Union 14, Springfield 0 at halftime.
So Union wins at Springfield, 24 - 14 (don't quote me).

RPI wins at where-the-heck-is Endicott, 36 - 7.

Let's see those two teams undefeated at noon on Nov. 1--fitting for the final Dutchman's Shoes game ever to be played on the '86 Field.

Nice to see my karma drop 20 in the offseason.

Endicott College is actually a gorgeous campus overlooking the ocean in Beverly, MA on the North Shore of Boston.  It's an amazing campus with some very nice facilties.  However, it's not in the melting pot metropolis of Troy, NY or actually anywhere near the amazing landscape of upstate NY, where we all know that nice things go to die....  Yes, Endicott has a horrible football program, and their educational valor may not be able to rank with RPI, or anyone else in the LL for that matter, but to say 'where-the-heck-is' is just being stupid and blatantly ridiculous.  Maybe a geography lesson would be a nice addition to your next settlement.

Dutchmen come away with an impressive victory to start the season. Union D played an excellent game throughout. This game actually could have gotton ugly early but the Dutch O was unable to convert on some great opportunities in the first Q. The O has some serious potential but needs to work on its consistency and ability to finish on drives. Springfield is definately young and not the same w/out Sharpe. Yet Carter (springfield QB) showed some great potential as well! Great victory for Union to begin the season. It was a great game to be at!

UnionDad

Agree.  Union dominated everywhere but on the scoreboard.  Two bad snaps and a sack hurt them badly in the red zone.  Could have easily been 28 0 after the first half.  Union D did a great job vs the option which has given them problems in the past.  One area of concern...punt returns.  I don't think the PR caught a punt all night.  Maybe it was the lights.

dlippiel & UnionDad,

Thx for the updates.  U89 is not yet quite ready to start pounding the Union drum here in '08 in that Springfield seems to have a pretty weak squad this year and may not have been the test they have been in the past.

Having seen it live, would you guys agree?

UnionDad

No question that Springfield is a young team that lost a lot to graduation.  However, I have seen Union's  D have problems with the option in the past and they bottled it up very well.  U had a lot of ?? on D due to graduation and they seem to have answered them positively in game #1.  On offense I think they will be a grind it out type of offense, capable of moving the chains and controlling the clock.  There is some big play capability.  40 yard bomb was dropped by a WR last night.

They just have to learn to limit mistakes in the red zone and finish drives.

Union could surprise

UnionDad

P.S. Springfield ran up 500 yards of offense in their first game vs some tomato can

stimulator

Predicted U winning 24-14 ...lucky guess.

Remember, that "tomato can" (Fitchburg State 0-2) put 27 points on the board and 540 yards of offense against Springfield.  I went to the game and They (FS) do have a decent offense with a pretty talented back.

I know each game is different as it unfolds ...  stats can be misleading ... a few plays here or there (as you mentioned dropped pass etc.) can influence the stats.

It will be interesting to see how Union O plays against a more stout D as the weeks go by.  Too early to tell whether they can live by the run and hope the QB can hit a few plays to occasionally keep the sticks moving.

Caught the final score that Hobart won 28-21.  Terrible showing by the defense to give up so many yards rushing (200+), but TGP will take the win.

They made the stops when they had to TGP guesses.

I caught the 2nd half from the Boz.  The rushing yards were misleading, b/c Dickinson really does not throw the ball, even when behind.  But they were better, and much bigger up front, than I expected.  A lot bigger than our D-line.   I would not be surprised if they won 7 or 8 games this year.

Bart seemed a bit pass happy in the 2nd half, don't you think?

There he goes. One of God's own prototypes. Some kind of high powered mutant never even considered for mass production. Too weird to live, and too rare to die.

I would have to say that the Springfield O definately was not what it has been. In their defense they are very young but I think that last year, being somewhat dissapointing for them (Sharpes senior year and starting out the season ranked #9) may have carried over. It might be a little while before the pride are back to where they have been in years past. With that said I think the Union D has almost always had difficulty stopping the option. Last night that really was not the case. Like I said earlier if the offense was able to finish the score would have been much more lopsided. I wouldn't beat the drum yet either though. They have a huge game next week with the mules (#8). If they can win that then let us all beat away. Anyway it was a great night to root for the Dutch, the team played very hard throughout.

I didn't think I had to spell things out letter by letter.

My point was twofold: both RPI and Union won

  • non-league games
  • on the road.

Since this is the Liberty League board, I assumed that all posters--and most lurkers, even--would know where the Liberty League teams are located, even when their school names, e.g. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and Union, don't reveal their locations.

Springfield's name identifies its location.  Not so with Endicott.  I don't doubt that Endicott's campus is lovely, but that's irrelevant to the point of my post.
