Things didn't end too pretty between Ithaca and Union last year either as Patches O Houlihan's brother cheap shotted IC's qb out of the victory formation. Chaos ensued. The North remembers.

Quote from: unionpalooza on November 02, 2024, 03:27:24 PMYeah, you'd think a 24-0 win would take the edge off.  Pretty funny when there's 125 Ithaca guys on the field and the HC is the only one who can't keep his composure.

Late in the game, things got really, really chippy.

--Ithaca was flagged for a personal foul for unnecessary roughness

--Union got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct — from what it looked like, a Union player was jawing with the Ithaca sideline

--Two plays later, Ithaca got flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct for shoving a Union player after the whistle

None of this is a judgement on either squad or an excuse, merely an attempt at an explanation

That second penalty on the Union guy for jawing was instigated by Toerper, who was chirping at Union players all day.  First class trash bag.  Maybe he's grumpy about taking the program in reverse -  inherited a stacked Swanstrom roster and went 12-1; then 9-3 last year; seems like 6-4 and home for Thanksgiving this year.

Congrats to Hobart on pulling out the win and wrapping up the LL title.  Can definitely see them winning a tournament game (or two) this year, especially if they get they kind of favorable first round game the LL game has gotten the past few years (UMass Dartmouth, Springfield, etc.).

Well I've heard from two people now who have said when Wingfield got hurt last year Union players were saying things that implied the injury was done on purpose or that they were glad it happened (players).  The things that were said I guess were true whether the injury was done on purpose is another wild accusation but wtf knows.  A HC needs to be better than to be chirping at players though but a ref isn't going to let that happen either and I wasnt there so I have no idea.

Union hasn't scored a point in nearly a month while Patches runs around in circles overthrowing people. My hunch is that any frustration is mutual.

And yea Hobart is real good if Colombi and his WRs are on point.  He had some perfect passes today and #1 for them is probably the best WR in the league and has the physical edge over most defenders.  They play a wierd defense with those ends in a wide 5 like that but it has worked for the most part so who am I to say anything.

Hey, I didn't have a microphone on the IC sideline, nor am I a lip reader. I saw Union get flagged for some sort of post-play thing, replayed it like 5 times because I couldn't figure out what it could be for, and then sort of figured it out when I saw the Union guy facing the IC sideline and everyone seeming animated.

I didn't even say the Union guy instigated it or was the only one doing it! I said he was jawing *with* the Ithaca sideline. *With*, as in, both sides. I'm not the ref, I didn't throw the flag. What do you want me to do about it?

I'm not going to bother addressing the rest of the shots at Toerper or IC's program, as I don't think it would be productive for anyone

Bartman was on the road at a family event and missed the live action yesterday. Quite a day.

Congrats to Buffalo State for their surprising win over the Yellowjackets, no one predicted that.
Congrats to Ithaca for an unsurprising win over the Garnet Chargers. Back to back shutouts is surprising given new HC Jon Drach's coaching background.Unfortunately some bad blood at the end of the game between two programs that are obviously frustrated with their seasons.
Congrats to my Hobart Statesmen for winning the LL AQ before the potentially dramatic 11/16 league ending "winner take all" contest against the Yellowjackets. I was really looking forward to an intense final regular season closer with everything on the line.

I know it's an incredible long shot but...people realize that if Ithaca were to upset Cortland, the Bombers might be a very viable Pool C team, right?

Yes, I realize this and mentioned it in an earlier post, and I'm rooting big time for the Bombers in Cortaca. I think the Bombers have shown good progress every week, and have a legit shot in the game. But Boyes is awesome and would have to have an off day to make it work.As a selfish matter, that would help Hobart and the LL.

