Looks like SLU just picked up a D-1 transfer at RB.  SLU football has come a long ways.
We may need to check his transcripts to verify the academic prowess.....especially if he gets more than 5 YPC this year.... good luck to the Saints ...see you and your new transfer RB in Geneva this year

UAlbany transfer who didn't get any carries it looks like. Was a stud recruit out of Choate and from Brockton, MA.

His name is Jamal Williams and although I wouldn't have called him a "stud recruit", I did see this kid play in HS and he was very good.  He is a big physical back but probably lacks the cutting ability to be a starting RB even at St. Lawrence but he may fit in well in a one back system because he has the size to block.  Good straight ahead speed and was a very good special teams player in HS (returned several Kickoffs for TDs if I remember correctly)  Also went to Hudson Valley JC after a PG year at Choate I believe.

Overall I think he will fit in well in SLU's system.

Hobart got Shane Sweeney from Albany as a transfer without any action at Albany, and that has worked out well, so SLU might get lucky too

Payne is a good back so I can see him setting up and having a better year, but SLU under Coach Puck is a more spread offense like Hobart's now. The questions I have for the Saints is how they'll reload after graduating both Gallager and Gardiner, not to mention a ton of defensive talent.

Richardson proved to a be a strong QB, just not sure who's coming back in 2017 to fill in the gaps?

Yea he would have been great in that 2 back power/pistol offense SLU ran under Raymond.

I think I might have been a bit vague with my post.  I did not intend to imply that getting a UAlbany transfer meant we were suddenly going to be good, all I meant to say that this program getting someone to transfer to it, let alone a player at the FCS level, was pretty much unfathomable a decade ago.

Tough to say. With a tough schedule this year and losing so many starters on defense I'm not sure what to expect out of SLU this year. The two TEs in Gallagher and Gardiner will hurt as they were so big and versatile, but I think the offense will be just fine. Richardson will be back at QB as well as leading wr ferraro, rb Payne, maybe new rb in williams from albany, plus most of the offensive line. It's the defense that will be the questions mark. I don't think anyone can stop the sweeney + shed train from hobart anyway.

You hit the nail right on the head stlawus. dlip thought the exact same thing when he read your post. SLU has certainly come A LONG WAY in the past ten or so years. dlip continues to be excited for their fans, alumni, coaches, as well as former and current players. It's great to see SLU doing so well and continuing to grow with success on the field.

It was definitely vague. Not even mentioning the school. :)

This was a program that went 4-57 from 1998-2003. That's not just bad, it's non-competitive. Yeah, they sort of smoke and mirrored their way to an NCAA bid in 2010, but they followed it up with 3-6 and 0-10 the next two years. Now they're a perennial contender for the league title, and have one of the best defenses in the region. There's every reason to be excited over what this transfer might mean for the perception of the St. Lawrence program to others. Good on them

Thanks for the kind words dlip!  If it were up to me I'd put Mark Raymond in the SLU Hall of Fame tomorrow.  Can't say enough about what he did for this program.  And I share similar sentiments for Union football.  The Dutchmen were quite impressive in their game against us at Leckonby last year and look to have all the right pieces for a successful rebuild in the coming year or two.

+K to both stlawus and dlip for some LL mutual respect.....hopefully  the league will have a great OOC record in 2017 and a strong transition with our new members....I am very excited with Ithaca and Buff State joining  LL Football

SLU's turnaround has been great for the LL and the East in many respects. Puck is a great recruiter so I expect them to reload in most cases as SLU has really grown and has an athlete-friendly campus / culture in the North Country. The only knock I can give the Saints is they still haven't gotten over the hump as far as a "big win" in the past couple of seasons. That'll come in time I think. It took Hobart about 5 seasons or so to finally crack a big win and eventually make the playoffs after Cragg took over.

I do not disagree with that assessment.  Came very close in 2015 at the Bos (I'm still salty over that Fail Mary!) but still need to take that next big step.  Couple opportunities this year especially with WNEC on the schedule, but excited to see how Puck's first year of his own full recruiting class shapes up.

I don't know how much of this is Swanstrom's different attitude compared to Welch, or just good timing, but I like what he's doing to promote the program and spread the word. This season could be rough—he's got to institute an entire new offensive system, after all. But I think in 2-3 years, the Bombers will be very, very good
