Yeah, asked one of my library student supervisors, who's an athletic training major, how everyone came out of the scrimmage. She said there were no major injuries! Yay!

Pep figured both teams wanted to take a look at the new kids on the block in the second half. For the most part, Pep felt the teams were pretty evenly matched. Curious to see how Hobart and Brockport match up.

I'll be heading over to watch Union scrimmage Hartwick today and will report on it later. There should be plenty of offense. The Dutchmen have a chance to have a special season. My biggest concern is that both teams don't sustain any major injuries.

Hobart has quite the gauntlet to start the season. It will be a great test next Saturday. Kind of glad Joe G has moved on as well as the memories from last year in Brockport.

Well I showed up at Union's Bailey field early for Union's scrimmage vs. Hartwick only to find a high school field hockey game.  ??? After a few frantic moments and a phone call I was off for Oneonta. The miscommunication meant that I missed the 1st quarter of the scrimmage and with that the Union starters BUT later I benefited from the obligatory stop at Brooks BBQ for a chicken dinner. :-*

Reports have it that the Dutchmen came out a little sluggish on offense but then got it together for three 1st half scores. Bellamy,Beal and Ross Jr.all showed well. Irabor was apparently held out but it was not injury related. Hartwick's best was a last second hail-mary pass that was caught but the receiver was NOT in the endzone. :o The Union starters did not appear in the 2nd half letting the 2nd and 3rd teamers get all the snaps. Hartwick scored a TD after an ill advised Union pass resulted in a pick which gave them a short field. They added a field goal.  Union's subs scored on a beautifully thrown 50 yard bomb. Final "score" 28-9. ...And YES, the chicken was delicious. ;D

So, Joe G was actually listed as a Junior last year at Brockport. Somehow, I thought he graduated from Brockport and was a Graduate student at Ithaca for his last year of eligibility. He is listed as a Senior this year for Ithaca and still is awaiting a jersey # on the roster. Interesting, I wonder where he will finally get his degree from, since Ithaca has a two year residency requirement for their undergraduate degree? If I am right( not saying I am, just working with available info) Joe G is playing  for the Bombers for one season and will get his degree from Brockport when his IC credits transfer back to Brockport.  Seems kinda strange, I must be wrong?

The real Union Dutchman...

I knew Bob Ridings. Every athlete at Union knew Bob Ridings. When I first came to campus in the fall of 1968 the first person I saw was Bob at his equipment "cage". He asked me "what size cleats do you wear son"? I said 9...he gave me a 8 wide...they fit perfectly.
I swear I can still smell his pipe...I remember being back on campus in the mid 90's, and someone saying that he had passed. The next day I was at the game, I smell the pipe, followed by hearing him call my name in that high squeaky voice of his. Turned around,I thought I was seeing a ghost.

The D3 Preview made multiple mentions to Joe G as a graduate transfer.  Not sure why he was listed as a Jr last year, unless he was considered a red shirt Jr for football purposes, and he became a "Senior" in the Spring semester, then graduated with his class.

He has received his two degrees from BP as of last May. He's effectively a graduate student at IC who may or may not finish the program he's in after the football season ends.

OK, thanks , it didn't make sense that he was listed as a Junior for Brockport, hence my confusion. Also, in D1 programs they often put an (*) for the grad student "Seniors" and his Bio does not reference a specific graduate program. In any case, Joe G. will have plenty of time to gel with his new teammates by the time of the Hobart game :o

I'm not sure if it was already discussed, but he was at UAlbany as a true freshman, they had him as a TE and he did not play, so he redshirted. Then he transferred to Brockport as a second year freshman. So last year he really was 4th year kid in the classroom, but a jr on the field

Pretty cool Garnet. Dlip remembers seeing him around when he was a kid trolling Frank Bailey field and Achilles Rink. Always had a smile for dlip's pestering ass when he was begging Gil Egan for his hockey stick.

Any predictions for opening weekend for LL teams?  IC, U and RPI should have easy wins. SLU should be able to put up points, but I don't know much about Utica.  SJF looked OK from what I saw in their preseason scrimmage, Buff St is supposed to be improved, so seems like a toss-up.  UR has a tough one against CWRU, could get ugly.  Hobart is much improved from last year, BPort has taken a step back (simply with the  loss of Joe G), so the game will be much closer than last year.  Smart money picks Bport all day, but I never claimed to be smart....
