RPI leads Susquehanna 28-7 at halftime.

SaintsMarchin

21-14 Union up with 12 to go in the 3rd...SLU is killing themselves with turnovers, and the refs have made a couple questionable calls, especially the fumble by the QB

dlippiel

Union wins 35-14 and clearly dominates SLU after giving up 14 points to begin the game. There may have been a few questionable calls but giving up 35 unanswered points is not O.K. and after the first Q SLU got beat in every facet of the game. I was very impressed how SLU came out. I thought their QB made some nice passes and they threw the ball into the flat very well. To me, SLU does not look like a team without a loss. Yet they did turn the ball over way too much and took some poor penalties. Coney and Connelly looked very good today and the Dutch have clearly found a QB for the future. Hats off to Gourrier and Gallo. Great althletes that made some very good plays. Today looked good for U and they will have a much needed week to heal and rest. I am very very concerned about the RPI game. Unless U can work to handle Robertson they will have a very tough game.

Yeah SLU jumped out big on Hobart too running 20 or 25 more plays and controlling the ball with short pass plays for the first half.  They didn't have the depth or steam to keep it going for 60 minutes, but they are competitive and makes me really wonder about their loss to Norwich.  I would like to see Chris Phelps to do well because he briefly coached at Bart (as well as Kevin Farr playing at Bart).

Looks like RPI beat SU by a good margin.  That looked like a potential trap game for RPI since RPI has occasionally dropped random games in the past, so they look poised to be undefeated going into the DutchPumpkin stretch.

Random (well, maybe not-so-random) thought:

Kurt Stutt and Bob Conway did a really good job with the broadcast today. I should know, I sat next to them.

RPI 35, Susquehanna 14.  RPI dominated 1st half (unusual for the Engineers) that ended 28-7, no 3d quarter scoring (again unusual), RPI substituted freely in 4th quarter with 35-7 lead, probably accounts for the blocked punt by Susquehanna that was their final score.

I'd forgotten how stark the inexperience of college freshmen and sophomores can be.  When the freshman backup quarterback came in, his first official act was to fumble the snap from center.  Oh well.

RPI running back left the field early in the 4th qtr with a banged up knee.

By the radio reports, Susquehanna has a pretty decent bowling-ball-with-feet for a running back, he can be hard to tackle.  Susquehanna's kicker is better than RPI's kickers.

Other week 7 thoughts:

In the d3football.com Top 25, multiples of 7 lost:

  • 7 (UW-Eau Claire),
  • 14 (DelVal), and
  • 22 (Carleton),
thus proving a few things.  First, Carleton was ranked one spot too low.  Second, the Carleton loss makes the MIAC even more screwed up than it was before--and it was plenty screwed up before.  Third, the DelVal loss, combined with the Lycoming loss, mean that the MAC is nearly as messed up as the MIAC - which at this point looks to be even more screwed up than the Empire 8.

DC - If you were sitting next to Kurt 'n Bob, you must have been one of the loudmouths who was ALL OVER the refs, even for the calls they liked!  :D  Those guys came through on the streaming audio loud--very loud--and clear.

Since you're here, Jimmy Olsen, did you get the word on Costa's injury?

You're the only dood on the board that doesn't know & accept that '57 can't spell.

Poor grammar and horrible spelling... it's just how he rolls.

Kurt always does a good job. Bob hasn't been doing many games this year, but I thought he was taking too long on his side, which lead to Kurt having to interrupt to call the play.

Gro can only hope that in the press box in the new stadium they put a phone with a light on it instead of hearing it ring over and over during the broadcast.

I would not say that SLU got dominated in every facet of the game after the 1st quarter. Union got the momentum back on a SLU fumble inside the 10. Union scored on big plays but only managed 12 first downs to SLU's 21. SLU does not have the depth they have had in the past, but they showed they will contend with everyone in the LL

Reno was very impressed with the Dutch today and here is why:

SLU did a great job of taking away Union's top 2 playmakers on offense: Coney and McKelligan. It was great to see the other players show that you can't "cheat" by ganging up on those 2 guys because Union can beat you in other ways. Gallo is really fast. He has 8 catches this season, 3 for TD's and averages I believe over 25 yards per catch. Gourrier as we know is a playmaker (was Union's total yardage leader last season). But how about the 2nd TE Boland having a 71 yard TD Reception? Union has now proven that they are very balanced on offense and can look in many different directions when a play is needed. And the defense, which clearly struggled in the 1st quarter pitched a shutout the rest of the way.

Hopefully the Dutchmen use this momentum and 2 weeks of preparation time to shore up any deficiencies (and they certainly do have them otherwise they would not be 3-3!) and hopefully bring those shoes back on the bus from Troy!

Anyone see how the MAC imploded today with regard to the Pool C bid potential?  No team has less than two losses now (all in-region, except Del Val with one loss to I-AA Iona) -- four teams have two losses, but several have to play each other still.  Suddenly, Pool C consideration becomes really interesting in the East Region, assuming a minimum of one bid, likely maximum of two bids come to the East:

Curry (NEFC) - 7-0
Cortland (NJAC) - 6-0
RPI  (LL) - 5-0
Husson (Ind.) - 5-0 (2 OOD Losses)
Plymouth State (NEFC) - 6-1
WPI (LL) - 5-1
Montclair (NJAC) - 5-1
Rowan (NJAC) - 5-1
Ithaca (E8) - 4-1 (1 OOR Win)
Hobart (LL) - 4-1
Hartwick (E8) - 4-1
Del. Valley (MAC) - 4-1 (1 OOD Loss)
St. John Fisher (E8) - 4-1 (2 OOR Losses)
Alfred (E8) - 5-2
Albright (MAC) - 4-2
Leb. Valley (MAC) - 4-2
Kean (NJAC) - 4-2
Lycoming (MAC) - 3-2 (1 OOR Win)
Brockport (NJAC) - 3-2 (1 OOR Loss)

OOD = Out-of-Division and OOR = Out-of-Region

19 teams in the East Region have 2 or less regional losses, although five of these teams are virtually guaranteed Pool A bids.  Husson has a very weak SoS (.440 and about to fall further), although they are eligible for one of the three Pool B bids (and potentially a Pool C bid).  This is going to be interesting.

Frank I believe that Ithaca has 3 in regions wins because Frostburg St. is in the same administrative region as Ithaca (New York and Maryland).  Right?
