Jeremybozz,

Nice video.  Thanks for posting.  It really makes you realize how much has changed in 50+ years.

Former New York Jets Head Coach Walt Michaels helped W&L make the Gator Bowl as a Fullback but could not play in that game due to appendicitis.

Consisted of a lot more than those schools, though, in other sports and in other decades. Catholic, American, University of Baltimore ... others I can't remember offhand.

In the 1960's Bridgewater was a member of the Mason-Dixon Conference.  The Conference had both a Northern and Southern Division and was around for a lot of years.  Most football playing schools were in the Southern Division:  Bridgewater, Hampden-Sydney, Shepherd, Randolph-Macon, and Gallaudet, as I recall.Shepherd actually was a member of two different conferences in those days. Lynchburg and Roanoke also were in the Southern Division, but did not have football teams.  In the Northern Division, again going on memory, the football schools were Western Maryland, now McDaniel, Catholic and John Hopkins, plus a number of schools that did not play football, including Loyola, Mount Saint Mary's, UMBC and American University.  All-Conference teams were selected from the Conference as a whole, not separate Northern and Southern Division selections, and Southern Division and Northern Division schools played each other, but not every Northern Division school played every Southern Division school.  Emory & Henry, W&L and Guilford were not in the Mason-Dixon Conference, although Bridgewater played W & L on a yearly basis and Guilford from time to time.  There was no Division I, II or III at the time, I believe even small schools were permitted to grant athletic scholarships, and Mason-Dixon teams played a lot of schools that today are Division II teams,  particularly from West Virginia, Pennsylvania and North Carolina.  I think it was in 1969 that Randolph-Macon, as Mason-Dixon Champions, played Bridgeport, then a school of 9,000-10,000 students, in the televised Knute Rockne Bowl in Atlantic City and won 47-28.

Very scholarly!! ;D  Thanks for putting it up here!  And it is, of course, correct. 8)

During the days of the MD Conf., I know H-S and R-M gave monetary aid  to football players. I won't mention which team in lemon and black gave the most. Oopsie  ;D Coach S says he doesn't think Bridgewater gave any aid. Not sure about other schools in the conf.
H-S played Montclair St in the 1970 Knute Rockne Bowl losing 7 to 6 on a blown 2 point conversion call by the officials. I was only 7 years old.....but I clearly remember the blown call.  :D  The Tigers played in the 1971 Knute Rockne Bowl losing to Bridgeport 17 to 12.

Allsky7,
I've heard stories about the aid given by the other school that was prompted by a homecoming loss.   :)  I'd have to agree with Coach S regarding BC's support of the program, or lack thereof.  WMC was in the same boat of no support.

I have a friend who has a son that plays for HSC,this year i attended games against Gettysburg,E&H andBridgewater.  I have noticed HSC looks faster than last years team, i noticed it most on special teams . The kickoff team looks faster but the biggest inprovement that i can see has been on the kickoff and punt coverage teams, those kids are really fast . The players that stand out on those teams are 4,23,18,2 and 8 in each of the game i saw the special teams made big plays . I think that makes HSC the most complete team in the ODAC i have seen so far and it makes them better than last years team.     Any feed back

Amazingly, I have not seen the Tigers in person this year. I will be at the Salisbury and Macon games though.  I am really looking forward to it. I can't speak to your comment overall, but I do know that the Walton twins from Cumberland HS have been a big addition to the Tiger program.....especially on special teams. Based on the commentary I have heard from WFLO.....these two are all over the place. I suspect that the Tigers are indeed, faster.

cujo395

The twins are 23 and 4 on kickoffs they are next to each other, with 8 on the outside next to the sideline 18 or 2 are next to the twins on the inside next to the kicker and when its kicked  WOW....  they can run ,even the kicker can run  and make tackles. This past weeked my buddy said number 8 split two guys trying to block him on punt coverage from the line of scrimmage and 4 had a big kickoff return. Special teams my be the wild card to winning the ODAC and advancing past the 1st round of the playoffs!

Nice memory of the 2007 HSC-Bridgewater game written for ATN this week.

I hope you are well and nice to see you back on the board. I hope Coach S and the Mrs. are doing well. 32 years later, I still have fond memories of Coach. He has had a positive infuence on many people and I'm a better person for having played under him. They were great days and he was a big part of our college experience.

Hope to see you at HSC next week. After the game the Gridiron Club is hosting a cookout under a tent down near the b'ball gym. Please stop by and introduce yourself. I'll be the out-of-shape, gray-haired, x fullback cooking burgers & dogs for everyone. Please come by for a beverage, burger, and reaquaint yourself with half of my old teammates.

Thanks for the kind words. I will pass them on. I have had many former players (from H-S and MC) tell me the same thing over the years. Funny, as we get older, it's more about the life lessons and stories. Who won the game and what the score was matter less and less. Don't get me wrong....winning is a hell of a lot more fun than losing. However, if you are around the game long enough.....most of us have been on both sides of that. Coach S and the Mrs. will both be there as well. Bill Blair is being inducted into the HOF. They coached together at Fork Union. Not sure if they played together at H-S or not. I'm thinking Bill is a little older.
Will make it a point to stop by the tent after the game and say hello.

If anybody is going to the BC  W&L game tomorrow and going thru Bridgewater, I would love a ride.  Have had a case of the dizzies this week and am not sure driving an hour one way by myself is such a great idea.  But you know me, I really want to go!!! :) :) :)

Good luck to the Eagles today. CB Seth Little is probably out due to injury as is RB David Argaud.
RB Tele Tate will try to play with one broken hand but it could be up to the passing game of Hagan and Tyler Beiler today.
