Is UNION an acronym? What does it STAND for?

Underage New Englanders Inebriated On Nott Street

dlippiel

dlippiel thinks the Dutch have a chance to win this weekend. I think if this game was being played later in the year Unions chance would increase. I think there will be a few key factors  for Union that will be intricate to them winning and/or staying competitive. Union must finish in the red zone and finish often. If they get the ball in the red zone early they must score each time. Blown chances vs the Mules will equal disaster for Union. Second the secondary must prove themselves right away and force the mules to the ground where the Union LB's and D line will hopefully continue the success they had last week. Third I think the Dutch must use Gourrier more whether it be long routes, outs, and slants and let him make plays as well as get Coney a lot of touched. Last (and I'll shut up) the line must protect Catellier. Not just pocket protection but protect him from some of the hits he took against Springfield. He got nailed more than a few times and occasionally looked shaken up. I think with time and a solid pocket he can exploit the D and get some of Unions skilled players more involved. So yes think Union has a chance but I think that a lot of things need to go right fro it to happen.

gro would like to thank desean jackson for not knowing where the endzone is... giving westbrook an easy 1 yard score.

desean is lucky coach king is not there to jack him up... because a bonehead play like that would bring an epic jack up from the kinger.

right now futures pointing to a 11K open but they are sinking fast and still ~1hr. to open....armageddon may truly be here....there is an acceleration of shoes dropping right now and you are going to see several more very large investment banks fail.

Indeed.  Hopefully the washout comes soon rather than lingering through 2009.

On the upside, DP can now buy financial Vipers with a dividend yield competitive with many bonds. That allows me to be rather patient.

AUPepBand

Hey, any Larries lurking out there? Pep is wondering whether to make the five-hour trip to Canton (a lot depends on band members' interest) or set up a flatscreen at the library cafe or seminar room for any interested AU fans who may want to watch a videocast of the game. Has anyone watched the St. Lawrence videocast in the past? Is it decent?

Hey now... Just because I can't spell doesn't mean that I don't know that Union is not an acronym

You're the only dood on the board that doesn't know & accept that '57 can't spell.

Poor grammar and horrible spelling... it's just how he rolls.

JT

Almost a perfect last game for JT at Yankee Stadium.  Great weather, good game, Mariano closes.  Yanks 4-2 over White Sox.  Jeter is one hit away (1,270) from being the all-time hit leader at Yankee Stadium passing Lou Gehrig at 1,269.  Jeter went 0-4.  JT's pet peeve was all those tools with cellphone cameras and other crappy digital cameras.  All those flashes had to impact Jeters at-bats.  And all those resulting photos will suck.

Mariano did pass Lee Smith for second All-time in saves.

No, I guess my POINT was too SUBTLE for you. Not sure why UNION had to be in all CAPS.

Shoot--looks like the caps thing is contagious.

TGP's 2 cents on Hobart's win over last weekend's game vs. Dickinson:

TGP will take the win but this game pointed out several weaknesses/concerns:
1. Coming out flat in the second half at home, no less, with an opponent down 14
2. Hobart's defense was lit up for 229 yards rushing (405 total yards vs. only 331 yards gained by the Statesmen.  To be fair, last year Dickinson averaged about 192 yards rushing a game, so it's the staple of their offense)
3. Hobart's offense only gained 97 yards rushing (although Dickinson is a very solid defensive team - last season they allowed an average of 115 yards a game).  TGP is not a fan of the RB by committee still being employed by Hobart.  Hopefully Hobaica (who did gain 72 and rush for a TD) can crack some 100 games and become a feature back ala Blakowski, Brandon, etc
4. Dickinson was 4 for 4 on 4th down conversions

On a more positive note:
1. QB Rich Doyle and the Hobart WRs/TEs played great (20 for 30 for 234 yards and three total TDs).  Doyle was named co-offensive player of the week by the Liberty League for Saturday's effort.
2. Special teams made big plays - Robinson's blocked punt; Vincent averaging about 35 yards a punt, including a 58 yarder, in his first ever kicking assignment; FY PK Conor Callahan going 4-4 on PATs
3. Hobart won the turnover battle
4. Hobart secondary made key plays in the red zone to end Dickinson scoring threats (earning Woodard co-rookie of the week League honors for his efforts in his first NCAA action)

Carnegie Mellon (CMU) Preview:

This Saturday, Hobart will hit the road to Pittsburgh, PA to play the Tartans (1-1) of Carnegie Mellon University.  CMU easily won their season opener (35-7) against Ohio Wesleyan (0-1) , but the Tartans lost 19-10 to Grove City (1-1), a team Dickinson easily dispatched 34-7 a week before the Hobart game.

CMU turned the ball over four times and was kept in check by the Grove City defense in rain-soaked conditions.  CMU QB Phil Pantalone had a horrible outing only completing two of 11 attempts for 22 yards and three interceptions.  Probably the only bright side for CMU in this game was that RB Anthony Ruzga had a career best day leading the Tartans with 72 yards rushing.

Although TGP expects CMU to play much better on their home turf than they did at Grove City, TGP doesn't think we'll see a 27-26 barnburner like we did last year at the Boz.  It has been a few years since the Statesmen have gone on a road trip of this length (320+ miles) and hopefully Hobart won't have to overcome being flat  like they did in the Dickinson game.

The key to beating CMU will be containing their Wing-T offense and creating third and long situations.  CMU's Wing-T has been ranked among the nation's top 10 the past two seasons in rushing. In 2006, the Tartans ranked eighth with 260.6 yards rushing per contest and in 2007, the Cardinal and Gray averaged 277.0 yards per game, ranking 10th in the nation.

Based on last weekend's results, TGP expects Hobart to give up a lot of yards but clamp down inside the 25 yard line.  Another couple of interceptions from the Hobart DBs would be nice too!  Either way, TGP likes Hobart's chances of going 2-0 before they transition to their in-league schedule.

Prediction:

TGP likes Hobart to come away with a 28-14 victory this Saturday in Pittsburgh.
