More bowl games. Randolph-Macon played in the 1969 Knute Rockne Bowl and Hampden-Sydney played in the Rockne Bowl in 1970 and 1971.

I think this discussion was limited to "Division I" bowl games.

Well, since the original post mentioned the 2001 Stagg Bowl, and later posts brought up the Poultry Bowl and the Burley Bowl, I would have to respectfully disagree.
And thanks to Chemist for mentioning the Rockne Bowl; I was racking my brain trying to remember that one.

HSC posted 2009 schedule at www.hsc.edu/athletics/football/2009/schedule09.html.  They replaced Kings College with Sewannee and replaced Huntingdon with Salisbury.  Based on the most recent results it should be a wash on strength of schedule.  Huntingdon helped last year but Salisbury is very strong.  Sewanee has had better records than Kings and it is an in region game.  This will give HSC 10 in region games.

Hey, abnrgr.  I haven't been on the football side much lately - glad I checked in.  If State has anyone extra, I haven't heard about it.  Smelly just decided to quit football at South Carolina, so maybe we can get him.  :)  I'm not sure who'll be next year's QB - I would've said Billy Watkins, but he's up to 6'3"/225 and they moved him to TE about midway through the 2008 season.  He was the only guy who'd ever had any game snaps during the Vogelbach era - in fact, he threw three TDs at BC in 2007.  There will be two sophomores and a red-shirt junior next season plus whoever's recruited.  I'm not sure, but maybe the red-shirt Billy Dennis (5'11"/200) who played at DeMatha.

Some of our W&L (and ODAC) fans might like to know what's up with former Generals QB and baseball player Christian Batcheller.   I chatted with him on Jan. 3 in Claudville, VA (Patrick County) after we both attended a function for his family (I attended public school with his stepdad, his aunt and his uncle).  Christian had an injury-shortened stint in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization and I think he said he tried some arena FB.  He now works for Deloitte and Touche in northern VA.  Anyway, looks like he did really well at Idaho State:

• Christian Batcheller will graduate in May (2007) with an MBA degree, accounting emphasis. In his three years at ISU, he has earned a cumulative 3.93 grade point average. He is active in student organizations, serving as president of ISU's Eta Lambda chapter of the national business fraternity Beta Alpha Psi, and chairing ISU's 2006 Governmental Accounting Seminar. While a student, Batcheller worked for the ISU athletic department in corporate sales and marketing and as the analyst for ISU football radiocasts. Last summer, he interned as an audit staff accountant at Deloitte & Touche in McLean, Va. He was married to his wife, Ashley, in 2003.

I read in the Richmond paper that Corey Sedlar is returning to HSC for one more season.  This is one less hole on offense that the Tigers have to fill.  Here is the link:

Jacketlawyer,

I agree.  This rivalry is much more fun when it is competitive and the outcome has meaning like the last two years.

Agreed.  When it's like it is now, there's not another one out there that's better. 8)

It looks as though funding's now available for Guilford to install field turf this summer at Armfield Athletic Center in time for next fall's games.  The field is now used for football as well as men's and women's lacrosse, but will also be used for men's and women's soccer once the turf's installed.  This will free up the existing soccer field for just practice or other expansion needs on the college's north side.

Not exactly football related, but there was a fire in one of the houses on campus at Randolph-Macon, which was home to about 14 football players. Everyone is okay, as the campus was off for spring break. One football player was inside at the time, but got out safely.
