I like how they dumped a load of dirt so they wouldn't have to actually dig and strain themselves for the groundbreaking.

This is just too good not to share with my LLPP pals:

Nice try by the coach, but this is an illegal play.  Can't find the exact rule... but something about attempt to deceive (ala the defense barking out the offense's calls).  Hopefully these weren't HS carded officials.  Either that or there is a rule in the rule book that allows the ref to "improvise" kind of like a spirit and intent kind of thing.

Coaches are always trying new versions of the sleeper play.  He must have told the refs ahead of time.  I would have told him he couldn't run it.  15 yard unsportmanlike on the coach if he tries it.

I didnt think the center could pick the ball up, turn around and give it to the quarterback.  That should be the illegal part.  Either way, if I were the losing coach, I wouldnt shake the hands of the other team, and I would tell my team why.

Im sure youve seen the play where the qb lines up in shot gun, then looks towards the sideline and talks to the coach, puts up his hands like he doesnt understand and then starts jogging over to the sideline while the center snaps it to the upback who throws it back to that qb who is now doing a wheel or fly.......thats cheap too though, I hate that crap.

I see 6 freshmen OL at 280+, 4 of them over 300lbs.  They might be 300 lbs of crap, but at least its impressive to bring in some size.

JU- you bring up a tremendous point and one Reg wants further clarification on.  At what point is the deception acceptable? For example, it used to be in the UFC that the only moves barred included gouging the eyes, that meant that nut punching was legal.  Reg watched one bout where there was a guy who threw 8 direct nut shots in a row and landed them.  Is that fair?

Reg definately agrees that this play was completely uncalled for and in poor taste....this was obviously the first play of the game (judging from the 1st down marker and field placement).  You better believe that I would pull my team aside and make these sure these guys payed dearly for the rest of the game, i.e. blocking until the whistle, bringing the wood and taking your hardest shot against these guys.

So, how far do you push the rules?

Rolevio doesn't understand why any youth/high school coach would call a play such as this, as it seems to take away from the goodsportsmanship and learning aspects of the game at that level.  Though the higher the level of football, the less Rolevio is offended to the point he doesn't care if teams call cheap plays in the NFL.  I've always had a  problem with it in baseball (hidden ball, etc) though, for some odd reason.

Yeah, Reg didn't even realize the level that these cats are at....they are at most the JV or Frosh squad.  Plus, look at the stands!  Are you kidding me??

My first thought was that it was an illegal play, but it was funny to watch. It did seem as if the ref was in on it, as he ran downfield with the QB. My grade school coach (a real tool) had us run a sleeper play where he's send in a sub and 2 would run off, one of whom would get to the sideline then turn downfield as the ball was snapped. The Parochial Athletic Association of the St. Cloud Diocese soon banned such shenanigans.

The center exchange must be backwards from the original spot of the ball.  He can hand/toss it sideways, over his head or through his legs.

The qb can't hear "sleeper play" is also illegal.  As soon as he makes a motion like he can't hear and the snap goes to upback it becomes an illegal play.  Blow the play dead, 15 yards on the coach.

The only play JT liked, which is now illegal in HS and college is the fumblerooski. If you had an OL than could fly, it had great potential.  It was still legal when JT was in HS.  It should still be a legal trick play.

'gro

gro's pop warner team ran the fumblerooski once and it worked. that's a borderline dirty play, but you are leaving the ball on the ground so it's a big risk. "Regular" trick plays or ok. Flea flickers, reverses, etc. Even direct snaps to the upback (where the QB acts like it went over his head) I can deal with.

The play in the vid is just corny deception. That coach can only use it once before the rest of the league finds out. If I were a coach in that league I'd make sure my nose tackle knows to blow up the center if he picks the ball up off the ground.

KS JV coaches once used the Center Eligible play as seen in the movie MASH.  The center (KS) reported to the ref as an eligible receiver, the line all lined up to the left of KS.  KS snapped the ball to the qb who was lined up under center and the qb pulled away but left the ball in KS hands.  The qb and line all blocked down to the left and KS just headed downfield with the ball.  We were in a 3rd and 25 at the time, KS made it 4th and about 4 after the play.  The DB's caught on right away but KS was big enough that it took three to take him down.

The opposing coach screamed and ranted but the refs said it was a legal play.

Just remembered another trick Fins' tool of a coach had. Fins at center would snap the ball to QB's hands, except Fins would keep the ball by his butt and to no one's surprise, miss his block. Then Fins would scamper up the middle until he tripped on his own feet about 5 yards downfield.

Edit: KS, just read your post after posting mine. I guess all geniuses played center. :D  +K to anybody who admits to being a center.

Knightstalker

+K to fins for being a former center and running the same play KS did.
