Ralph,
KS has always thought that a flat tax across the board was the right idea.  It is the fairest way to tax the people, everyone is paying the same.  It would be a lot less than MKS and KS pay now.

As far as energy, KS thinks that by say 2015 all homes whether single family or townhouse/condo units should have some sort of green energy alternative built in.  Say solar panels in the roof or a windmill in the appropriate areas.  This would reduce the need for oil in one area and help conserve oil for use in other areas.  Not a final solution but a good step in the right direction.  In exchange for a property tax break the local utility would not have to buy back power from the home owner.

Not trying to piss off Pat with the political talk... i guess a flat tax would be fair... but is that something that would come out of your paycheck every week? or at the end of the year?
Lots of questions, not a ton of answers...

Ralph,
You present a very good argument...definitely very helpful for someone who really doesn't full understand all the nuances of the process.

The primary thing that is wrong with the money article, is that it will give him an extra $900.  Sure.  But then windfall taxes, cap and trade, corn for fuel will take more back.  And everyone on Wall Street is shaking in their boots over Obama's doubling of the capital gains taxes from 15% to 28%.  Should Obama get elected expect a massive sell off (possibly of epic proportions) before January 2009.  Investors would rather pay 15% now then risk paying 28% later.  Obama will blame Bush, but it will be Obama's fault.

Raising the capital gains tax will wreck an already struggling economy.  When it was pointed out to Obama in a debate that lower capital gains always leads to more commerce and more tax revenue, Obama said he'd raise the capital gains out of "fairness".  Fairness is socialist/marxist speak for redistribution of wealth.

When capital gains were cut in 1981, 1997, and 2003 tax revenues rose 49%, 49%, 88%.  When capital gains were raised in 1986 tax revenues fell 44%.  People buy and sell more when capital gains taxes are lower, creating more taxable transactions.  More buying and selling creates more commerce and more jobs which creates more employees who pay taxes.

Obama believes in policies that have failed around the world for hundreds of years.  It is his elitist attitude that he is some how more enlightened. It makes Obama think he can pull off his version of socialism.  The emperor has no clothes.

dewcrew, I am in favor of a single rate take each paycheck.  Withholding was implemented during World War II to keep a steady flow of revenue coming in for the war effort.

In purest sense, I think that there should be no taxes on groceries and health and medical purchases.

(The farmers and druggists and doctors and nurse should pay taxes on wages, but I think that the cleanest system is one that takes all of the incentives out of health.  Is there a more valuable incentive to the person than great health?  The incentives that accrue to individuals who make health care policy and taxation  may want to demonstrate their value to the system by "incentivizing" health.  Do those helath care policy wonks actually cure people?  If central health care policy is so good, why do so many Canadians come to the US?  But I digress...)

No tax on milk, bread or fruit, but taxes on a manufactured product like diet soft drinks.  No tax on ibuprofen or aspirin or ampicillin, but taxes on consumer items that can be bought in the drug store.  You need food and drugs to live and stay healthy.

I am very "free-market" on most items.  Get the tax perturbations out of the way and let's figure out how to live more cost-effectively.

As for KS's thoughts on "green", I saw that Congress wants to put a moratorium on solar projects.  That raises the big red flag that some congressmen (Senator Harry Reid, Democrat Nevada) and women (Rep. Nancy Pelosi, Democrat, California) are hearing that the lobbyists don't have the tax incentives aligned to take advantage of this federal largesse.

Solar Moratorium

I think that getting the "laws" and Congress and the inertia of waiting for the final form of the tax bill that the lobbyists would construct will do more harm than good.  With the growing world need by 1.3 Billion Chinese and 1.1 Billion Indians who want to become middle class (you know, a washer/dryer, a microwave, a TV set with satellite and a refrigerator), we will need all of the energy the world will produce.  The market forces will promote the innovations to become more energy efficient!

Let me sell my excess electricity to the grid.  Connect my exercise cycle and my solar panels to the electrical grid.  I am all for it!   :)

Ralph,

And had Ted Kennedy received government health recently, he'd be dead from lack/denial of care.  In government healthcare everyone has "coverage" but not everyone gets care.

And if Canadian healthcare is so great, why are the doctors leaving in droves for the US?

Is It NBA Or NFL?

36
have been accused of spousal abuse

7
have been arrested for fraud

19
have been accused of writing bad checks

117
have directly or indirectly
bankrupted at least 2 businesses

3
have done time for assault

71,
repeat 71
cannot get a credit card due to bad credit

14
have been arrested on drug-related charges

8
have been arrested for shoplifting

21
currently
are defendants in lawsuits, and

84
have been arrested for drunk driving
in
the last year

Can
you guess which organization this is?

Give
up yet? . Scroll down,

NBA or NFL

Neither,
it's the 435 members of the
United StatesCongress

The
same group of Idiots that crank out
hundreds of new laws each year
designed to keep the rest of us in line.

Can we confirm that 84 have been arrested for drunken driving in the last year?  I mean, my rep. Barney Frank would never do something like that......

But here are some problems I see with this crazy economy...

-Guys like Donald Trump can declare "bankrupcy" when one of his ventures fails.

-I work with some guys that make 100K a year and now have to figure out how to pay their kids 40K a year tuition because people that make over 80K usually get 0 in financial aid.  These guys are paying 20K+ chunks a year to pay cash on their kids tuition bills.(note to self.....JUs future kids will get some sort of scholorship....

-JU just paid $92 to fill up his truck (at $4.24 a gallon.  There are places around Boston that are still $4.08 and even $3.99 at the intersection of Gallivan Blvd and Dorchester Ave.  I think U89 lives a few blocks north of there)

-A grande cup of starbucks coffee has been the same over the last 5 years (I think)

-A super grande chicken burrito at Annas Taqueria has gone up $1 over the last 3 years.

-And as tough as the economy is in most areas, I just noticed around Boston how many frickin womens parlors there are around.  I can not believe how much women spend on their hair, feet, hands, eyes, and skin.  I mean, these places flood the boston market.

Yeah, pg's seen this everywhere ... One of those horribly annoying "guy from boston" videos also used this bit.  People will believe anything they see on the internet.

Knightstalker

KS received that in an email from a friend and thought it was funny, it was relevant to something else that had been posted and KS thought others would get a laugh out of it.  KS also trusted the person who sent it, she usually does not send anything like this she has not checked first.

Besides with all the other garbage on the internet, how do we know Snopes.com isn't FOS also?

PG is sure sure he probably would at least like to interject some of his opinions too...  Of course opinions are like a-holes, everyone has one.   ;)

As for Snopes, it's at least more believeable   Because they go to the effort of providing some sort of evidence.

One gas station about 3 miles from JT house, went all cash.  $3.68 for regular on Friday.  JT filled up early, drove by later and there was about 10 cars line up in each direction of pump.  Now he's in the news.  He was in the paper today.
