Hobart's problem is they are playing too many close games for their talent level

That's basically why I gave them a C+ in my blog midseason review. Check it out if you haven't already and lmk what you think.

Gohobart.blogspot.com
ITH, I think your analysis is very thorough ,but you were a bit tough on a team with a C+ but not far off(they did win 5 games and Brockport, Ithaca wins are looking good) ...they have some great talent in certain positions but less so at other positions, but they need to play up to talent level at all positions to win LL

OFFENSE: B+(Potential A-)......Mid season MVP: Sweeney
       QB: A(playing at talent level)
       WR/TE: A(playing at talent level)
       RB :  C+ (talent level B-)
OL :  B-( A- on pass protection, C- on run blocking, but improved in last game)
       Redzone Offense: B
DEFENSE: B-(Potential B+).......Mid season MVP: D'Antonio
DB: B+( talent is an A-, some coverage lapses)
LB:  B+(talent is A-, will be better with Jemison healthy)
DL:  C  (talent level is C+)
        Redzone Defense: D
Special Teams B-(Potential B+)
        Placekicking:  C-
        Punting:         B+
        Coverage:      B-
        Punt Return:   B
        Kick Return:    C+
To win the LL they must play at their talent level to beat Springfield and WPI, but they need to play a great game to beat SLU. They need to get much better in the Redzone on Defense and significantly reduce their penalties with MUCH better discipline. GO BART

SLU up to 16th in the most recent polls with Alfred right behind at 17.

Hobart still receiving votes, although just down to 3 votes this week. RPI understandably drops out completely.

Good stuff Bartman. I probably could have gone B / B- but often make comparisons to past teams which is probably a habit I need to break as each season is different.

LL Predictions this week(2-0 last week, 27-6 on year)

Hobart  42         Springfield  28 (2 weeks to watch last year's film of the Springfield "embarrassment" will motivate a healthy Statesmen team to finally play a full game)
SLU      35         MMA           24 (MMA meets a real Defensive Line but still moves on the Larries, but not enough to win)
WPI      21         RPI             23  (3 FGs win it for the men from Troy)
Union   35         Rochester    28  ( this could go either way, but running/ clock control favors the Dutchmen and limits Bronson possessions)

Despite the prediction , I will be rooting for the Mariners to prove me wrong this week....this could be an amazing upset

I think these pretty much mirrored what I picked on Sunday's show. Only difference is I think I went with WPI but I'd say RPI is the favorite in this one.

Speaking of RPI, Dolphins PK Andrew Franks (RPI '15) will be taking over the @RPIAthletics twitter feed at 8 pm tonight. Use #AskFranks in your tweets and ask him a question or two.

Big day for Dlip's Dutchman! Homecoming with some real ****ty weather and Roch cha cha coming to Frank Bailey. This would be a huge win for Union if they are able to pull it off. It would certainly represent continued progress and growth. Let's go Union!

Hobart15

What a win by the Bart. After scoring 70 last week game ball goes to the defense who made all the stops when it was needed. Once again Sweeney shows that he has ice in his veins. Going to be very tough in the bad weather to throw. Almost cost them the game today. Also the kicking game is a big problem. Wow my blood pressure can't take this every week.

Not the prettiest of games from SLU, but a win is a win even if it was 8-0.  4 shutouts on the year is quite remarkable, especially from this program. Did well to neutralize one of the nation's top offenses.  Was quite impressed with MM's D as well.  Richardson got popped and his throwing game just seemed off the remainder of the game.  Did score the TD though.  Going to come down to Hobart as we all expected.

Hobart Defense wins the  game 12-7! Hobart Defense wins a game! Frankly, I knew with the high winds that the offense would  have a tough time today and they did. But Sweeney to Shed on the final scoring drive gets it done with wind gusts in the 40's...I have no idea how he made those throws, especially the TD throw. A tough Springfield team, but the Hobart Defense is now officially on track. Next week  a tough WPI team , and no looking beyond that.
Congrats to SLU on the win against the mighty Mariners...

Congrats to all the victors today in the LL. Dlip is so pleased with Union's dominating win over Rochester today. The Yellowjackets just aren't a good team however Union ran the ball down their throats today like they wanted to. From halfway through the second quarter on the Dutchmen O-line just took over. Kinzelmann and Carn both ran well and the offense had some excellent sustaining drives today. Great win for Union in some ****ing **** ass weather...

UfanBill rightfully pointed out to dlip how effective Union senior FB Tom Jensen's play was today. Jensen was excellent and provided both Dutchmen backs with great lead blocking! Hats off to Jensen he is dlip's (again all the credit to UfanBill for pointing out his stellar play) player of the game.

Dlip also wanted to tip his hat to Rochester Junior QB Daniel Bronson. Bronson is an excellent athlete and competitor. He is tough as nails! Best of luck to Bronson on the remainder of his season.

Hello folks.

I have a granddaughter who will be attending Union starting next fall. I enjoy D3 football  and am trying to learn a little about the Liberty League in general and of course Union in particular. One question that comes to mind is what school is considered Union's biggest rival in football?

I live in Dover, DE and have had the opportunity to attend a few Wesley games; the Wolverines have had some success the last few years and with luck might again make the playoffs but some tough games are upcoming.  I realise Union has been down for a few seasons but it appears things are now on the upswing. I certainly hope to attend a game or two next season in conjunction with visits to my granddaughter.

NedM,
You should be very proud of your granddaughter. Union is a great academic institution and they belong to a fine athletic conference, the Liberty League. The game you need to go to is the Union-RPI game as they compete for "The Dutchmen Shoes Trophy" in the last game of the year. The football rivalry is the longest in New York state spanning 109 years.
You might want to catch a hockey game as they are both Division I hockey even though the rest of the sports are Division III. Have fun the next four years.

Ned dlip welcomes you wholeheartedly to the Dutchmen faithful. It's no secret that Union has been down and out for quite some time. However dlip feels you are correct when saying that they are on the upswing. They are rebuilding the foundation of what was once one of the most respected football programs in the east. The Dutchmen have played in two Stagg Bowls and their last undefeated season was in 2005 where they lost to Rowan in the quarterfinals. The Dutchmen have had one player make the NFL, Rich Romer. Romer played for the Cincinnati Bengals in the mid/late 80's.

As of this season the Dutchmen are lead by Coach Jeff Behrman. Coach Behrman (John Carrol 95) brings excellent leadership skills to the table having been the offensive coordinator at Div 1 Stony Brook under previous Union coordinator Chuck Priore. His assistants are top notch; Defensive Coordinator Rick Flanders (24 years in the Ivy League with Penn and Yale) and Offensive Coordinator Ben Martin (time with the Miami Dolphins, Wagner College, Princeton, and Texas A&M).

Union's biggest rival is without question RPI. RPI is one ugly ass college that sits in the city of Troylet approximately 15 minutes to the east of Schenectady. The Union/RPI rivalry is the oldest in New York State (the teams have played I believe 115 times). Union leads the series 81-27-4. However for the past two decades the RPI program has improved and won many of the meetings between the two schools. They play for the annual Dutchmen Shoes Trophy. This game is clearly the biggest game of the year for both teams regardless of each teams record.

dlip hopes this helps give you a snip-it of what is going on with Union Football. Many of us who have been around since the early 80's have certainly had a roller coaster ride since 2000. However like dlip said before he believes that Union Football is on it's way to greatness again. It's just going to take at least a handful of years.

+k and welcome to the boards pal!
