Ummmm - while we're at it with news links today, ARE YOU F-ING KIDDING ME?!  You get one winning season, and that gives you the right to taunt our military like a bunch of classless pigs?!  Gimme a F-ING break.

As a first season Rutgers season ticket holder, I was appalled.  I don't know where this attitude comes from.  Either the students are complete idiots or stoopid azz liberals. I sit right next to the visitors tunnel, and a few sections away from the Rutgers students.  I was high fiving the Navy players in and out of the tunnel.

I am currently writing a letter to Schiano suggesting that he:

1) Admonish the student body publically

2) Have the Rutgers players and coaches join the military players (Army/Navy) at the end of the game when they play their school anthems.

Does this make any of it right?  I think it's extreme when it's being done toward our armed services schools, and it reflects a pretty bad problem.  Just acting like it's part and parcel of drinking and rooting for your team is a bit lame, no?

John McGraw

I've heard worse than that in the stands at Cortaca Jug. And frankly, there's probably a lot worse than that at many other schools around the nation. Does that condone it? Absolutely not, it's just what's out there.

Personally, I have no problem with the booing and saying "you suck" to the other team. It's college athletics. The other chants, (not including F-U Navy)I'm personally OK with, though there's lots of other things you can say to people without swearing. Though some chants or things you yell aren't as nice as others.

If your take your child/children to a game and you don't want them to hear that type of language, don't sit near the students. And if unfortunately they do hear it, explain your kids that that type of language isn't appropriate. Same with if they see it on a t-shirt perhaps.

I have no problem with people booing the Navy football team either. Does that mean I don't respect them? No, of course I respect them. Having read John Feinstein's wonderful book, The Civil War, I have the utmost respect for what they go through. At the same time, football is still football and booing the opponent is something that's perfectly natural.

Saying "F-U Navy," that crosses the line and should not be tolerated. I think the students should be reprimanded somehow, but you're painting a large swath over what was probably a group of stupid, drunk idiots, who thought they were being cool.

frank...when they are on the football field it is a game and they are the opposing team... what are we supposed to sit back and let Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard...etc win just because they are armed services.... do I think that in every game involving these teams that there should be tents sent up to send letter and goods to the troops...yes do I think every game should involve a moment of silence yes of course...but fans should not change their taunts just because it's navy.. do chants need to be modified to avoid curse words yes

Let the players on the field worry about winning and losing such games -- it's not the fans' job to somehow affect the outcome through such tactics.  And since such tactics are extraneous, then, yes, I do believe that we are supposed to sit back and pay some level of respect to these schools.  If this were to happen at Union when they face USMMA or (when they used to face) USCGA, I would've been the first to throw off my headsets and call out the spectator(s) doing it.  The last thing I want a soldier representing me and my fellow Americans on a battlefield thinking is about some azzhole in New Jersey who couldn't restrain themselves for two seconds to at least become creative with their chants.  Sorry, Superman, but I think that when we go beyond simple chanting and cheering, there are special rules that should be recognized for armed services academies.

superman57

Frank... I would have no issue starting a thank you navy chant before the game or after the game is decided...but when they are on the field they are still a strong opposing team...unlike most of the other armed forces schools...navy is decent

God forbid, how about concentrating on chanting support for your team in such circumstances?  Would that be so hard?

it's football, these guys are tough... and the military guys are extra tough.  Keep it clean for the younger fans in the stands. There are many ways to get into a players head without dropping F bombs.

Frank, speaking as someone who served with several Navy officers who either played basketball or football at Annapolis, most wouldn't want different treatment because they are playing for Navy.  Most I knew would just think, well that is how they treat everyone, who cares they are not the ones hitting us.

The foul language can be done away with.  He!! we used to chant "Navy Sucks" over and over again during the Army Navy game when I was in the Navy.  We would go down to the boat to watch even if we didn't have duty.  Enlisted men and chiefs used to root for Army because we always bet a keg on the game with our Cap'n and the officers.

A keg was the standing bet with the officers.  Softball games, football games, basketball and any other thing we could think of to compete.  We would then have a party or a big picnic/cookout to drink the keg.
The enlisted could pay off with PBR, Miller or Bud, the officers always paid off with Heineken, Becks or something like that.

"In the end we will survive rather than perish not because we accumulate comfort and luxury but because we accumulate wisdom"  Colonel Jack Jacobs US Army (Ret).
