Most of the Mount posters on the board are indeed honest with their compliments for other squads.  As a 30 year follower of the Purple Raiders, it does get somewhat boring watching blowouts and games that we thought would be close turn into routs... not the fault of the fans....

We do appreciate the excellence that Larry Kehres and his staff have captured and continued, however, we do not get our rocks off watching 50 point blowouts every week.

When we see a team come in and put tremendous effort and passion on the field, we appreciate and recognize it...not to be "uppity", but because we see many squads come in and melt...

Ithaca physically beat the hell out of us...and Hobart did the same...St John Fisher was not intimidated and played their cojones off...game scores do not indicate the effort and desire shown on the field sometimes. good fans see love of the game.

when we were beaten in the Stagg bowl, true FOOTBALL fans saw that WWW deserved to win and myself, I found it refreshing to watch the pure joy of the Whitewater fans because sometimes we Mount fans forget how special winning the big  one really is....

So, when we (90% of us)  come on other boards to compliment we are not blowing smoke up your butt, we are sincere.. we respect your team and their game.

I haven't been posting either way since the game, but also don't see anything wrong with what is being said on the OAC board or over here from Mount Union supporters.  Is it really a bad thing to congratulate a team on doing well, and still looking for ways your own team could have done better?  There's not a program, coach, player, team, fan who doesn't want their team to have performed better in the last game.  Not being at the game, I can't say much about how well Hobart played, or how well Mount Union played...I can just go and look at the score and the stats and read the articles.  Do I wish Mount had done better?  Yes.  Am I satisfied with a win?  Absolutely!  Do I think Hobart played a good game?  From what I've heard from others, yes I do think that.  But, any team that wants to get better, alwayss needs to look at what they can improve...whether they won or lost their last game.

Final 2008 installment of TGP's weekly recaps:

#1 Mount Union 42 - #23 Hobart 7

The Hobart Statesmen (9-2) were able to keep it interesting for the first half, but ultimately couldn't generate enough offense to keep up with the #1 ranked Mount Union Purple Raiders (12-0).  The Raiders dominated time of possession 35:25-24:35, won the turnover battle and eventually broke the stout Hobart defense in the second half to out gain the Statesmen 503 to 196 total yards.  Leading the way for the Raiders was their All-American SR RB Nate Kmic who broke the NCAA DIII rushing record following a 235 yard rushing performance (on 37 carries and scoring four TDs).  Although the Statesmen passing game was rendered ineffective due to the speed of the MUC DBs, Hobart's 104 net yards rushing was the second highest performance against the #1 ranked Purple Raider rushing defense.  SO RB Andrew Marlier lead the Statesmen with a workman like 56 yards on 20 carries.  With the win, Mount Union advances to the NCAA Regional Final and will face off against NJAC Champion, Cortland State (10-1) for a trip to the Final Four.  Cortland advanced to the Elite Eight by defeating Plymouth State (10-2, NEFC Champion) and Curry College (10-2, an at-large team also from the NEFC).

Mount Union was the first team to score more than one TD on the Statesmen in the first quarter all season.  After falling behind 14-0 in the first, the Statesmen offense had an opportunity to get on the board with 14:12 to play in the second quarter, but a 56 yard drive stalled just outside the MUC 20 yard line.  FY PK Conor Callahan's 30 yard field goal attempt went wide right making it the first miss for Callahan since the Union game back on October 11.  The Statesmen defense successfully shut out the MUC offense for the rest of the quarter.  Unfortunately Hobart would generate only one successful scoring drive - a 14 yard TD completion from SR QB Rich Doyle (again earning the start in spite of a second degree shoulder separation and going seven for 21 passing for 68 yards and an interception) to JR WR P.J. Overdorf - following a 13 play, 71 yard drive with 5:03 to go in the third quarter.  It was MUC the rest of the day.

