TGP...
Just read in today's paper...I am in the Rochester area...that H and WS just announced a new capital campaighn for I think $160 Million or so...

Since it is RPI-Hobart Weekend...lets put that into perspective...

RPI's currnet campaign is for almost ten times as much as that...$1.4 BILLION...

So...what can we determine from that...???

Since there is a formula used by development offices that will give you a percentage of funds that Alumni will likely give vs. governmental and crporate gifting, RPI ALUMNI GIVE ABOUT 10 TIMES AS MUCH MONEY TO THEIR ALMA MATER THAN HOBART ALUMS!!!

From that...Can we extrapulate the following...

1- RPI ALUMS HAVE 10 TIMES AS MUCH DISCRETIONARY FUNDS TO PLAY WITH....

2- RPI ALUMS MAKE 10 TIMES AS MUCH AS HOBART ALUMS...

3- RPI ALUMS CARE MORE ABOUT THE FUTURE OF EDUCATION IN OUR COUNTRY THAN A LIBERAL ARTS SCHOOL LIKE HOBART...

4- RPI ALUMS HAD A BETTER EXPERIENCE IN TROY THAN HOBART ALUMS HAD IN GENEVA....(OUCH THAT ONE WOULD HURT!!!)

5- RED IS A BETTER COLOR THAN ORANGE...

Ok...Ok....i will stop there...but the reality is, $1.4 Billion is a lot to raise and that kind of a number is usually only attempted by the Major Institutions( Michigan, Stanford, etc...) and Ivy's....

Just another indication of Rensselaer's stature vs. the rest of the Liberty League competition....not another school in the LL or even the Empire League comes close to the academic standards and average starting salaries of a Rensselaer grad...

Last I checked, the AVERAGE starting salary out of Rensselaer was right around $55,000 dollars across all of the majors....not a bad start for a 21 year old...and if you stick around for grad school it goes up very nicely...

Bottom line...If you are looking for a very competitive football program, with a great career potential upside....and a football program that is run by someone with a lot of integrity....YOU CAN'T GET ANY BETTER IN ALL OF NY STATE!!!!

Respectively submitted with all due respect to the Pumpkin Head Nation...

LETS GO RED!!!!!!

Red Swarm to the West

When Hobart was founded in 1822, by the man who Yours Truly has ripped off as his screen name, he intended it to be kind of an Ag-Tech school for lack of a better modern equivalent.  It emerged into a medical school and seminary.

One of the reasons Hobart has such a low endowment is that we had a disproportionately large number of graduates become Episcopalian priests.  Then at the start of World War II, Hobart almost shut down for lack of male students.  That's when Hobart and William Smith went from being truly separate schools into the stupid "coordinate" model.  obart was saved by a) an influx of wealthy white chicks' daddies' money and B) the U.S. Navy dumped a bunch of money into Hobart in exchange for shark food.  Anyway, prior to WW2, too many alumni became clergy; and even though Episcopalians have mad cash, the priests themselves didn't.

But an odd thing happened after the war...a bunch of Hobart Alumni became super-wealthy.  After all, Hobart is a school where you go--not to study, not even to play football--but rather to rub elbows with other trustfund babies.  for example, Bill Scandling '49 started the SAGA food corporation which was later bought out by Marriott, and now goes by the name Sodexho-Marriott.  Bill dumped 49 million into Hobart before his death.

that's the problem.  he gave $49 million in the late 1990's.  Most other schools have had the benefit of having wealthy alumni since before WW2.  That thing called compound interest makes for a great endowment.  Look at Swarthmore, which has enough money so that every student could attend for free in perpetuity.

Now HWS produces too many public school teachers.  I think the move to offer an M.A.T. was a mistake.  Bart should have started a law school like Union did, or started an MBA program.  Problem: HWS profs are a bunch of marxist know-nothings.  Perfect for teacher-training.

RPI also has the advantage in that it teaches a useful curriculum that corportations LOVE to support.  HWS teaches bulls^^t.  If I were a corportate guru, I'd be damned if I gave HWS a single cent.  As it is, the Rev refuses to give what little he has because The Rev doesn't want my hard-earned cash going toward programs (academic and extracurricular) that The Rev thinks are damaging to the souls of students.

Having said that, I hope the immoral bastard Statesmen win.  The Rev sez: Bart 20-17.

(Yes, I did pull those numbers out of my hindquarters.)

P.S. to RSotW-- If red is really better than orange, then I think we would have sold out even more than we already have and Bart would have red and blue uniforms.

Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaamn!  The Rt Rev dropping some old skool knowledge on us heathens!!!

