That would be the Bob Ridings. An absolute LEGEND at Union College. Not only for his portrayal of the Union Dutchman and the Firing of the Cannon but for his full time job as equipment manager for all Union athletic programs. For 48 years every Union athlete that wore a Garnet uniform was issued that uniform by Bob Ridings.

From his 2007 induction in the Union Athletic Hall of Fame...
"From 1956-91, Athletic Equipment Manager Bob Ridings dressed as the Dutchman to assist in cheerleading at home football and basketball games and to salute Union touchdowns by firing a small cannon. He is memorialized with a plaque at "The Cage" in Alumni Gym. On the plaque, the inscription reads "A very special person and a valued member of the Union College Athletic Staff for 48 years. Bob enhanced the lives of Union students, faculty, staff and alumni with his wit, warm personality, and love for people of all ages. Bob will always be remembered in the hearts and minds of the "Union Family" who had the priviledge to know him." He received Union's Alumni Award for Meritorious Service in 1975."

Thanks Bill for the explanation , many D3 school have had special spirit supporters like Bob, it's always nice to remember them as you have done. I still think he could have used a new barber, and now I know who to blame that annoying teeny tiny cannon.

Ice Bear

Ice Bear says Union Sr. QB Donovan Pacatte will be back under center this afternoon up in SLU country. The Bear says Fr. name stud Patch Flanagan has rightfully claimed the #2 spot on the depth chart and will back Pacatte up from here on out. Ice Bear is hoping for an injury free victory for the U today heading into the bye week next week (he hopes no injuries for both teams).

Union leads St. Lawrence 21-7 at halftime. A couple of things stand out...Union RB Ike Irabor left the game after scoring a TD and has not returned. It's hard to say what the injury is since the sketchy St. Lawrence broadcast immediately pans away from any and all apparent injuries to shield their audience from seeing something potentually upsetting. A move you'd see in a high school broadcast. I hope Irabor is OK but don't think he'll play anymore today.

Donovan Pacatte looks good. The Union defense is mediocre but adequate. St. Lawrence QB Daniel Lawther likes to throw.

Ithaca pulling away from Rochester after a testy 1st half where both teams were getting chippy.

And if you think the SLU broadcast is bad, the Ithaca one is the worst I've ever seen.  I'm guessing the TV school lets the students produce and do everything on their own because every 3rd play is shown from either a shaky handheld 10 yardline sideline angle or an above head angle with the ball not on screen.  God bless these kids for trying but man it is frustrating to watch.

Some prominent Union fans always call for the Dutchmen to run the football. Papa Ice Bear must be happy because the Union College Dutchman methodically ran the ball down the throat of the St. Lawrence Larries in the 2nd half. One man's misfortune becomes another's opportunity for RB Michael Fiore who took the bulk of Union's carries with Ike Irabor sitting out. Fiore ran 26 times for 127 yards and 4 TDs Jonathan Anderson added 9/56 and Joseph Ferreira 7/36. No potential happiness for the rest of the LL as Ike Irabor was prominently seen on the Union sideline without helmet but moving fine. With an off week coming up and then a tuneup against Rochester I expect he'll be ready for Hobart on 10/29.

Union QB Donovan Pacatte played the entire game and was an efficient 14/16 for 206 yards though he did have an goal line interception when he threw late to an open Andre Ross Jr.

In a lot of ways, the first half was Ithaca's worst half of the season. It's a testament to the talent difference of the rosters that IC was up 21-10.

The Bombers had a ton of trouble with the Rochester running game early. Papantonis had a 34 yard run early in the 2nd quarter and a 64-yard run on the next drive. Ithaca also missed two kicks, one of which was a 47-yarder that was necessary after the Bombers had two first downs wiped out by holding penalties after a completed pass.

But the second half was a different story. IC's defense tightened up, and honestly, there wasn't much else to it. The Bombers averaged 8.7 yards per rush, and completed 21-of-28 passes. They also got their third return TD of the year — and second punt return TD of the season. It's been a Mike Welch era season from the return game.

As for Rochester, Papantonis is the real deal, and the best RB in the LL. The Yellowjackets would be an interesting team with a few more pieces

QuoteFiore put together a career day in Union's 44-7 win over St. Lawrence. He racked up 126 yards on the way to four trips into the end zone, becoming the first Union player to score four rushing touchdowns in a game since 2008.

Ice Bear says congratulations to Union Jr. RB Michael Fiore on his being named to the D3Football.com Team of the Week. The quote from the write up is above. The Bear says Fiore is one of 4 very talented backs on the Union roster. Fiore is very tough to tackle. He can find space while also gaining yards after contact. Ice loves Fiore's game!

Not sure if anyone here knows this, but the Cortaca game at Yankee Stadium is now being picked up by the YES network (which I don't have, and never want to get).  Does this mean the game will not be streamed for free?

Ha I don't want any stinky Yankees announcers near this broadcast.  Maybe next year the bombers can play a home game at Fenway!

Does anyone know what type of healthcare protocols there are at RPI for gameday visitors? The website is not definitive or specific to visitors attending a few hour game...Maybe I missed it. I'm still hopeful for a Statesmen season comeback coupled with my friends at Union and RPI upsetting the Bombers. Not likely, but hey ......you never know in the Liberty League. ;D

"Bassett said that students in the Roy H. Park School of Communications will have the benefit of working as part of the YES Network broadcast, which will also be streamed by Ithaca College Television at ICTV.org. The college's student-run radio station WICB will air the game as well, to Central New York at 91.7 FM and streamed everywhere at WICB.org."
