Speaking of coaches contracts... this is a report from last year. Make sure to click the database link on the top you can read through some actual coaches contracts

Nice find Gro' - thanks. It's pretty cool they released some of the actual contracts.

Can you believe Paterno is paid as little (relatively speaking) as he is? His was recently made public --- ~$600k if I recall correctly. Maybe that is just base, and doesn't include "other income".

Think it was closer to $500k, and there were no real incentives built in.  It's pretty amazing considering how much JoPa and his wife have given back to the school.  I think they gave a large portion of money to build a new library a few years back.

Great find Gro....

I just randomly picked out Virginia Head Coach Al Grohs contract and noticed a few things that I would never really think of...

- 8 season tickets to the basketball games

-10 season tickets to the football games

-  "The coach may make reasonable use of the University's aircraft and vehicles as is necessary to carry out his duties......."

-  "The university will reimburse any annual dues (excluding and initiation fees) required to maintain the Coach as a member of a local athletic or country club of the Coach's choice"

Yup, even the women's hoop coach at Holy Cross gets a free membership to Worcester Country Club...

They have to let her in though (and him) still I guess....

Tags I always got the feeling that the State has wanted him to retire for a long time.  They probably keep his salary low for a reason.  Maybe the Penn St. fans on here (UPBRme) can fill us in on that one.

(And all the state schools coaches are public record and have to be available.  Notice that ND isnt on there and some other private schools.  Plus some federal tax returns were gotten on some of the coaches if you notice at the bottom)

his salary income finally came out after a LONG court battle and appeal after appeal...basically no one in Pa really cares other than a jerk sports writer (david jones) at a 2 bit rag newspaper that has a huge grudge against joe. joe's salary is just over 500,000 he has lots of other revenue streams hence while he was able to donate millions towards the new library at psu. the reason joe' s salary is so low relatively speaking is because he has for years declined salary increases and told officials to take that money and raise his asst's pay. joe has had for years some of the highest paid asst's in football. these guys are making hundreds of thousands of dollars/year. hence why there is always so little turnover on joe's staff. factor in the cost of living in state college and life is pretty good for those guys. that being said there is a real under current and 2 sides forming of those who want joe to stay. feeling he is what's right about college athletics. academics first, he suspends/expels players for major infractions. he has built psu into the university it is today. and there are those who think the team has slipped the last 10 years and arent happy w/ 8 and 9 win seasons they want to compete for national championships.

He probabally doesn't want any more money then....especially if he is blowing it on stuff like books.

I bet he has an awesome vision plan in his contract.  His glasses are like an inch and a half thick!

PBR...

reg come on dont be taking cheap shots at joepa....no matter how senile he is...

'gro

can joepa wear those glasses in direct sunlight... would his face melt?

Re: contract
He probably gets a percentage of the programs revenue (tickets, ads, apparel) like most of the other big time coaches from that report.

Johnny, those state schools coaches get paid millions because the program generates millions. If a team can sell out at 100,000 seat stadium game after game thats money in the bank.

PBR...

PBRWarriors are going to have to take down 2 faithful in the LLPPSCFJFFL as they are both in his way to the championship and the LLPP shoes!! sorry LD and Gro its nothing personal just bizness!!! (this is based on current playoff projections)

Yea I think this has been talked to before.

But I remember seeing somewhere that only like 10% of division 1 programs acutally make money for the college (or state).

yup JU...psu's football program funds every other sport program. sure some make money other years but very little. it allows schools to have fencing, water polo etc basically team sports that normally couldnt be afforded.

EDIT: Pettite confirms he will return to the yanks next year....guess this is their plan B since they didnt want to get into a bidding war for santana w/ the bosox

If the sox get Santana, next year is over.  I think the Yanks have to do everything possible to get that guy.  You need an ace to win a world series plain and simple.....

PBR...

the yanks get pettite and add santana they will be very tough next year. pbr imagines w/ andy go to the yanks the bosox will now make a huge push for santana last thing they want is the yanks adding those two players

Re: Contracts.

They should do this in Division III. Wouldn't you guys want to see what guys like Joe King and John Audino make? I'll bet they get their country club dues paid for to Saratoga National and Pinehaven, respectively.

Re: Santana.

The nicest thing about the whole deal is that the Sox don't NEED him. The Sox have lots of quality pitching and a star for the future in Ellsbury. The Yank-me's really do need a guy like Santana.

EDIT: Couldn't tell the difference in there and their this morning.

well that is who the bosox are offering...lester or ellisbury....

the only reason joepa's salary got published is because he is coaching at a state university and more importantly according to the judge was his pension was funded by pa. taxpayers thus it should be open to the public for scrutiny....his assts. opted for a private funded pension not backed by taxpayers so they didnt have to open the books on them thus no one really knows what his assts. make just that people in the know have given ballpark figures and its significant....
