ECAC Potential Playoff Teams (Declared as of Last Thursday's Deadline)

1(*). 10-0 - Curry College (NEFC)
1(*). 8-1 - Coast Guard Academy (NEFC)
2. 8-1 - Plymouth State University (NEFC)
3/4(**). 8-1 - St. John Fisher College (E8)
5. 7-1 - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (LL)
3/4(**). 7-2 - Alfred University (E8)
6(***). 7-2 - Cortland State (NJAC)
3/4(**). 7-2 - Hartwick College (E8)
6(***). 7-2 - Hobart College (LL)
6(***). 7-2 - Ithaca College (E8)
---------------------------------------------------
6-3 - Bridgewater State College (NEFC)
6-3 - University of Rochester (LL)
5-3 - Union College (LL)
5-4 - Nichols College (NEFC)

Generally, the Top 6 eligible teams that have not qualified for the NCAA Tournament will be selected.

* - NEFC Championship game will determine one of these teams as an AQ from Pool A.

** - One of these schools will win AQ from Pool A.  The two others may win a Pool C bid, but for now, we count them in the ECAC rankings.

*** - Tied.  However, Cortland and Ithaca play each other.  Hobart could still win Pool C bid or LL title.

The East Region Top 10's Playoff Paths:

No. Name                             In-Region    Overall
---------------------------------------------------------
1.  The College of New Jersey          8-1         8-1

Already a Pool A team (NJAC Champion).

2.  Curry                              10-0        10-0

May already be in tournament, even at 10-1.  For a Pool C bid, things that would help would be a loss by RPI, Hobart, Cortland and/or Alfred.

3.  St. John Fisher                    8-1         8-1

A win against Alfred would sew up a Pool A or Pool C bid.  A loss would place it on the bubble for a Pool C bid.  It would almost require a Hartwick loss.  Additional scenarios that would help would be RPI, Hobart, Curry and/or Cortland losing.

4.  Rensselaer                         7-1         7-1

A win against Union would guarantee a Pool A or Pool C bid.  However, a loss would place it on the bubble for a Pool C bid.  Hobart would not deter a Pool C bid from RPI either way, as it would either win the LL or would have 3 losses under this scenario.  Scenario would be helped by losses by Alfred, Cortland and/or Widener.

5.  Hobart                             7-2         7-2

A win against Rochester would virtually guarantee a Pool A or Pool C bid.  Hobart would be aided by a Curry win.  A loss would place Hobart out of Pool C contention.  It is pretty much in control of its own playoff destiny, though, as it seems to be in the lead for a Pool C bid.

6.  Cortland State                     6-2         7-2

Cannot win a Pool A bid, and needs help for a Pool C bid.  This would almost require a win by Curry and losses by RPI, Hobart and SJF.  A loss would place Cortland out of a playoff slot.

7.  Widener                            6-2         7-2

Already a Pool A team (MAC Champion).

8.  Hartwick                           7-2         7-2

Win and SJF win gives Hartwick E8 Pool A slot.  However, Alfred win would make Pool C bid tough.  Needs help from losses by RPI and Hobart, a win by Ithaca over Cortland and Curry to win the NEFC Championship.  Would be out of playoffs with a loss, however.

9.  Ithaca                             7-2         7-2

Needs a lot of help for a Pool C bid, even with a win.  Specifically, would need RPI and Hobart to lose, Curry and SJF to win and potentially a loss by Hartwick and/or other strong out-of-region two-loss teams.

10. Alfred                             7-2         7-2

Alfred controls its own E8 Pool A destiny.  With a loss, however, Alfred is eliminated.  Alfred is not in Pool C contention.

Your faithful ATR East columnist was doing his duties as a columnist and was in the epicenter of the RPI-Union rivalry: At a media luncheon at Union College for this Saturday's game.

Players from both teams were there and Coach Audino and Coach King definitely have their teams prepared.

The Shoes also made an appearance as well, but alas like the Stanley Cup, I refuse to touch it because I was not fortunate enough to play in this terrific rivalry.

On a semi-related note, the luncheon was held at the new athletic center... a gorgeous (Yes I just used that word for something other than cheerleaders ;) ) facility.

What kind of wine and cheese did you get served for lunch?  Did you wear your sweater vest or did they give you a house sweater vest to wear before they would let you in?

TGP wishes he shared the Tank's confidence that Hobart "is pretty much in control of its playoff destiny", but is encouraged by the Regional rankings and the fact that RPI has struggled to win at FB field.  Have to beat those Beez first though.

No wine. There was some cheese, but I didn't partake ;)

No sweater vests either... suits and button down shirts for all involved.  ::)

A HUGE +K to "MANNY MOE AND JACK"  pbr had a flat tire when he came out of work today....pbr rolls into pep boys w/ the little donut wheel on and pep boys throws a plug in it and has pbr out the door in 2 minutes...anyone notice when your changing a tire people dont know how to react to you? pbr works in a building w/ ~ 1000 people in it (not like u cats working from home) and the guys kinda walk by and look at yeah and almost feel obligated to say "everything ok?" and reluctantly ask "need any help?" yeah sure pbr just wants to work on a nascar team and is practicing...u tools...girls either look in awe in that you know how to change a tire or they look away pretending not to see you not wanting to get their hands dirty. luckily pbr works in jeans and a shirt so no biggie changing a tire...

Superman Just heard Coach King on the radio, apperantly RPI has not beaten Union at Frank Bailey Field since 1992

If you look very closely, you see the lineman-gloved hand of RT on the left helping to hoist said 1992 Shoes as we took it to the U at home. RT didn't realize that was the last time RPI won over there...guess that's right upon further reflection. RT will stay limber on the hill in case his services are required....

super must say that he was impressed with the Kinger...I missed Audino, but King praised Union and said that he thought the game would be in the mid 20's

You're the only dood on the board that doesn't know & accept that '57 can't spell.

Poor grammar and horrible spelling... it's just how he rolls.

another typical Union controversy...

IN DISPUTE: The two schools dispute the series record ... The Dutchmen claim a 78-22-4 series advantage ... Rensselaer claims an 11-4 win in 1886, the first meeting of the series, while Union says the Dutchmen won, 4-0, that year ... In 1888, Rensselaer has record of a 5-4 win ... Union claims no game was played.

Ok..so we have established that there were alot of safeties in the late 1800s....Hell, RT will even acknowledge that maybe each side some loose interpretation of scoring since football was still a relative work-in-progress in America. But the fact that Union has no record of a game in 1888?? WTF?! Were they drunk and forgot? Did RPI play the Schenectady Teacher's College and think it was Union???

RT... that bit in italics sounds like my story from last year's Saratogian... Also, RT, touchdowns were worth 4 points in the late 1800s... explaining the 5-4 scores.
There's some dispute on a bunch of games in the rivalry.
