Newsflash. Marcus was not the BC running back picked for first or second team all ODAC last year. It was his backup. Just keep that in mind.

I think it would be more fair to compare Ricca to any Texas Tech quarterback. The Peyton Manning comparisons are exagerated. If ricca is the Peryton of ODAC then Washington is the Tomlinson and Spence is the Jim Brown. Ricca is a good quarterback, but passing the ball 45 times a game against week teams does help. I would like to know, though it is probably impossible, how many completions Ricca has had when he has thrown the ball 15 yards pass the line of scrimmage.

Honestly, comparing Ricca and Lewis (or any other BC QB) is - and sorry about the cliche - comparing apples and oranges.  Ricca is a pocket passer while the last four BC QBs (Lutz, Jenkins, Wakefield, and Lewis) have been a tuck-and-run type player.  I really do believe that Ricca wouldn't work well at BC because of the option game we play ... but who knows, maybe Colbert & Soltis would call more Sydney-like plays if we had a Ricca type QB.  And I'm not going to say the following just because it's the way BC does it (go ahead, roll your eyes), but I'd much rather have a QB who can beat you with his feet more than his arm.  We (BC fans) saw what Brad Baer (McDaniel QB) did to us this season.  And BC doesn't even have to rely on the arm of their QB seeing we have the stud O-line and stud backs we have had (and do have).  As much as I get nervous whenever we play H-SC, I still know what I'm going to get from Ricca when he hikes the ball and drops back (or rather, what he's not going to do).  With Lewis, if it's a designed pass play but he sees a whole up the middle or off to the sides, he'll tuck-and-run even if knows he's going to get hit.  His 37.2 rushing yards a game (5.8 yards per rush) proves that.  And those averages include the six sacks for -40 yards.  So yeah, I agree that I'd rather have a Lutz-Jenkins-Wakefield-Lewis over a Ricca ... but that's just personal opinion, and I'm not saying either is better (again, seeing that it's an apples/oranges comparison).

It had to be bumped down because of the Gameday Central :) ... but yeah, how exciting!  10 Division III games next season!

I'll be there with the Mrs and future BC daughter.  Not sure what time we'll get there, but I'd like to be there around 10 am Sat.  What do you need me to bring?  Side dishes?

Cowbells are for sissies.  If you can't out scream them, stay home!  My big mouth will be there for sure.

In college rules, can there be any circumstance where a personal foul against the defense is not an automatic first down?

I forget all the details, but during the BC/Shenandoah game, Shenandoah's defense was called for a personal foul, but the refs did not change the down to first down, instead making it second and long even after the 15 yards were marked off.

Someone behind me (who was obviously sick of hearing me yell "personal foul is a first down" a dozen times) said the radio announcer said that if the personal foul occurs after the ball is dead, it is not an automatic first down.  That sounds wrong to me.

Does anybody know?

Ok, one little chip in.  I'm still about a page and a half behind in the reading, but I need to throw one thought out right now.

Yes, Ricca throws the screen pass.  If that's why HSC is so good offensively, why doesn't every team do it, and do it that well?

Hmmm, want an easy answer?

No other QB in the league that I've seen can throw a perfect spiral downfield the way Ricca can.  Period.  When you've got an arm and a talent like Ricca, DB's have to respect it and give the WRs more room.  Thus, HSC takes the screen pass when its available, which is quite often.

yes, there is. it happened to us at bridgewater recently other than that game. i remember it happening, and where on the field (perhaps at mcdaniel one year when i wasn't on the field)... and i remember seeing it on tv once, but i can't remember the circumstances. an old coach (just a phrase  :-X) that i know explained it to me after he looked it up, but i can't remember the details...

This QB talk is pretty amusing. I would look at it from two perspectives...fade in...your playing days are over...you're an old man sitting on the couch talking to your grandson...which situation would you rather be in?

Situation A)

You're bouncing little Johnny on your knee, teaching him all about the wonderful sport that is football.  Johnny says "grandpa, did you play?"  With a twinkle in your eye, you look down at your young legacy and say "Why, yes I did...I played with JD Ricca"  You go to the scrap book and pull out a yellowed sheet of paper gingerly unfolding so as not to tear it..."See all his terrific stats?"

Situation B)  The same scenario, but this time you go to a box and say..."I sure did, I played with Jason Lutz, Robbie Jenkins, Brandon Wakefield and Jacob Lewis...here are the championship rings we won".

I think little Johnny would be more impressed by the championships, and it would sure be more gratifying to me to be able to look at a ring and say "I won that" than to look at a piece of paper with someone else's stats and say "he was sure good".

I, for one would rather have a quarterback that WINS than one who puts up huge numbers.  Brady vs Manning?  Give me  Brady any day...he's got the rings.  Huge numbers by a QB benefit him and the WR's, while the entire team gets to wear a championship ring.

Like it or not, a QB is judged by his wins.  You can't say he's not talented just because he doesn't win...look at Roger Clemens this year (I know...different sport).  If you ignore winning, Ricca is certainly better than a lot of other QB's...although I'd still put him at least behind Jason Lutz.  Ricca puts up stats (screen passes are a very effective weapon) but I would still rather be the guy wearing the ring than the one pointing at the stats of the QB and the WR's, while I have nothing to show for it.

Congrats, kid....she's sharp....kinda reminds me of Kirsten Duntz (sp?)!  Am I the only husband whose wife won't let him go near Hooters, the restaurant that is? :P

Well, Lauren didn't know I was going there either ... I told her after the fact.  A good week after the fact.  ;)

But she was cool about it.  She knows I think she could easily be a "hooters waitress" ... but heck if I'd ever let her be one!

Somebody has a signature that says "it is easier to ask forgiveness than to ask for permission" or something like that.

Sounds like you've learned that in your early years.

bridgewater die hards can say or believe what they want, but i will guarantee that lewis will not receive one vote for the 1st team all odac.  The coaches in the conference (who watch hours of film on these kids, and are fully aware of their talent) will end this argument with an 8-0 vote.  In fact, Lewis doesnt have a chance to be 2nd team.  In 03 JD was 1st team, in 04 he was 2nd (after playing only 5 games)  that shows how much respect the rest of the coaches in the league had for the BW qb last year.  These are the coaches!  Obviously BW is the premier team in the conf. and has been for years, but since Lutz left that has been a position that has hurt them in my opinion.  I think a majority of the coaches in the conf. would agree...
