Ice Bear

Ice Bear says he's ready to throw down his prediction for Saturday's awesome ****ing game between the two undefeated and nationally ranked LL teams Ithaca and Union.

Ice Bear will start by saying that there are two teams since the season started that have a realistic shot, although slim, at defeating the Bombers. Cortland and Union. At the beginning of the season it was thought that the likes of RPI, Hobart, Alfred, and maybe Union would be potential winners by upset. Cortland has come out as the E8 front runner and Union has won every game it's played thus far (albeit with wins against very weak OOC teams) and put itself in position for the LL title. From 0-10 to this the Dutchmen have really righted the ship and this is proving to be a very special season thus far.

Ice Bear says on the other hand IC has really had a special year and one that may run right up to the quarter and even possibly the semi-finals of the NCAA tourney. They have blitzed most of their competition this season and really only had one tough half (the second half of the SJF game) to speak of. This is really going to be a very special Saturday for the LL (and the E8 with Cortland/B-port).

Ice has already broken down what both teams will need to do/have happen in order to come out with a big victory in a previous post. At Butterfield there will be two talented teams facing off. Excellent athletes are on both sides of the field and it will come down to who will make the plays. In all honesty Ice is just going to sit back, relax, watch, and enjoy. Ice is obviously ecstatic about the season his Dutchmen are having and very proud of the success the Bombers are having and national attention they are receiving as an LL member. He has a ton of respect for the Bombers, their history, and their fans. He is so pleased with the rise of his Dutchmen will have his head held ****ing high and be proud as **** to be a Garnet fan regardless of outcome Saturday. No complaining about the refs, no bull**** pot shots at IC if they start to run away with it. Just going to sit back and enjoy this great match-up between great D3 LL schools...ok enough BS.

Ice says IC will be too much and get out ahead and overwhelm the hard playing Dutchmen D early. Union O will have some success but just not be able to keep pace. IC shows it may not be quite the seventh best team in the country...but they're damn close. This is a very good Union team period.

Ithaca 45 Union 24

B-port will upset Cortland and their offense stakes their claim to being back in the mix.

B-port 31 Cortland 13

I think you've got the results right, but the scores a bit high. Thinking 31-17-ish for IC, 21-10 for Port

Oline89

As much as I would love to see Union win, giving the LL 2 potentials in the NCAA, I agree with the board.  IC wins big.   Good weather, Germ working his skills, they will keep pressure on the whole game.  44-21 Ithaca

I think Brockport-Cortland is closer, but their defense wins out again.  14-7 Brockport

The one thing giving me pause from picking BP is the fact the Cortland ST unit has managed to score a TD every week for the past several. Those kinds of plays, at home especially, could swing the game in the Dragons favor. Defense doesn't look as strong as BPs, but their O keeps finding ways to win games, usually with help from a ST play or two.

Bad pick week going 1-2 and 27-8 on the season. The LL is still 15-11 OOC., 2-1 last week as I missed  SLU dominating RPI  ......and 29-9 on picks this season

Picks for WEEK 8:

RPI                35(21)                     St. Lawrence                24(35)                         Either RPI comes back strong after bye week( my pick) or the Larries surprise the Engineers through the air. The Later

Union             42(24)                     Buff State                     10(14)                         Dutchmen easily stay undefeated. Tighter than expected

Ithaca            52(59)                     Rochester                        7 (0)                        A stats filled first half for the Bombers, but the Yellowjackets escape the shutout Shutout

Get ready for the clash of Union v. Ithaca on November 2 at 1pm at Butterball Bowl

WEEK 9:

Buffalo State  20               RPI       21                   Buffalo State could stun the Engineers, but not counting on it

Hobart            35               SLU      28                   Hobart offense performs better, but defense hangs on as Larries fail on last drive

Union             35               Ithaca   34                   Ithaca upset at Butterfield as U defense dials up a good game plan and keeps the Dutchmen in the game with 5 sacks of The Germ and 2 Ints. The Germ and Gladney still have a  great yardage day but Bellamy and friends score 1 point more.  A Classic and the refs have a good game ;D

Ice Bear,
Someone has to break this Butterfield streak at some point, why not Union, why not Saturday?Hansen says Union has a 20% chance, Comphuterratings.com says it is 10%, everyone on this board says 14 points + for IC....I love the underdog going into the Darth Vader Like Bombers Den and winning. It also gets 2 LL teams in the NCAAs if Union and Ithaca win out the rest of the regular season.....LFGU!!

