LaCrosse sucks, they will go down at the WIAC.

How do people see them as #2 and close to Calvin?   Calvin will grind them up with their 3-7 runners.

My question is how does Calvin fund all those coaches?

La Crosse doesn't suck, and of course the spectre is in the back of the minds of the Calvin folk of La Crosse's win last year at nationals, when Calvin was favored, and leading with a mile left. It takes more than better average times, it takes heart, to win at nationals. The knight seniors feel as though they have some unfinished business.

It's unfortunate that La Crosse and Calvin haven't yet crossed paths. However, there have been common opponents. Calvin's top-5 average time was 32 seconds behind Wisconsin at the ND Invitational, though in different races.  La Crosse's top-5 average time was 59 seconds behind Wisconsin at Drews/Neubauer.

I don't know of a meeting between La Crosse and Oshkosh yet, either. However, Oshkosh was 55 seconds behind Wisconsin at the ND invitational, suggesting that they could be competitive with La Crosse, if not slightly faster.

Of course, there could have been runners not racing or not performing up to par at any of these meets, making comparisions inaccurate.

I do not have all of the details, but I can tell you what I think is the case:

Al Hoekstra and Brian Diemer are co-head coaches for men and women (I think).

Rick Otti (middle-distance track coach) and Nancy Meyer (former women's coach and  current women's AD) and Laura Scholma (former women's grad assistant) are all assistant  coaches for both teams.

Jeff Engbers, alum, is grad assistant for both teams.

Rob Hyde, who volunteered as an assistant for several years, is now the JV coach.

What I hear is that they are all helping each other really.

Very impressive.  It's great to see a program make a commitment to a traditionally minor sport.  Do you think Calvin's lack of football allows them to pull resources into other sports?

Could be, but how much are the coaches paid?  Fifty students (XC runners) at $27,000 a year could cover some expenses.

Congratulations to former McMurry track and Cross country star Gina Vandiver who won the Women's Division of the Double Iron Man (4.8 mile swim, 224 mile bike ride, 52.4 mile run) in a time of 31 hours and 13 minutes.

Are any top-D3 teams going head-to-head this weekend?  Where is Geneseo, Amherst, La Crosse, Calvin, New York, Cortland, Oshkosh or North Central?

Or many of them could be volunteers.

I expect that most of the assistant coaches at Calvin have "day jobs" and are volunteers, or receive only a token pay. There are two head coaches, but they coach two teams (men's and women's) and have other responsibilities, such as teaching.

Calvin's XC teams have the day off. The La Crosse men had a meet yesterday, the Luther College Dual, which they won 19-42. Oshkosh  had a non-scoring meet, and NYU has a meet today (East Stroudsberg Invitational) which doesn't sound all that promising for tough competition.

Next week Calvin is at the MIAA championship meet, where the biggest question will be whether both teams can get perfect scores. The big meet of the day will be the WIAC championship.

Other than the WIAC championship, is anything else interesting happening before regionals and nationals?

Next week LaCrosse loses at the WIAC to Oshkosh.

Bold prediction....care to share your thinking?

titan2000

I think Kaul wins and with the exception of Sigl and the WW guy, its a dual meet.  No disrepect to the one or two other interlopers, but I think the Oshkosh pack will match the LaX pack.  LaX does have a tremendous advantage being the host, with all the alumni there, though.

It should be a good race and a close one, but I think Oshkosh has nothing to lose in this race and so they will be loose.

Good luck to everyone and hopefully the course is in good shape and the weather is kind to the fans.

On the "LaCrosse sucks" part, that will always be true, no specific reference to the 2006 team.

here is a pretty good article about methodist college runner husein nasiro-sigo

a little background - mc is one of a handful of schools who are endowed by a foundation (the davis foundation, i think) to offer significant academic scholarships to students who attend uwc schools around the world - when husein arrived on campus, nobody had any idea that he was a cross-country athlete, so he's been a pretty pleasant surprise, to say the least
