RE: The Trop

A few good things about the Trop is that parking is free outside the stadium and you can bring beers and grills and whatever you want there.  Thats rare in most other ballparks Ive been too.  Then there is this bar called Fergs thats just outside the park that is one of the best ballpark bars Ive been too.

But on the negative side, the place is dark and unexciting.  And Im not too sure about public transportation to the game if you want to drink.  And they suck.

JQV

The Trop built three of the best ballparks in baseball.

It built new Commiskey, Safeco, and AT&T in SF.

All three teams were set to come to TB and turned the screws on their respective cities by using the vacant ballpark ready for immediate play to get funding for new stadiums.

When the franchise was awarded in 1995, there were two finalists.  The Outback Founders lead one group and had lined up public funding for a new park on the water in Tampa, the other group, lead by Vince Naimoli, didn't have stadium financing and was banking on use of the Trop.  Selig gave Naimoli the franchise because he had gotten screwed in the Giants deal.

The new owners have done a lot of work in the Trop and it is remarkably better inside.  The warehouse feel is gone.

Before baseball we used the Trop for the Lightning and called it the Thunderdome.  The Lightning made a few playoff appearances in that time and that is why we hold all NHL Playoff attendance records (because we played in a gigantic arena).

GRO thanks for looking that up.  I thought it was strange to build such an antiquated facility but I guess that makes sense now.

Born and raised.  I worked in PR for the Rays for 7 years.

it would seem like a logical move but the really good West Genny and F-M kids head for sunnier pastures (Virginia, Duke, G-town) and the more average (for those schools) end up starring for some of the D-III powers.  Also Lemoyne is now taking a lot of those kids b/c of the scholarships and recent success.  Hobart should look to Cornell recent success (with a hobart guy, if I am not mistaken) and look to Canada for stud Box players.

Cornell's HC is Jeff Tambroni '92.  Cornell is on a tear - they have a great shot to go all the way to the NCAA title this year.  Can't see anyone beating them (Duke and/or UVa are probably the only squads who have a shot).  Cornell's rise doesn't surprise TGP though - it doesn't hurt to be able to offer an Ivy education in the hotbed of Upstate Lax.

Bart actually has gotten a couple of Canadian kids via Salisbury School (CT) thanks to Salisbury's HC, Bobby Wynne '94 (former Lax and FB capt).  Two of Bart's leading scorers are both canucks (Daryl Veltman 41 pts on the year and UVM transfer Jamie Kirk 48 pts on the year).

Im still going to assume that top lax players at Hobart (like Cornell and Princeton) arent paying the full price and probably get half the tuition paid for by "academic" scholorships.  But even with the rest paid for by loans, guys are going to choose a full ride at Ohio St, Fairfield or Albany than go to Hobart.

Although notice not that many Cuse area players on the Hobart roster.  Thats a problem.

I think that Fayetteville-Manlius would be a natural feeder to a place like Hobart, but I only remember two or three guys from F-M the whole time I was there.

5. Jonny is right.  The south Bronx where the Stadium is and the new one being built is a real sketchy area of town.  Similar to Comiskey Park on the South Side of Chicago.  You follow the crowd.  Jonny what did you think of the Trop?  I've always wondered if that was built FOR the D-Rays in the mid-90s or was it pre-existing?  What a sterile behemoth of concrete...

Yankee Stadium isn't in the same league as Cominsky.  Yeah, the South Broxn isn't great but the Stadium is basically there by itself with a few bars and a bowling alley.  get off the 4 train and head to the stadium.  Its not rough in the immediate area.

It is going to be very strange when the new stadium and the old stadium are sitting right next to each other though...

A new stop on the Metro North railroad is going to be built right next to the new Yankee Stadium which will make it a lot easier for fans from the northern suburbs to get to a game.  The subway is also a very safe way to get to the game.

One does not encounter the locals at all when attending a game at the stadium.  It is an oasis within the blight.  Police presence is extremely high during games as well.

PBR...

man we finally get rid of that tool michael irvin and now espn hires keyshawn johnson to help cover the nfl draft....

Ok, WTFF and I, went to a wine tasting, which was a social event for school.  My buddy came there with us, and one of the guys in our class just happens to be gay, and a bar owner, and my buddy with us goes there from time to time, as do a lot of people in our class.  But LD11 still remained as one of the few who hasn't gone down to the place, and was starting to be classified in a negative light.  Anyway, the Gay Bar Owner (GBO) text messaged my buddy that this guy Fred who has a crush on my boy, was there.  SO, in an attempt to make my boy uncomfortable, we went down there, yes, to watch American idol on the big screen with a bunch of gay dudes.  Then Fred showed back up and was all over my boy.  It was nasty.  But none of us paid for any drinks all night, and LD11 kept an empty beer bottle next to him all night in case he had to smash it on the table and stab someone in their larynx.  LD11 did not wear leather undies, but WTFF gave LD11 the green light to grab her butt anytime he wanted...

Did you guys toast to Barbara Streisand's birthday yeasterday and more importantly, did you discuss fat azz Rosie O'Donnell's impending firing from 'The View'???

Theres still no reason for anyone to go to that part of the city for any other reason though.  And whos paying for the stadium?  I know the Yankees rent the current stadium for $1 a year.

What the Yankees should do is what the redsox have done.  Start buying realestate around the stadium and start building nice year-round sports bars and clubs and maybe some nice condos or something.

Anyone see any clips of the Wisconsin Tackle in action?  Pretty impressive.

And am I the only one who thinks the Pats should get another Olineman?  Nowhere around does it say they will pick one up with one of their first two picks.......

'gro

Gro is planning on constructing a hot dog stand on the citgo sign outside of fenway, using the heat generated from the sign to cook said dogs, and delivering them to fenway via a zip line.

if anyone wants to invest in "gro's super fantastic flying fenway dogs" just let me know.

Joe Thomas won't be around for the Pats.  He won't make it past the Bucs at 4 if he makes to the Bucs at 4.

superman57

the Pats should take a look at Josh Beekman of BC...they have had success with BC linemen, and plus he's local, and will be a steal in the third round or so
