

It probably won't do much since the coaches aren't being paid but...

University of Rochester's Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity alumni offer to pay for the United States Merchant Marine Academy football team's travel to prevent cancellation of U of Rochester's Homecoming football game October 12, 2013

Issued: October 4, 2013

(Rochester, NY) Due to a lapse in government funding, all United States Merchant Marine Academy (USMMA) varsity sport competitions have been postponed/cancelled until further notice including the University of Rochester's Homecoming football game on Saturday, October 12, 2013.  The lapse in funding has caused a deficit in the travel budget for USMMA athletic teams.

The University of Rochester chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity alumni association has offered to pay for the USMMA football team to travel to Rochester, NY in order to prevent the University's homecoming football game to be cancelled.  Robert Hartz '90, spokesperson for the alumni association says, "Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity has been an integral part of the University of Rochester since its inception in 1856.  We support all organizations on campus but in particular, we are very close to the athletic department and football program.  It would be a shame to have the homecoming football game cancelled so that's why we are offering to help pay for the Merchant Marine's football team to travel to the River Campus."  An inquiry has been placed with the USMMA.

About the University of Rochester's Chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity alumni:
November 22, 1856. It was on this date that the Beta Phi chapter of Delta Kappa Epsilon was founded at the University of Rochester. University of Rochester DKE brothers include the founder of Xerox, Joseph C. Wilson (Wilson Commons, Wilson Boulevard), the co-founder of Bausch and Lomb, Edward Bausch (Bausch & Lomb Hall), William Harkness (Harkness Hall), Charles Force Hutchinson (Hutchinson Hall), Ted Zornow (Zornow Gymnasium), Robert B. Georgen (Georgen Athletic Facility, Georgen Hall), and George Graham Smith (George Graham Smith Plaza) all of which are a few of the many generous, successful, and influential brothers of Delta Kappa Epsilon of the University of Rochester.

When those guys emailed me this afternoon I told them they had a bigger problem on their hand than travel cost.

Right.  By regulation, government workers on furlough are not allowed to volunteer unpaid in that job.  Therefore, the coaches can't coach regardless of travel costs being covered.

Dlip wishing the Dutchmen the very best today in Springfield. This will be the first game of the year Dlip will miss but he will be there in spirit (and on live stats) to support the U. Tough week with a broken computer (no blog write up) and a lot going on at work.

This may be a big day for Union. Today the Young D will tested early and often with the option. We shall see how disciplined these talented players are so early in their college career today. Dlip is hopeful. Also Dlip is hoping the new look O line can make some strides today after a decent performance last week. Union may surprise today but it will take a lot to fall in place all at once for dlip's beloved Dutch to return to Shocktown with a W. LET'S GO UNION!!!!!

dlippiel

Union up 10-0 in the 2nd! Dlip is dying that he is not there! D playing well O line playing well thus far!

dlippiel

Union up 13-7 2nd quarter. Union O looking very good to Dlip. Pride scored on a blocked punt.

2:07 am, Korea time. The Rev is awake, and sees that Hobart is 34-0 at the half.
Poor WPI. I hate blow outs, even if my team is the dynamite.
Webb is awesome. 107 yards so far.

dlippiel

Union up 13-7 at the half. IDHO by far the best half of football for the Dutchmen this season. High points for the first half from Union: -Offensive line's improvement thus far (however looks like Peter Meile got hurt right before half). If that's the case Union will have 3 freshmen on the line again, that's if Meile doesn't return. -The play of Connor Eck, -The young defense holding the pride to less than 3 first downs (approx Dlip hasn't looked at stats yet) so far. They are playing with discipline and staying with their assignments!

So far so good. Dlip can hardly stay in his seat back here in Shocktown. Keys to second half: - O line play must continue, Offense will need to score more because you can't expect SC to not start moving the ball on the ground. Defense must stay focused even if they give up a big play or score. -Special teams must not make any mistakes.

There it is let's see what happens. Go Union!

dlippiel

Union now up 20-7 in 3rd

Stlarry

St. Lawrence up 14-0 on Rochester midway through the 2nd quarter.
St. Lawrence University - 2010 LL Champs

Union up 20-7 start of the 4th. Go U!