It appears to TPG that the Rt Rev must have actually read the gripping, page turner that is "A History of Two Colleges".

TGP thinks TGP still has a copy of that book somewhere - I either swiped it from the admissions office or while quietly tucked away in my honors "cage" (they literally were cages) writing my new age sensitive guy research thesis my senior year.

Unlike the Rt Rev, TGP still has faith in the ole Bart and the liberal arts (but maybe it was b/c I was an Econ major?  ODE muthasuckas!).

No doubt if the Rt Rev and TGP ever sit down at the bar again we will have a heated, yet interesting, debate over the pros and cons our alma mater.

BTW - TGP believes the COO of Yahoo! just sunk some dough into the school as did a couple of other alums with some sold corp action.

But TGP disgresses, may the best team win tomorrow (unless of course that's RPI) and your North Lotters - have a Cah Bahm (aka a Game 7) for TGP!!!

Holla!

Folks, let's cut the crap and get down to brass tacks.  RT never really heard of RPI in high school in Rochester, NY back in the late 80's other than the hockey team and something about a big-azz model train set in one of the dorms (which RT never saw in 6 years). Ironically enough, it came down to RPI and Hobart as RT's final 2 choices. RT asked "show RT the money" and RPI had a better financial aid package. Since RT didn't know anything about RPI, he asked some trusted adults who know their way around the professional world. The net of it is that RT was convinced RPI offered him a much broader set of opportunities, considering RT had zero clue what he wanted to do with himself after the paradise in scenic Troy, NY was over.

Had he gone to Hobart, RT was pretty much convinced he would've ended up a history or english major with a future teaching HS or writing for an encyclopedia company....not that these aren't honrable professions. The other chance at HWS for RT may have been to go on to law school but RT figured he could do that from RPI also. Today, RT can safely say that his BS & MBA from RPI definitely has opened doors in the field RT works and the geography he resides in. On the salary thing, RT doesn't have a good perspective because RT's in sales....so income is a variable thing driven by timing, luck, and talent (none of these in any particular order). All RT will say on that is that he leads a satisfied existence and probably helps the RPI surveys out.

...now back to the important stuff. The Rev couldn't have summed it up any better. The BIGGEST (or smallest, depending on how you measure it) problem HWS has is clearly in an area that can't be taught in the classroom. Fortunately at RPI, we boast a very large endowment. :)

Quote from: Tlm link=topic=4728.msg559640#msg559640........although I have once again noted that RPI grads have this impulse to give you their resumes..........but why not?........they attended an outstanding school.

Tlm. would you like RT to email his resume to you or would it be easier for RT to post it up on here? RT is dying to show it to you.....

Little side bar......

TGP is watching Oaks Christian vs. St. Bonaventure game on FSW (both are local SoCal HS that are nationally ranked).  Jimmy Clausen (the OC QB) has already thrown for 2 TDs (and a 2 pt) conversion and has over 100 yds passing in the FIRST QUARTER.

ND fans have got to psyched.  St. Bonnie's is in the SI top 10 nationally.  Absolutely smoking that D.

Also of note - Clay Matthews is the DC for Oaks!!  There are about 2-3 other former DI All Americans and/or NFL players on the OC coaching staff.

Man, must be nice.  My HS FB coach was still running the veer offense when I played.  I think we had 4 plays.

Start of 2nd Qtr
21 OC
0   St B's

Knightstalker

KS HS offense was the veer also, very effective because we had a small quick team.  Very east for KS at center, odd block to the right, even block to the left.  This was way back when you still had to keep your elbows in and fists closed for pass blocking or you got called for holding.

The Rev hopes some of you guys are planning on doing play-by-play posts of the RPI-Hobart game.

The Rev will be at work during the game, and would like to come home to a well-written narrative of today's Main Event.

Discuss.

If 'gro is around gro will post updates... got a big saturday planned. Well, um, actually a pretty nice little Saturday, we're going to go to Home Depot. Just recently changed... feeling nostalgic for the days of Troy.   I used to hate the nerds that complained that there were no girls. Those cats couldn't get laid in vegas with a bill gates bankroll.  Then there's that part of RPI we don't like to talk about... nerd couples.

For those that didn't go to RPI imagine this... Smart, ugly, socially inept guys meeting smart, ugly, socially inept girls.  During the day you would see nerd couples walking around campus holding hands, waiting for eachother outside of class, making out near that tree where the albino squirrels lived.  Then at night you would be terrified from their nerd moans as they made efficient calculated nerd love. It's been going on for years, see...

XREDDRAGON77

Nerd love.  Sounds priceless!
Taste It!
