Interesting shift to permitting an AQ for six-team conferences.  Makes me wonder the LL will cut Buff St. loose - they're a weird for for a bunch of reasons, and it's hard to imagine any reason they're in the league other than the need for an AQ.

No point to doing that. Scheduling is hard enough already. The 7 and 7 thing we have with the E8 is mutually beneficial.

Pep is of the mind that Buffalo State will improve with its hiring of Lazarus Morgan as head coach. Pep was sorry to see him leave Alfred's defensive coordinator position but understands the move, given his previously working with Curt FitzPatrick. Am actually happy to see him get a HC job. Like Alex Yunevich said to the Alfred University president, who hired him with the understanding that they were counting on him to improve the football program and shed the "Scoreless Wonders" nickname after an 0-5-1 season in which they scored a total of 12 points, "There's no place to go but up!"

Buffalo State's 0-10 record will no doubt improve with Morgan at the helm. He's a likeable coach. With the AQ going to six teams, when does another SUNY school join the fun so the SUNYAC can have its own football conference? You've got Buffalo State, Brockport State, Cortland State, Alfred State and Morrisville State....anyone hear of any SUNY schools adding football?

In the E8, you've got Alfred, Fisher, Utica, Hartwick....then Brockport, Cortland, Morrisville.

Hilbert College is adding football this fall....will they join the E8?

D3 football....lots of changes in the works!

Bartman

A coaching loss for the Saxons, but I'm sure Coach Morgan will improve the Bengals. Hope Pep has a great year until the Fall, and his young Saxon's prepare well for successful 2022.

Though soon to be spread out over four conferences, SUNY already has six institutions playing D3 football. Above listing does not include SUNY- Maritime.

You still need 4 core members and the SUNYAC won't let any of those others join as a full member. Maybe Morrisville but I doubt it. They're a strange bunch. They could do women's hockey under their banner, for example, but since that would require acknowledging the existence of SUNY Canton, they refuse.

I saw some whispers about the UAA possibly forming it's own football league. Is there really any chance that UofR would flee the LL to compete against teams in Chicago, St Louis, etc....?  Hard to believe

Listening to the Twitter Space with the Landmark Commissioner, who appears to understand how the system works. One of the Presidents reach out to her a few years ago and inquired how the Landmark could get football back. She mentioned that the deal was to get the founding members (majority all under one umbrella as opposed to being affiliate members. I wouldn't be surprised to see that move made. Why not, when you can claim an AQ bid. I do know scheduling is the big issue.

Caz Bombers

former Bombers DC Michael Toerper is coming back from Holy Cross as head coach.

Welcome back, godspeed, and Ooga Booga.

Seems like the team is good with this choice....

that's pretty cool. Now out-recruit and out-coach RPI/Hobart/Union and go win the league.

IC798891

Excited that Toerper is back. He was an outstanding coach and recruiter — and as evidenced by the video JU posted, you can see that the players loved him.

I'm curious to see what happens with the staff. To my knowledge, Swanstrom was the offensive play-caller, so it will be interesting to see what happens there. Does an OC come in from the outside? Does Mike Hatcher — who was the OC and play-caller at Misericordia — take over that role and someone steps in to take Hatcher's previous spot?

And it's always interesting to see how a coach transitions from the Xs and Os of being a position coach/coordinator to the more CEO-type of HC.

Swanstrom was great for the program. Mike Welch will forever be a legend at IC, but Swanstrom brought a different type of energy and enthusiasm to the program that I think was needed. Ultimately, there were no NCAA trips, but the Bombers went 3-1 in Jug games, and were on the cusp every season. A great four seasons.

I believe Toerper is the coach to take the program to the next step, and become perennial playoff participants.  Let's go Bombers!

Ice Bear

Ice Bear says congrats to IC on the excellent hire. The Bear says the dude is solid.

Random college hockey post:

So I'm looking at some random Union/RPI hockey stuff on their websites, and was surprised to see that Union only started d1 hockey in 1991 (I thought they always played at that level).  Then I dug deeper and noticed D1 and "D3" teams would often play each other in hockey going back to the 1950s and before.  But I noticed that there was only D1 championships starting in 1948 and d3 championships started in 1984.  So I was wondering what "D3" teams did back then?  Were there just no championships?  I noticed that Colby beat RPI in hockey every once in a while in the 1950s and 1960s, but they had no shot at the playoffs like RPI did?  If Colby went 22-0 or something would they have been eligible for the D1 hockey championships? I'm guessing small schools just never considered travelling across country for National small college tournaments and the costs just simply didn't make sense.

Well there was no D3 prior to 1973. So you wouldn't have had a D3 championship in the 50s or 60s anyway. Now whether there was a College Division Championship, the precursor to D2 and D3 in at least basketball starting in the mid 50s, for Ice Hockey I have no idea but I suspect not.

Kind of like football. Lots of "D3" football schools have bowl game footballs from the 20s into the 60s. You just competed. Small or not.