Alright this happened right in front of me. If you want to watch it go to the Union game video https://unionathletics.com/sports/2018/8/23/football-video.aspx scroll down and you'll see the game archived (because unlike many schools Union does free archives) and at about the 2:33 mark you'll see Union's 2 time captain #43 LB Cole DeSilva make a tackle on a 2nd down play. In the background you can see the Ithaca coach, who I believe is H/C Toeper, in the ear of the official about something. The coach then chirps at Union players on the field and specifically calls out DeSilva. On the ensuing play Union makes the 3rd down stop and DeSilva immediately turns and confronts coach Toeper. DeSilva gets flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct. Union coach Drach took DeSilva off the field and he didn't return. IMO coach Teoper was totally out of line and classless for interacting with ANY Union player on the field. DeSilva reacted with frustration. The sideline official witnessed and overheard the whole exchange and should have intervened sooner. A couple of plays later a Ithaca O-lineman shoved a Union player and only then did it seem like the officials conferred about controlling the chippiness. A later halfback option pass attempt by Ithaca's Jalen Leonard-Osbourne on a 3rd and 17 smelled like a deliberate attempt by Ithaca to rub it in to an already defeated Union squad. it fell incomplete and Leonard-Osbourne was drilled. Again classless. In the handshake line Union coaches stopped to shake the Ithaca coaches hands and coach Toeper again lost control of his emotions and had to be pulled away. Sad

And about the game itself. It's been since 1975 that Union has been shut out in consecutive games. Props to Hobart and Ithaca defenses for that but Union is it's own worst enemy. The offense moved the ball at times but sustained nothing due to five offensive holding calls, poor run blocking and ineffective passing. ::) The defense played good enough to win but needed more help. The most efficient player on the field for the Garnet was the punter. A quote from this morning's Schenectady Daily Gazette by coach Jon Drach says..."Our progression is not just this year. It's far beyond this year. We have plans as far as what this is going to be a year from now, two years from now, three years from now. All the steps that these kids take in the next three or four weeks is going to continue to build towards that." Sounds like coach Drach has a concept of a plan but I've seen little "progression". ::) On to a winnable? home game against Rochester and then the Shoes game.

I mean I agree that Toerper shouldn't be talking to players and it looks like he was (even if the players were dirty).  But you are making up some things here and filling holes with some speculation.  The ref was right there when Toerper was yelling at the field.  He was not flagged or even spoken too.  Toerper is widely loved by his players, staff, fans and school but the same can't be said for the Union program/staff from what I have heard (and read first hand from multiple friends inside the Union program).

If Toerper is sticking up for his players against cheap dirty play from anyone he should be commended for it, not called "classless."

UFan, I think that "progression" is first and foremost going to mean rebuilding the roster.  There is just a big hole in the roster thanks to two poor recruiting years and a bunch of transfers at the end of the Behrman era.  But plenty of reason to be optimistic over the next few years as the underclassmen turn into juniors and seniors and the recruiting pipeline refills.

No last year when Wingfield got hurt Union players were celebrating or saying classless things.  Last year though and I agree Toerper needed to handle that differently or at least address it with Dratch before the game or even off season.

Just kidding. I mean, Union totally used to duck Ithaca, but it's always fun beating them and reminding them that their program will always be behind IC's. Heck, even when IC wasn't good, beating Union was never a problem. Given that Union's lost 13 of 14 since the series restarted, maybe they should call up some people from the 1980s, dust off that "Reasons why we don't want to play IC" book.

Quote from: unionpalooza on November 02, 2024, 08:11:54 PMThat second penalty on the Union guy for jawing was instigated by Toerper, who was chirping at Union players all day.  First class trash bag.  Maybe he's grumpy about taking the program in reverse -  inherited a stacked Swanstrom roster and went 12-1; then 9-3 last year; seems like 6-4 and home for Thanksgiving this year

Oh please, you can watch the play, there is nothing cheap and dirty (and a ref is also standing right there watching it).  Coach Twerp is just being a whiny B.

No last year when Wingfield got hurt Union players were celebrating or saying classless things.  Last year though and I agree Toerper needed to handle that differently or at least address it with Dratch before the game or even off season.

Oh, fair enough.  And if any U players did so, totally agree that would make them tools.
