Whoa now fella.  Single sports can't move up because you might get scholarship athletes in one sport playing a 2nd sport and running shop (I guess this happened with Dayton track stars playing football when dayton was D3).

Gro knows his stuff, folks. This is spot on.

when you're a post patterns veteran, you pick up a few things.

Just to get a mental handle on the Reg/Gro smackdown.. what positions did you bad boys play.

Pretty boy Reg played the dirtiest of the pretty boy positions, FB.  Gro played ILB on the better side of the ball.

Reg claims to blow up all american LBs (which is true) but we played against some pretty good fullbacks too. The kid from union (laporta?) and even Fisher had a big ole 250 pounder playing FB. You never saw gro on his back did you?  Besides, all the linemen were more concerned with trying to block Applejack.

It's Wednesday, and if StLarry remembers correctly, that means it should be time for some tasty tidbits for your viewing pleasure to help the midweek doldrums:

Well the Upstate coaches have Alfred tied with Union and ahead of RPI and only a few points behind Hobart (a team they lost by 1 TD last year and who supposedly lost all these starters)  I dont think predicting Alfred to be that high is that rediculus.

But he should have backed it up you are right.

This whole thing is a silly crapshoot year to year when it comes to preseason predictions other than the usual suspects. The East Region is always wide open. Case in point, the beasts of the east, Rowan, laid an egg this past weekend so that threw a wrench into things.

Hobart will toil in the ranks of middle-tier this year in the LL. Their run is over. Phone it in. It will be RPI & Union slugging it out w/ UR sniffing at 3rd, followed by the Pumpkin-faces. RPI will finish higher than Alfred...phone that in too. Do it while you're on the same call as the first phone-in to save some connection charges.

Once again, RT asks the E8'ers if there's some sort of complex there. Why do you feel the need to come here and justify your rankings? Has the LL made a field trip to the E8 board to talk smack? RT knows enough useless stuff to put him on Jeopardy but there's a few things he knows for SURE: Alfred wouldn't be the top team in the LL,  Fisher won't make it past the first round of the playoffs (if they get there), and RT's fantasy team will be mantastic....

I dont think its about justifying rankings.  But if anyone predicts Alfred over the top 3 LL teams in here, you would think someone just accused Reg of having a weak 17 year old bench press or something.

U89 feels that in past weeks, Utah has been acting a bit odd.  Might he be playing the fence....is he a spy??  The next time LD goes to a Pat's game with Utah, U89 says we capture him and toture him until he unloads all the E8 secrets!!!!!!

Nah.  JU is in the RT camp where I dont really care about leagues. (I liked it better without them in upstate anyway).  Then IC could play whoever they wanted to and still keep some good rivalry games (Hobart and St. Lawrence).  Ithaca not playing Hobart is stupid.

But U89 I have come around.  That 2005 Union team would beat any 1980s Union team easily.  I think its the LL rubbing off on me.

Whoops.  Saw the blue and white uniform, and didn't care about much else after that.  Guess if I'd paid attention to detail I would have seen the horse shoe.  Oh well.

StLarry!  How's everything in SC?  MIOH hopes you don't miss Payson Hall & Canton, NY too much.  Any plans on making it back for a Larries contest this year?

Re: FB's

Where have they gone..?

Stim misses the days of ISO football

Seems every team I see now (even in HS) runs some variation of that mutant of the Run and Shoot -the Spread.  No huddles, direct snaps 80% of the time and the inside WR screen, shovel pass or bubble screen as "running" plays ala Texas Tech, Hawaii even yes RPI is the norm.  Even when they do hand off the ball its zone blocking and misdirection.

Maybe I am old fashioned but it seems the teams that line up in an I or offset I are a rarity.  Now its 4 wideouts, single back or even no backs (or even a TE lining up next to a tackle).

FBs and are IMHO are underappreciated for what they can do on a football field.  No they usually don't run a 4.5 (excpet for those genetic freaks that play D1 or in the NFL) but they can do things that the 5'10" burners can't.

Maybe some day it will revert back.... sadly I kinda doubt it

MIOH,
Chucktown is all it can be, beaches, bars, girls...StLarry definitely does not miss the winters in Canton.  Probably won't be able to get back to SLU this year though, still stuck in grad school.  Where are you these days?  Heard you moved on, but didn't hear where.  Don't recognize half the Payson people anymore.

PBR...

stimulator who knows it might...kinda of think of it as the 3-4 vs. 4-3 defense they come in and out  of style....run and shoot was big in the 80s then everyone learned how to defense it (blitz like crazy and knock out the qb or drop 8 and drop the hammer on the little wr's so they end up w/ alligator arms) but now run and shoot is coming back again especially w/ how app st. uses it

Gro is still at playing weight hoping the NFL goes to a 3 5 3 scheme.  With the huge lack of linebackers, he is almost a shoe in!

That is why you stay at playing weight, right Gro?

No public service message for Reg just a longing to see football where the winner of the collision btwn tackles has some place in the game..

Seems like drive blocking by O lineman and smashing the LB by the FB (or vice versa gro!) is a lost art.  Believe me the Stim is not against spreading the field to exploit the D on but I watched Tulsa play last Thurs night and it was more like a BB game than FB.

BTW if you were a coach would you ever throw the ball wide backwards ala bubble screen or to the back coming out of the backfield who retreats behind the QB.  Just a disaster waiting to happen. Drives me crazy to see teams throw the ball 20 yards - and slightly backwards.  Throw the bubble screen just don't make it a lateral.

Guess I'll have to catch Springfield at some point and see a team run the ball .... alot.