LET'S GO U
After careful consideration, and a profound lack of trust that my Spectrum WiFi will be online tomorrow in view of the weather of the last few days :o, I will be making the 3 hour trip to Butterfield tomorrow morning. I can only feel dread with the possible field conditions these two excellent football teams might face. I hope the grounds crew guys are working overtime.

Speaking of overtime. I would think that if the Dutchmen can get off to a decent start they can play with the Bombers. Maybe the game will need extra time. I'm painfully aware that Union has never won at Ithaca and in fact the Bombers have won the last nine meetings. :-[  That doesn't mean many of the games haven't been close, four of them were by single digits. Last year the Bombers got out quickly mostly because Union QB Will Bellamy looked like "a dear in the headlights". A mishandled snap,  a holding penalty negating a 25 yd. play and a sack in the first series followed by a quick Ithaca TD, Wabi to Gladney, indicated early that it might not be Union's day. Two poorly thrown Bellamy interceptions later, another Gladney TD and it was 21-0 at the half. It was by far the worst half Bellamy had all season. All credit to the Ithaca D...In the 2nd half, Union settled down but still couldn't score. The final was 24-0.

Bellamy needs to play better for Union to have a chance and I fully expect he will, He's currently 90/133, 67.7%, 1305 yds, 15 TDs and only 2 picks. He's also shown more escape-ability, tucking the ball and running when needed. He's only been sacked 6 times. With all their playmakers I expect the Dutchmen wiil score some points this year.

How about the D? Will they be able to contain JoeG and Gladney. They have the pieces and the tools. They're a deep, talented and confident bunch.  I think they'll keep a close eye on Gladney but Vido might then be a problem. And they really haven't faced a QB with JoeG's ability so he'll be a handful

I commend my friend Bartman for picking the Dutchmen. I've been their biggest believer all season so I'm staying on board. Remember overtime? I think the Dutchmen win 27-23 in OT.

Not to nitpick, I would never, but I believe that score in OT would be physically impossible astronomically unlikely.

Mr. Ypsi

Well, not IMPOSSIBLE, but terminally stupid!  If Union went up 27-20 in OT, Ithaca COULD then kick a FG! ::)

OR, IC could go up 23-20, then Union score a TD and everyone forget the game is now over and Union adds the EP! :P

Many things are highly implausible; few things are flat-out impossible. ;)

C'mon Mach, a safety in OT is so rare, the new rules say it counts double....everyone knows that....great pick Ufan ;)

Well E-X-C-U-S-E me...Mach you're absolutely right. I know you love me saying that. I meant it to be 21-21 tie, Ithaca FG scores first in OT, then Union wins it with a TD. 27-24 ...same scenario and score as the 2012 game but with the results flipped. Thanks for the nitpick. I like to be right too. ;D

By the way. I'd enjoy meeting any of you guys at the game tomorrow. I'll be the guy wearing the white Union Football hat. I had it custom made. :P Good guys wear white.

So I can't find the exact rules for OT online for the NCAA but how about this:

Score is tied 21-21 going into overtime.

Ithaca has the ball first and throws an interception.  The Union player who intercepts it tries to lateral it in the end zone and it goes out of bounds (or some other scenario where Union creates a turnover and then commits a safety).  Ithaca leads 23-21.

Union then gets their turn with the ball down 23-21 and scores a TD.  Game would end 27-23.

I just can't find a rule regarding safeties in overtime for the defense in the NCAA.  I did find out that in Pro football on two point conversions at least that the safety in that situation is one point.  The ncaa rule isn't clear from what I'm gathering.
