His brother's stats might have been better

yes he did. Volgelbach was from NC State. The same NC state that let the QB (wilson) from Seattle transfer. I would  say State needs some QB recruitment fixes..........

I just looked at ODAC sites and school sites . Volgelbach , both Riccas , Sedlar were all short of 4,000 yards of Total Offense (Rushing & Passing ) in a single season. They all had small or even negative rushing stats .  Is HSC QB Nance the only player to do this in ODAC history ? Anyone else know this answer ?

It is likely Nance is the only one. To get those kinds of stats requires an enormous number of things to happen. First you have to have an extremely talented QB, which Nance certainly is. Second, you have to play in a system that favors the QB to both throw in huge numbers, but also to throw deep and often, which Coach Favret certainly allows. Third you have to have the receivers to make it happen, an area where HSC seems to have depth every year. Fourth, the QB has to be able to run, and has to be durable enough to last a whole season. As W&L tends to find out, that's a tough combination on QBs. Nance was lucky to only have a few minor nicks and he was certainly tough enough to play through them.

Finally, having two extra games helps. Most other QBs got a 10 game season, Nance this year got 20% more. So in terms of a 4000 yard season, that's an extra 800 yards. Not going to check the playoff game stats, but he probably got close to that in those two games. Considering he got 4010 yards or so total in 12 games, just clearing an amazing bar, it's pretty clear a standard season isn't going to reach that kind of level.

So, a lot of skill, a lot of system, a lot of help, a dash of toughness, and a bit of luck (yes, drawing Maryville at home in Rd 1 was lucky!) and 4000 yards is possible. Miss any of those qualities and you aren't going to get there. Nance, and the Tigers, will be a handful again next year, but I wouldn't put money on Nance getting to 4000 again. I'd put an over/under at 3600 yards...

I totally agree with you on all counts ! The Stars had to align for the 4,000 yard number but its still an amazing feat.  I've heard he's still recovering from a  turf toe injury that happened in first half of RMC game. I thought HSC was lucky to beat Maryville with Nance's injury not being able to run him. I'm sure it hurt HSC at Linfield too. Has anyone heard of any new coach hires in the ODAC ?

Actually, I think it was Skip Holtz (Lou's son) at ECU that redshirted him a year because he didn't fit his offensive plan.

Not pulling against anyone, but I think a NC vs. MHB Stagg Bowl would have been good for D3 Football.

I would have agreed. Was hoping for that even though I thought it would come out the other way. Close games though. I think this was a good shot for some new names to come through. UWW and UMU don't look as dominant as they have in the past. Wesley, NCC, UMHB, Linfield, even Bethel before they lost their qb... 4 of those teams gave good games to the Purple Powers but couldn't get over the hump.

Maybe next year.

Facts do get in the way sometimes, don't they? lol Make sure you get a good mirror so you can see well when you perform your surgery - real men operate alone, right?

Jk

Seems like the gap between the usual national powers has closed a little; even more convinced of that having watched HSC travel to Linfield and play a competitive game against one of the top programs in the country. By no means did HSC get run out of the park, in fact it was a three point game late into the 4th quarter.

Obviously UMU, UWW, UMHB, Linfield, etc, have all been tested this year by teams other than themselves, much different than in recent past.  Maybe, just maybe, the Stagg Bowl will look different going forward. I have a difficult time driving to Roanoke to watch UMU and UWW play each other again. My favorite Stagg Bowl was when St. Johns pulled the huge upset followed by Bridgewater's almost upset. Nothing against the teams playing on the 20th, because I do respect just how good they are, but it is the same old same old. I'm a huge Bama fan, always have been, but I think it is good for D1 football for them not to win the national championship again this year. Same feelings apply to the Stagg Bowl. Others need to step it up just a little more, Wesley, Bethel, NCC to give it a different look. Those schools are close, maybe others I'm not aware of.

Gregg Easterbrook is not my favorite columnist, but he does eat up time. He picked up on the UWW-UMHB game and ended his column this way:

"Obscure College Buck-Buck-Brawkkkkkk: In the Division III playoffs, Mary Hardin-Baylor trailed Wisconsin Whitewater 16-12 and faced fourth-and-goal on the Whitewater 3-yard line with 3:32 remaining. That cannot be the field goal unit trotting in! You don't need to know anything else about the game."

Somehow I don't think he'll be getting any ASC Christmas Cards.

I already got dinged on this topic when I expressed my opinion on the ASC boards. I just laugh about it. I use karma primarily to look at who to avoid getting into a conversation with...
