I mentioned this on the Division III Rivalries board, and haven't gotten a single response.  Maybe LLers will chime in.

RPI has not just one, but TWO opposing teams against which it has played over 100 games, Union and WPI, as chronicled by the sports historians at augenblick.org.

I wonder how many other teams have 100+ game series v. more than one other team.

In my experience, the Shot Glass Trophy game was a bigger deal than the Transit Trophy game.  What did you other Red Swarmers think?

I suspect that there may be some SCIAC teams that can claim that, perhaps an Iowa team.

Not Hobart that's for sure.  The Statesmen have played 100 games vs. Rochester, but the next closest rivals are:

Union - 91 games since 1896
St Larries - 80 games since 1901
Alfred - 78 games since 1899

That reminds me - has anyone thrown out a taunt this season for the general lack of Larries on the LL board?

Preliminary research indicates that RPI might be the only D-III team outside of the NESCAC, and the only college team outside of both NESCAC and the Ivy League, to have two 100+ game opponents.  Those Uppities have all been playing each other for a looong time.  So have Lehigh and Lafayette, but with something like 142 meetings, they've played more than once per season a bunch of times.

correct lehigh/lafayette have met now 143 times pbr's family friend plays soccer for lehigh and even their soccer teams have played over 100+ times.
pbr's been to the game many times and still goes when possible. total blast and great game/atmosphere to go....

EDIT: the beavers put a lickin on the trojans last night...makes psu's schedule that much stronger well done by the beavers. for some reason pete carroll just seems so smug pbr loves it when 'sc gets beaten on national tv

JU just saw this commercial on TV.....

http://www.nationalcoinmint.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=10

Its a $1 Brett Favre collective coin, valued at $29.99, but being sold on TV for $9.99.  Theres a WTF if I ever saw one....

PBR I was thinking the same thing about a team like Penn St.  But then I thought again about USC pounding Ohio St.  Would that make the big 10 look like the WAC in the BCS computer at the end of the season?  What if USCs one loss beat out any undefeated teams in the big 10?

PBR...

pbr thinks there is going to be 3 undefeated teams this year and someone is going to get left out looking in...in all honesty this may be 1 of the best psu teams pbr has seen. their oline is  downright scary, and defense just rocks even w/ missing all american lb sean lee. but something tells pbr there is going to be 3 teams undefeated and once again the bcs will be a farce w/o any kind of playoff system

soccer would be much easier to play 100 times because they might play 2 or 3 times a season.
Anyone notice how none of the kids from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were even a little bit cool... Where was the athlete who pile drives wonka into the chocolate river??? Coulda done sooo much more with that "classic"

If there are three undefeated teams, and two of them come from the Big 12 and the SEC, then I think PSU is out.  The real debate would start if the SEC or Big 12 champ comes out with one loss and there is an undefeated in a major conference.  Then what happens?

its fun to speculate, but a looong way to go for a number of teams. psu has to play at osu and wisky. the sec beats up on one another it will be very tough for a team to come out undefeated down there. in fact pbr thinks 'bama takes down georgia this weekend....

I think it would depend on the "major" conference.  I would say there are only 6 major conferences, ACC, Big east, SEC, Big 10, Pac 10 and the Big 12.

I think theres a good chance for like 4-5 one loss teams.  Then it just gets ugly.

JQV

I suppose I should have said "BCS conference" instead of "major conference."

PBR, I am going to channel Corso on Bama "NOT SO FAST MY FRIEND."  Not only is UGA good, but they are great at home.  Plus, big wins over Clemson and Mississippi State frankly don't tell me anything about them.

Always solid stuff coming from the Turnerator.  We need to update WikiAnswers, the most directly-applicable source I've found thus far, that doesn't require leafing through crumbling pages.

By my count, for non-NESCAC (and non-Ivy), thus far we have

  • Albion - with not 2, but 3(!),
  • Kalamazoo, and
  • RPI.

I think it's impressive that Amherst/Wesleyan/Williams and Colby/Bates/Bowdoin each have 3way 100+ game series.

A bunch of NESCAC schools and the term "3way" - TGP thinks there's got to be a joke in there somewhere right?

labart96

Following the daily dose, TGP nominates WPI-RPI as the LL GOTW based on the numbers:

RPI vs WPI

#2 vs. #1 Scoring offense
#1 vs. #2 scoring defense
#2 vs. #3 pass offense
#2 vs. #5 pass defense
#2 vs. #1 kickoff returns
#3 vs. #6 punting
#1 vs. #3 turnover margin
#2 vs. #1 rushing offense
#4 vs. #1 rushing defense
#2 vs. #1 total offense
#3 vs. #2 total defense

My inner George Carlin has been screaming that same thought, but heck--I took a negative karma hit for posting about longstanding D-III rivalries.

Yes, it's in there somewhere, and when you lay it on us, I'll laugh along with you.

How about PETA??  Writing a letter to Ben & Jerry's requesting that their ice cream be made with human breast milk instead of cow due to the cruelty involved in milking a cow.

Just the thought of it makes me vomit in my mouth a bit....can you even imagine Rosie O'Donnell ice cream?

Man, I hate PETA...conceptually not a bad organization, but they go waaaaaaaaaaaay over the top.
