It looks like the ODAC may have another member very soon. As I wrote in the USAC side....
The clock maybe ticking down for the Hornets being in the USAC. President Davis in today's SU school paper wrote in his column that at the next ODAC meeting of school presidents he will make a formal request to join the conference. Many here have thought this would happen. It has been no secret that SU has always wanted to get in the ODAC from day one of the football program. Chances are this will happen. Its just when is the only question.

Any idea why SU didn't get into the ODAC from the get go?

If SU has always wanted to be in the ODAC, then I would guess the ODAC didn't need or want them.

And geography wise, it makes sense for Guilford to be in the USAC, and CNU join the ODAC.  No talk of either of those happening, though.
You know, folks keep mentioning Guilford with the USASAC, but Guilford probably doesn't want to be in that conference for a lot of reasons unrelated to geography.   Besides, when all sports are considered, Guilford is a closer trip for many schools in the ODAC than VWC and E&H.

What is the weather supposed to be like in BH20/Harrisonburg tomorrow?

I am bringing the WMD down for most of the BC game and then the JMU game, and want to be sure the kiddies are dressed right...

Thanks!

They fit in D1-AA

I can't argue that....not sure I would want it.....but can't find an argument against it.

+1 for the SU guy....wow...did I just do that!

BINGO.  I'd think we'd see CNU playing the likes of William & Mary, Richmond, and JMU in a few years.  It just makes a little too much sense. 8)

And no stopping at DII, either!!  Although I'm ignorant of the process one would go from DIII to DI-AA, the DII schools are far and few between, and it's hard to get stoked over schools that are several states away.  CNU would have enough natural rivals in-state to keep things interesting.

Looks like we have 40% of rain tonight, and then sunny and 70s tomorrow for the game!

Showers on Friday, but expected to be partly cloudy with a high of 83 and overnight low of 54 on Saturday.  I'd expect mid 60's and low 70's during the 7-10 pm game.

Great discussion on the addition and dissolution or financial woes of football programs.
Just some random thoughts/comments:

In most places football is a big revenue sport, yet it is also a big expense sport. I would guess basketball would be cheaper and provide larger returns vs the expense.

I could understand DIII schools having difficulty making ends meet, but it a surprise to hear that there are DI programs in trouble with all the revenue they bring in. Kickerdad makes a great point with the $40+ seats and outrageous prices for concessions are just the beginning. Look at stuff like parking, fan items, etc.

I know at my alma mater- it costs....uh... the minimum annual donation requirement is $600 just to get the "privilege" to apply for season football tickets. Having the privilege doesn't guarantee seats (but it does get you one luggage tag and a news letter). Schools also will pay portions of the gate to get schools to play them- remember, just two weeks ago ASU got paid $400,000 to go beat the Wolverines. You also have the merchandising, TV, etc. I would be willing to bet if you go to the mall near the average DIII school- (i.e.: near BC) that you will probably find VA and VT and even JMU stuff- but not even a BC hat. Those revenues add up.

I am not sure how the DI programs spend the money, but it rolls in. Look at the shoe contracts. Are there shoe companies that have deals with the DIII schools? In DI there is big bucks there. I know a girl that participates in sport at large state school at the DI level and every week during the season she gets something- from bookbags to shoes, sweatshirts, to warm-ups, coats, etc. Additionally, when they go to tournaments, they get all sorts of "gifts".  She says the football team does not get all the garb due to the number of people, but they still get shoes, cleats, sweatshirts, etc. With that 3rd company entering the market there are major $$$ being spent...look at MD's coach last night. He looked like a NASCAR driver with all the logos on.  I doubt that the switch from those other guys came cheaply.

You guys that are recent players and current Dads- I am curious if there are those types of things at the DIII level?

A large cost factor though, probably is the travel budget. Most DI schools fly to many away games. They have buses to rent. Even conference games- example -VA if they play Miami, FSU, GT or BC- I know they fly. I am not sure about trips to the other schools. I am sure roughly 80 players plus trainers, mangers, coaches, staff, etc adds up.  I know the team this girl is with eats at good places and stays at places like Courtyards, Marriotts etc. If you look at the average ODAC team they might have 2, 3 at the most overnight trips- and more than likely they are all by bus. I am not sure where they eat- but I would guess the price is limited to under $10 per person and they are staying at a Comfort or Sleep Inn type of hotel.

Excellent points made about the additional tuition that is brought in at DIII schools by having a football team. Other students may also be swayed toward attending a certain school because of football- from cheerleaders to pep band members. A football team also could bring unmeasured benefits to schools through alumni giving and bringing in students to a campus even if they don't play. I can understand (sort of) when a DIII or DII school cuts a football program because of all the associated costs. I don't understand the cuts to programs like wrestling or (like what I think JMU just did) to men's track and field and swimming/diving, especially when they say it isn't due to Title IX.

Thanks 85, what would we do without you. HAHA,,,,I should have thought about that web site, but I sitting here at work and wishing it was time to leave and hit the road for football and honestly looking at a weather site wasn't close to being on my mind.

Hey, Averett supporters.  Any idea how many Cougar fans might make the Saturday night trip from Danville to Greensboro?  I think it's going to be an interesting, fun and spirited game.  :)

Thanks!  Jan and I will be ringside, so to speak.  I bought two season tickets in the new section through the Quaker Club and got my tickets and parking pass in the mail this week.  I'm not sure what to expect from AU without Parsons and Hughley, but Guilford's offense has a lot of experience.  The key, I think, will be whether Guilford's Defense can have better results - I went to the Methodist game last week and we were fortunate to win, 50-47.  Still looking forward to the RMC game on Oct. 27 - hope you'll be able to attend!   Congratulations to the Jackets for their 2-0 road start and good luck tomorrow against Frostburg in Ashland.  Peace
