The Daily News-Record article today talks about Winston's injury and sort of recaps the Hargrave-BC scrimmage.  I took offensive stats (and the key defensive ones) and put together an unofficial box score.  Both the article and the box score are posted at the top of my web site: http://www.bridgewaterfootball.com

Warring didn't play because of his hamstring.  He was cleared to play, but wants to be 100% for the McDaniel game.

My thoughts about the scrimmage:

- Against a future Division I-A offensive line (which averaged 6-4, 310) ... our DL and LBs did a fantastic job getting to the quarterback.  I had us down for six sacks on the day.

-Hargrave's Vidal Hazelton IS the real deal ... wow ... a couple of the balls he caught were unbelievable ... he finished the game with five receptions for 79 yards and three touchdowns.  For only being 17 yrs old, he has a bright future!

-I agree with miz regarding the o-line ... I was very pleased they held Hargrave's huge defensive line (which averaged 6-3, 280) to only six sacks.  I feel we have 7 or 8 legit starters.  It'll be nice to have that kind of rotation during the season!

-In my opinion, Lewis won the starting job with his performance.  I know he has been with the 1s all summer, but his poise in the pocket impressed me.  He finished the day going 6-for-9 for 60 yards and two touchdowns.  He was only sacked once in the four or five possessions he quarterbacked.  Jeff Highfill REALLY impressed me with his arm ... he was only 2-for-7 for 32 yards and one interception, but two of his deep balls were perfect ... the wide receivers either ran into one another or stopped running (I honestly couldn't tell what happened ... but it was evident the ball was put where it was suppose to).

-In Winston Young's absence, senior Marcus Washington, sophomore Phillip Carter, and freshman Rocket Gadsden did a bang up job in the backfield.  They totaled 155 yards on the ground on 19 carries (8.2 average).  I'm convinced Gadsden is the prize recruit this year ... he's only listed as 6-0, 180 pounds ... but he's got to be 6-2, 190+.  His 73-yard touchdown run (up the middle!) was quite impressive.  With him, Washington, Carter, and Young (when he returns) ... we definitely have All-ODAC caliber backs for the next four years.

-Considering the talent we were facing, I thought our secondary did a heck of a job on their receivers ... their quarterbacks certainly didn't light us up ... they combined to go 11-for-21 for 147 yards (three TDs and one INT).  And even though Hazelton caught over half of those yards, our DBs defended another three or so that were thrown to him.

-I was a bit surprised I didn't see Antwaine Campo do "more" ... meaning, I only remember TWO times I noticed him on the field ... once was the one tackle I had him for in the first half, and the other was being blocked by a Hargrave offensive guard while a Tiger running back pranced by.  It could have been that he didn't see the field much or plays just weren't run his way, so I'm not too worried.  Fellow linebacker Leland Elliott, however, recorded five first half tackles (three unassisted).  Drew McQueen had the best first half for the Eagles, also totaling five tackles (three unassisted), a pass deflection, and a blocked PAT which he ran back for two points.  Adrian Herndon added a first quarter interception.

All in all, I think "losing" 30-26 is a "win" for us, considering last year we fell 35-6 to the Tigers.  And this Hargrave team was by far the best I've seen come to Jopson.

Kid- good commentary as usual.  I guess on the positive side with the db's they were able to run stride for stride and have great position on that Vidal guy.  They just need to learn to make a play on the ball.  Too bad to hear about Winston's injury, but the other tailbacks are probably the three best in the ODAC (with Winston we have the top 4) ;)

Kid,
I wasn't at the game yesterday.  It seems there is a lot of talk about our pass defense, but I was wondering how we did against the run?  I heard the o-line looked strong.  Is there any indication of how we look on special teams yet this year or did they not work on special teams during the Hargrave scrimage?

Outsider14

they usually don't, and never do special teams live in scrimmages

They actually did special teams "live" for the first half, and I believe some into the 3rd quarter (then stopped after that).  Marcus Washington had a 23-yd return then an 18-yd return on kickoffs ... not shabby vs. the competition we faced!

Regarding the run, as noted in the stats, they rushed for 224 yards on 47 carries (4.8 a rush).  All their backs had to have 40s under 4.6 ... they were pretty darn fast.  Two of their top three rushers look like their heading to LSU and Alabama.  So put the rush stats into perspective.

Waspergate, Unoffical score E&H 49 AVerett 14. No real standouts, secondary did well, as expected Coach Monte wants better execution and total team effort. We'll know this time next week what the season will look like for the Wasps:kickoff 7:00pm@Marietta College in Ohio.Anyone have info on Marietta. Peace---I am the E&H Dad

Marietta has been an improving team over the last couple of seasons under a new coaching staff.  If that continues it would be a quality win for E&H, especially there.  I wasn't there last year but I believe they have the new field turf, which was needed bad, it had been the worst field in the OAC.

If you're making the trip its the first exit when you get into Ohio, but be careful if you miss the road to turn into the stadium you could end up back in WV.  You sit kinda far away from the field and there isn't much of a visitors side, you may want to sit on the home side.  The ppl of Marietta are always very nice.

One interesting side note for you E&H ppl, Monty was offered the Marietta job a few years ago and turned it down.  He left them with some good ideas though, such as having the head coaches office in the middle of campus, to be close to the kids, and some upgrade thoughts on the facilities.  I think's thats probably why the turf went in.  They are committed to winning.

If you can't tell Monty is a friend and I wish him the best at E&H.  Good luck this year!

I thought E&H looked good, they didn't run the ball much.  But with T Woods the pass looked good.  It looked as if the wasps could have scored a lot more than they did.  They had a couple picks given up, put had a couple as well.
Defense was much improved.  Averett was 6-4 last year and was returning 10 of 11 starters on D.  So putting seven TD's on the board in what looked like about 2 1/2 quarters is good.
Marietta is no Averett though.  So next week will be a big time test.
No injuries of note.
Go Wasps.

Thanks EHCFan. Looks like BC has the injury bug of the ODAC this year so far. Good luck against Marietta, we all need to take care of out-of-conference business so we can get 2 ODAC'ers in the playoffs this season! Here is to an injury free, fun ODAC season.

Go Eagles!

I am starting to prepare my menu for the in house tailgate next week ( Cannot make it to Marrietta game) and I am wanting to mix it up this year. I have already  planned to have the traditional Tailgate food beer, brats, beer, steak, beer, dip, beer. But I was wondering if any body out their had any good tailgate recipes they would like to share. Like Roasted Cardinal with a marmalade sauce, Generals Tso, Chicken, Deep fried Yellow Jackets with honey dip, Filet of Tiger immersed in Broth of Eagle. I make wonderful Wasp Wings, that Sting like hell, but are oh so good.

Tailgate,
Not aware of any good recipes such as you have requested.

But I was told the best way to eliminate a wasp!

Watch them chase an Eagle around all day and after they have given up 40 pts they finally fly back to the tailgate to refuel! ;)
