D3boards could easily have a "school cheer thread" under General Football and get a lot of pretty awesome responses.

At my alma mater, one of my favorite cheers from my years was:
"Free beer in the end zone
go team, go!!"

2.7 seconds. An average football player may need more time to score; a great one finds a way. I've seen greatness happen.

After reading the Earlham cheer, it must have been quite a battle the last two seasons going up against Sewanee with their traditional cheer, originally reserved for Vanderbilt in the 1890's.

"Rip 'em up!
Tear 'em up!
Leave 'em in the lurch.
Down with the heathen.
Up with the Church.
Yea, Sewanee's Right!"
I think that the comment about Vanderbilt and heathen is interesting because of the early history of Vanderbilt and the Methodist Episcopal Church, South. Thru the first forty years of Vandy's existence, until the split in 1914,  the ME Church,South had strong control.  It wasn't until 1914 that the split finally occurred and Vandy moved to a separate path. Emory and Southern Methodist University get the major support of the ME Church,  South, and take off from there.

Wikipedia has a well documented section on this part of Vandy's history.

I attended Guilford during a then (and now!) infamous 32-game losing streak.  The Quakers won twice my Freshman year (versus Gardner-Webb and Elon) and then did not win again until Homecoming versus Randolph-Macon (sorry, jacketlawyer!) my Senior year.  Painful!   I do, however, remember the deadpanned defensive cheer:

"Harass them, harass them, make them relinquish the ball."  lol

It was so bad for a while, we thought our best play was letting the other team's kick-off go in the endzone - that was good for 20 yards every time!  :)

Congrats to E&H's Devan Sproles and W&L's Jake Pelton on pre-season first team all-america honors from d3football.com. Also congrats to H-SC's Zach Morgan for his second team honor. Is it time for kickoff yet?

I echo your congratulations - saw their names earlier today.  In my mind, kickoff cannot come soon enough - 52 days for most DIII teams!

My son had half the hsc team over for a swim recently and they can't wait to get started. I'm kind of looking forward to it as well. Should be an interesting season. There is lots I'm looking forward to BUT my main point of interest is seeing if an ODAC team can/will advance past the first round in the playoffs.

Enjoy the rest of the Summer. Lets hope August passes quickly !!!!

Tigerfanalso,

It is good to hear the excitement among the Tigers.  I too am looking for that first ODAC playoff win in awhile. Let's hope it is a Tiger win.

I don't see any big surprises there. Mildly surprised Guilford didn't get a bit more respect. Personally I think they will be better than Catholic, but I guess there are some historical headwinds keeping up the skepticism. I also think Shenandoah could finish above Catholic. The Catholic vs. W&L game I watched last year really soured me on Catholic. I think they quit before the end of the first quarter.

I think Guilford's still in "show me" mode, but I do think GCQ might be better than CUA and, hopefully, SU.  Just a hunch, but I think the "Quakes" could do as well as 4-6, 3-4.  Granted, not a huge step, but I'll take a +2 improvement again this season. :)

Typical ODAC coaches voting.  Will be a very competitive season.  I wouldnt put a whole lot of stock in the Catholic U vs W&L game last year.  The QB's dad passed just before the game and he played anyway.  It was a rough trip for the whole team.  I think it will come down to the big three.  Sydney, Macon and W&L.
