Rolevio

Rolevio thinks the only thing missing in that outfit is the mullet wig.

How far can they go? A week before the season ended, we would've said the national semifinals. Now we're not so sure.

Looks like theres an open seat on the IC bandwagon....

Wow, a home loss to IC's biggest rival where the records have never mattered and the road team has won 5 of the last 7 jugs worries them that much, huh? Last time the Bombers lost the Jug at home and made the post-season, they made it to the National Quarterfinals(another stat, Franklin).

THAT, my friend, is an excuse mixed with a stat.  You're improving slightly.  Still a numbskull.

Frank, there is no excuse there by gb15.
A prime example of Ithaca's class b/w the two schools is how you, as a Union broadcaster, will come on these boards and act like a buffoon. Some representation of your school and broadcasting department. Wait, is there a broadcasting department?

As far as Frank Rossi "spouting off" and being a radio announcer...What the heck?

He takes the criticism for being an avid fan, yes...but anyone listening to his broadcasts has to say they are extremely well done, very informative and as objective as possible.  ZA has heard calls that went in Unions favor where Rossi stated that Union was lucky because that call definitely was not pass interference or a block in the back, etc....

Don't think he deserves any criticism for being an avid fan and an announcer.  He gives major credit to the opposing teams players and exposes them in a very positive light when they achieve something good on the field.  He's well prepared and knows the opposing players names, stats, and strengths.  Those broadcasts are exceptional!

ZA22, if I could give u karma, I would.  Thanks for the props. :-)

This is so brilliantly naive, Rolevio can't help but be impressed.

Hey Go bombers....First of all, ZA and most others don't think the E-8 is "inferior"...Most expect a tight game....It's D-3 football for cryin out loud....Certain leagues might have consistently stronger programs from their top one or two teams, but from the looks of things, each league has their share of teams that are so-so!!!

You guys started bragging about tougher schedules, and tougher offenses, etc...

Don't see where anyone has bragging rights as to playing THE toughest schedule....Don't think anyone called the E-8 a "sham" as was stated recently about the LL....To play THE toughest schedule a team from the E-8 would have to play almost every game but two or three, outside their conference...Same for any league...

Fantasy schedule for Union to achieve THE toughest schedule to prove to the E-8 we're for real....

Game 1- RPI, Game 2-Hobart, Game 3-Cortland, Game 4-SJF, Game 5-ITHICA, Game 6-Delaware Valley, Game 7-Mount Union, Game 9-Linfield, Game 10, New England Patriots, Game 11-Pitssburgh Steelers...

Geesh...enough with the schedule...It's impossible to have every team in your league up to the calibre of the top two or three....Be careful of that yellow cake!

zach, I would say the bombers played a little tougher schedule.  Does it mean anything? No.  The nonleague teams IC played were tough teams and none of them could you call easy wins.  Were they as good as last year? No.  Could Union have gone 10-0 by playing those teams? Sure they could have....and Ithaca almost did too.  Bottom line, it should be a good game this weekend.  I dont think anyone has seen both teams live more than once.  The smack talk in here is pretty silly, but fun none the less..

Now, I am going to the Cabaret in Sagus.  Have a good night.

Let's give Jonny credit.  This is an example of a fan of another team I respect because he doesn't just foam at the mouth.  While it is full of opinion and lacks facts, he at least respects both sides of the argument.  GB15 could learn a lot from Mr. Utah.  I salute you sir.

Nope, there isn't one.  However, let me give you a lesson I've learned after being Editor of the school's newspaper, Sports Director of the school's radio station, at-large broadcaster of Union games on a commercial station and from being a sports junkie over the years...

There's a major difference between television broadcasters and radio broadcasters, especially in the case of "home-spun" broadcasters.  When there is a television broadcast owned by or directed toward a specific team, generally, it is much more subdued, as there is more allowance of the pictures to do the speaking.  Sure, there is a slant in such a case, but there is less opportunity for the slant.

On the other hand, radio is much more speech-intensive.  It is meant to somehow give a listener not able to attend the ability to view and feel like the person is there.  While people at the game might wear headphones, it's generally in order to get some additional perspective on the game.  Because of the nature of the additional speech, it has become more accepted that the radio broadcast will slant somewhat more than the same broadcast by a television station.  This is why when they play video clip highlights with an audio version of the call, they will place the successful team's radio broadcast version of the call...it breeds more excitement for the video clip being played.

In the case of Division III football, I think, with the exception of D3football.com's broadcasts, there will be a home slant to the broadcasts.  Otherwise, the other team wouldn't need a broadcast; they could just relay back the home team's broadcast.

I have never made a claim that I am not a Union fan.  Even after three years at Harvard after my Union experience, I never became as closely acquainted with Harvard athletics.  The football team treats me like family; the coaching staff treats me like family; the fans and parents treat me like family.  These broadcasts are FOR THEM.  If other people listen and enjoy them, then that's gravy for us.  However, at the end of the day, if nobody but Union faithful were to listen, I'd be fine with that because they are the people who matter most to me personally.  Again, I do appreciate others who listen and critique.  Just don't hold excitement on my part against me because I'm not going to hide it.

If this makes me a poor broadcaster, then, oh well, guilty as charged.  Nobody was happier than me Saturday at the ability to say, "The Union College Fighting Dutchmen will finish the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record," after RPI's onside kick attempt went out of bounds.  It took me 11 seasons to be able to say that.  Well worth the wait.

So, say what you will about me personally, folks.  It won't change how I carry myself on here or on the radio.

UOldManD -

Relax on the bulletin board material.  Let's win arguments with class, not with the obvious.

Grido03

Frank, I respect your response. I haven't heard a Union football broadcast. I feel that you are walking a fine line as broadcaster and a poster here. However, it seems as though you know your head from your rear (i mean that as a compliment).
It's buffoons and homophobes like Uold that cause me to make assumptions about other posters.

Grido03

Union89 - johnny most, yeah, biased - 'havlicek stole the ball!' But he was an absolute rarity. Being a homer is no way to work in Division 3 or move up past D3.

I agree, and I have heard a TON of homers, more every year it seems. If you think you've heard bad ones, I challenge you to tune into some of the WIAC or ASC games. Some of those broadcasts are borderline unbearable.

I would say this about Frank -- maybe he was just on his best behavior when I was on his broadcast for around half the third quarter on Saturday, but he didn't strike me as being an outlandish homer. Didn't seem to want to ID any of the RPI tacklers, but otherwise fine. :)

Agreed, but I think if you asked Frank, he has no aspirations to continue up the broadcast ladder.  He has that law degree to fall back on......
