Well the LL is still in the non league section of the schedule, and it appears that Ithaca has the most difficult game this week (although I don't know how Stevenson is).  Don't know what to think of Ithaca's team with a lot of new players on both sides of the ball, especially defense.  The win last week was much closer than the score indicated, although IC turned the ball over at real bad times as well. (twice inside the redzone I believe).  They were about to go up 21-0 early in the 1st and fumbled in the redzone.

But I think a team with a good QB can do real well against Ithaca, as the BSU QB had a bunch of open Wr's that he couldn't connect with at various points in the game.  Ithaca also threw more WR screens and bubbles than I have ever seen in a football game and I'm being serious.  They look like all RPO reads but I'm not exactly sure.  In the end 600+ yards of offense for a team with a first year QB is a good thing for bomber fans.

All good pts, JU.

It was only 24-14 IC going into the 4th qtr. BP had a relatively easy opener against a FSU team that sadly, for them, is probably going to have a down year after being atop the MASCAC for about a decade. I know Frank likes IC in this one, but I am leaning BP, for now. Should be a close, defensive game I think. Definitely one of the best games of Week 2.

1986 Hobart/Union football:

Someone (Michael Capone) has put up a bunch of Hobart games from the mid 1980s on youtube.  Go to 13:20 and watch the punt return in this game....NO FLAG on the play.

And what is the logo on the Union helmets?

What happened to the kid they had before Germanerio? Nabi, I believe it was. Did Wingfield transfer in from some where?

Nabi would have been a senior last year, meaning he chose not to " covid redshirt" and stay this year.  I have to assume he wasn't pleased as to how his career went down at IC, and it must have been an uncomfortable situation for all involved.

The kid now is a JR and would have been a freshman the last time IC played in 2019. He did not transfer as far as I know but I'm not too close with anyone in the program anymore either.

Nice footage, thanks...the Union punt returner is fielding the punt on a knee (can't tell if he had signaled for a fair catch) when he's drilled by an oncoming Hobart defender. The official is right there and NO FLAG?...BTW Union won this game 7-6 on it's way to an undefeated regular season. They lost is the first round of the NCAA playoffs to Ithaca 24-17 in overtime. :( I can't say for sure that I was at this game but I know I was there for the Ithaca game.

Yea in terms of the Union helmet, it's tough to tell but that does look like a football.  The 1989 Stagg Bowl is on YouTube as well, but Union clearly has Union written out in bigger letters.  Also checked out that helmet project website and they don't have a whole lot of older Union helmets which is odd because they seem to have a lot of old helmets on there at all levels.

Ice Bear

Ice Bear says great footage and thanks for the share Utah. Yes, it is a football on their coconuts, Ice remembers it well. He wasn't a fan of it at the time. He prefered the word Union written in cursive (his all time favorite and the log used during the b89' Stagg Bowl run). However, Ice must say he loves the new all white helmets with the U that the Dutch are sporting today.

Ice Bear says he was almost definitely at that game with Ice Bear senior watching the beloved Dutchmen faithful raise hell from the couch they placed on the hill directly behind the Hobart bench. Ah the memories Ice has...

Well I have found out that the 1986 Union helmets have some history behind them.  On November 11, 1886, Union played it's first football game against Albany Medical College and lost 8-0 (they would redeem themselves a week later beating RPI 4-0).  100 years later the school decided to celebrate the 100 year mark of the program and had a specific logo on the helmets which was in the form of football and had the years (1886-1986) on it as well as the words "Union" and "centennial" underneath.

Makes me think that Ithaca will have it's 100 year mark of the program in 2030.  Like Union, their first opponent ever no longer has a football program (Mansfield, although they do have a sprint one).

History lesson over, carry on.

Thanks Utah, +K. Brought back some great memories, watched some of the game with my son last night, first time he'd ever seen a film of me playing.
Good research on the helmet decals, we hated them, loved the script Union decals.

Thank you Garnet.  I had seen a pin which had a different logo but that looks about right.

Another fun Union fact:  21st president and Union grad Chester A. Arthur would die one day before Union's first ever football win against RPI on Nov. 18th, 1886.

+k to redswarm for recognizing this highlight from the game. It still is amazing to me that Ali has reached the level of success ( Super Bowl ring ,protector of THE Goat and should make the ProBowl this year),from his humble Hobart and LL beginnings. He worked his butt off, flattened quite a few defenders and deserves every dollar and the right to introduce himself from THE Hobart College .  ;D