SR LB Justin Hager lead the Statesmen defense with 20 tackles.  Hager is the only Statesmen defender to ever record 20+ tackles in more than one game.  Hager's 134 tackles on the season broke a 13 year old record previously held by Jesse Truly '96 (129 total tackles in a season).

Although the outcome was not what the Statesmen faithful were hoping for, Mount Union's players, coaches and fans all had very positive things to say about this Hobart team and the effort put forth on Saturday.  A link to the game recap can be found below:

TGP hopes you all enjoyed reviewing these weekly updates as much as TGP enjoyed writing them.  TGP is hoping to attend the Union-Hobart game in Schenectady (aka SHOCK-town) next year and will resume these updates just prior to the 2009 season opener.

With a strong returning group of players (by my count 7 or 8 starters on offense and 6 or 7 on the defense), Hobart should once again be in position to compete for the LL title and a sixth consecutive NCAA berth!

Thanks and Happy Holidays!

I have to be honest -- I don't get where U89 is coming from really.  Hscoach has been in here and in the East Region Playoffs PP giving advice and analysis, as have others.  I think we can all admit that Hobart used a bit of gadgetry to stay in the game until Mount Union finally pulled away in the 3rd quarter (without the fake punts, Hobart's offense seemed to be struggling getting things really moving forward).  Nobody has been dissing Hobart's defense that I've seen or read.

I made my comments Saturday during the Cortland game about my experience last year in Alliance.  Paraphrasing myself, I said (when asked by Senor RT about what the atmosphere is like) that there is a 50/50 scenario there -- it seems like 50% are in golf-clap land (the expectation for victory is still there, so it sort of mutes the reaction from those fans) and 50% are wild and excitable.  My guess is that the 50/50 split after the loss to UWW last year is now more 60/40 or 70/30 (majority toward the excitable range).

Let's face it -- except in some high school football locations in this country, nobody here EXCEPT FOR Mount Union fans really have a true understanding of what it feels like to win and win and win.  Mini-dynasties in D-3 over time have never come close to what Mount Union has done -- so there is no textbook response for how you're supposed to react when you win games by an average of 40 points on a regular basis.  As I said last year, I just hope the excitable fans remember to treat the other team and their fans with respect and dignity -- and everyone on the boards has been extremely complimentary toward Hobart's team and fans.

I'll see you MUC fans in Salem if your team can win two more... Drinks on Guru (just kidding :) )!

JT calls a good portion of MUC home fans God's waiting room.  Ya gotta give 'em credit though cause those old birds can hang in cold weather.

There are two keys to beating Mount Union:

1) Playing with a lead

2) Turnovers

In their few losses of the past 20 years, this has been the theme.  Mount does not play well if the game is close late or if the opponent is ahead.  The adversity that most teams go through during the season, ups, downs, playing from behind... generally doesn't happen to Mount.

JT thinks that Cortland can play with Mount, ie., make a good game of it.  It depends upon what team shows up.  Cortland has crapped the bed in the past few years against Rowan (2006), RPI (2007), and Ithaca (2008) when it probably had the better team.

If they bring the team that played Rowan this year, it could be decent game.  Cortland will need turnovers to win.  JT's prediction MUC 38 Cortland 21.

No doubt.

This proves LL board has better visual amenities and more diversity than OAC board.  Which school claims these fans?  :P

Seriously PBR?  If the guy wants to act lilke the class clown every time he steps in the lime light, then he shouldnt be playing at that level.  Hockey has had a difficult time with ratings as it is, now I have to listen to this cat chip about his Ex using a term people used in 8th grade?  Come on Avery, hit him with something harder than that!...

This guy is priceless.  I think hes good for hockey actually.  We need more guys like him.  (I'm not saying that what he did was right or doesn't warrant some sort of action by the league)

Notice how JU has the Bruins logo up there now that they are a good team...

right on ju...hockey needs all the characters they can get...their ratings are bad enough. what he said doesnt warrant a suspension they should let the players police themselves for the most part and this would of been taken care of on the ice.
